I just finished running through everything but the preparedness/hazard section at bottom and the Climate and Vegetation section that Ruslik0 added. I've got to get back to my real work now (spent all of the time I should have been doing that yesterday on this), but I hope it helped! Feel free to contact me if there's anything else that is needed. Awickert (talk) 18:31, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks so much! You're now the top contributor so despite what you say you're going in the nomination line. Again, thanks for all your help! ceranthor 18:39, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
OK - sure. And you're welcome. Just give me fair warning of when it's brought to FAC. With 3 of us, we should be able to fix all issues rapidly. Awickert (talk) 19:11, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Alright. I'm thinking in two weeks, as I'm busy next weekend. Ruslik recommended we wait, and I think that we should, just in case one of us finds something else. ceranthor 19:13, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
OK - sounds good. I'm up for that as well; I just got back to civilization on Friday morning, and I have a lot of work to catch up on... Awickert (talk) 19:23, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

I see you nominated - I'm nervous; I've never submitted a FAC before! By the way, I can read Spanish fairly well, if a need for that comes up. Awickert (talk) 00:11, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry, we'll be fine! That will be helpful, since Sandy doesn't like Google Translate very much. As for nerves, you helped quite a bit with Nevado del Ruiz, I see no reason to be nervous. :) ceranthor 00:22, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Cheers for adding it to the urgents list! Hopefully, it'll get a couple more reviews. Though I understand why people would skip it; I often have to avoid reviewing the long ones myself. :-) And I should give belated thanks for your support, too; much appreciated. I didn't realise you'd been watching its development; it always makes me self-concious to consider how many people have articles I'm editing on their watchlists. :-) All the best, Steve T • C 22:58, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Haha, I was watching it long ago, when you and Erik first started on it. I think it was like 15 kb around then. Can't remember exactly, though... good luck with the remainder of the FAC! ceranthor 23:24, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. 1922 Vallenar earthquake

Hi Ceranthor, I 5x expanded the 1922 Vallenar earthquake yesterday, as part of an effort to have at least start class articles on every earthquake in the List of earthquakes#Largest earthquakes by magnitude. The 5x was incidental, I wasn't thinking about DYK and now that I look at the article I'm stumped for a hook. So, as the originator of the article, I though you should have the chance to nominate it if you can find something of interest there. Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 16:04, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

DYK nomination of 1922 Vallenar earthquake

Hello! Your submission of 1922 Vallenar earthquake at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Thelmadatter (talk) 15:28, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

I already answered there (and added the requested cite). Cheers, Mikenorton (talk) 22:07, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry your article got caught in the crossfire, but a couple of things came to a head simultaneously and my patience had worn a bit thin. It's obviously not your fault that the alt text guidelines are completely half-assed, but so long as alt text remains one of the FA criteria then it's got to be done right. Else it's just like saying the "professional prose" requirement is satisfied by chucking a few words down on a page.

Yours isn't the only article I've opposed because of its alt text, so don't take it personally. It's been much improved now though, and when the one remaining issue with the map in the lead is dealt with I'll be striking my opposition. See? I'm not a monster after all. ;-) --Malleus Fatuorum 20:55, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

No problem, Awickert did a fantastic job with the new alt text, much better than I could have. As for your opposition, I didn't think anything of it other than "I have to try and fix that!". In actuality, I'd like to thank you for pointing out the errors. The FAC process for me isn't about "getting an FA", it's about improving an article to a high quality, and with that quality of alt text, there's not even a chance the article could have been considered "excellent". So thank you very much! ceranthor 21:57, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
Just to let you know that the article was promoted, over an oppose from User:Stifle who objected to the non-free image and the soundfile. Fortunately he was rebutted. In my view both of these are important elements in the article, and it would have been a great pity to lose either. I'd like to thank you for your support at FAC and for the suggestion which I implemented. Brianboulton (talk) 19:18, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

dormant or extinct?

Hi Ceranthor, longtime no speak. We have a discussion at Talk:Rano Kau as to whether a certain Volcano is dormant or extinct. Would you mind chipping in from your knowledge of vulcanology? Cheers ϢereSpielChequers 07:52, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

A couple things

Hi Ceranthor,

2 things:

  1. Could you provide a ref for, "Past eruptions of Quizapu Crater ejected enormous amounts of ash that traveled as far as Brazil. After the 1932 eruption, the local vegetation was devastated, and the area remained barren until the 1990s. However, human life remained unimpacted?" I would try to dig something up but it's after 2 AM here and my eyes are falling out...
  2. I started a pathetic stub of an article called Volcanic hazards. I imagine that it lies in your area of interest. If you keep writing volcano articles, it could hopefully be expanded into a nice overview that would be usable as a "see also" at the top of the hazards section, leaving the particular article for information exclusive to the article's topic.

Hope you had a good St. Patty's day! Awickert (talk) 08:28, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Plate Tectonics

While procrastinating other things, I noticed that you have a goal to bring plate tectonics back to FA status. Summertime project? I'm adding it to my to-do list in any case. Awickert (talk) 23:26, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to work on it, yes, in addition to earthquake. Both need tons of work! But first let's get through the FAC. ceranthor 00:07, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. Text lost, maybe possible edit conflict?

I was just passing through (I got there from Malleus's talk page) and I read the David A. Johnston article and corrected a typo and noticed that some text seemed to have dropped out in this edit. I hope it wasn't due to any edit conflicts! Just dropping you a note to let you know. Carcharoth (talk) 13:33, 3 April 2010 (UTC) PS. You probably haven't got to the "see also" section yet, but I thought List of volcanoes in the United States of America was a bit out of place.

Thanks! I did mean to take that out; I'll be re-adding it somewhere else once I find a source for it. The see also section is a bit primitive at this point; feel free to add things you think are relevant to it. Thanks for the help so far! ceranthor 13:38, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
I was trying to find out if there have been more recent films or docudrama or dramatised documentaries on the event (including Johnstone) as I remember seeing one on TV. Possibly it was a re-run of the 1981 film, but I think there are others out there. By the way, I found home video footage on YouTube here. Any idea how far away that video was taken? Carcharoth (talk) 14:08, 3 April 2010 (UTC) PS. Found it! Surviving Disaster, the "Eruption at Mount St Helens" episode from that series from 2006. Page on IMDb here. More here (National Library of Australia) and here (BBC Active, the BBC distributor of the documentary).
Wow, thanks. Looks to me like I could definitely expand the legacy section some more. :) ceranthor 16:35, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
No problems. I've only got co-ords to add for the JRO (I'd like to have the exact co-ords for his observation post, but that might not be possible). Then I'll switch to something else and let you see what you think so far. Carcharoth (talk) 16:45, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
If you do mention me, just say I copyedited and added and suggested a few things, as I don't consider it a major contribution (or not enough of one). If you have time to look at the talk page, there are a few points I raised there as well. Carcharoth (talk) 16:01, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

(outdent) Another suggestion on the talk page here. I'm considering buying that book, but it might be cheaper for someone in the USA to get hold of a copy. Would you have time to look at the other stuff on the talk page? It would be nice to have a map showing the locations of the people caught in the eruption, if locations are known. I think it should at least be possible to have a map of the location of Johnston, Martin, Blackburn, and Truman. Carcharoth (talk) 04:38, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Repeating here: I just put the book on hold at my local library. I'm fairly proficient at GIS and vector-based image editing, so I should be able to put together a decent map if those data are out there. Awickert (talk) 05:32, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Review of Cerro Azul (Chile volcano)

I will be glad to peer review it, though it may take me a day or two. Thanks for asking, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:00, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Actually, it's at FAC... I was wondering if you could look over the prose. ceranthor 03:17, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, sorry I misunderstood what you wanted. I will look at the article and comment at FAC. Do you want me to be BOLD and, make copyedits if needed or just make suggestions? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:56, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Whichever suits you best. ceranthor 22:38, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Congratulatiosn and you are very welcome - glad to have helped improve the article a little bit, but kudos to you and Ruslik0 and Awickert for getting it to FA! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:12, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you Malleus. I'm honored. Also, thank you Pedro for the nomination. As soon as NW is free to write a nom, I'll be sure to accept. If I do pass, I hope I can be "one of the good ones". ceranthor 21:25, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Hey Ceran! I've got some time now.

I just got the book (Echoes of Fury) from the library; it looks like a useful resource, and you're welcome to ask if there's anything you want me to look up. I'm going to go over the text of the article; looks like a lot of citation cleanup and additional citations are needed, but those will come in time. If you could expand the ones with just a name and a page, that would be fantastic, because I can't read your mind and figure out what those are to do myself. (Well, I bet I could eventually figure them out, but it would be much quicker for you to do them.)

The inside cover of the book also has a map that helps give an overview of the situation; I'll do something in GIS (or maybe just with a USGS topo or orthophoto) to make a map that shows where key players were during the eruption. I've got Arc at work, but I'm installing GRASS at home in case I want to do something fancy here over the weekend.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I am now 100% on board, Awickert (talk) 23:39, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Great to hear! I'll be occupied for most of tomorrow, but I'll try to find some time in the morning to compose a list. ceranthor 01:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'm out of town starting mid-next-week, so I'll try to do as much as I can now. Awickert (talk) 01:11, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Fact tags: I added the St. Helens Hero source, and I specifically tagged those things because they weren't in there. What source are you finding them in? Awickert (talk) 02:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Here. ceranthor 11:29, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. I should have clicked around on the links. But we'll need to actually reference that page, so I'll do it today when I go through the article; sounds like you're a little busy. I'm also about to reply to you on my talk. Awickert (talk) 14:40, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Is it possible to centralise discussion on the article talk page? I'm about to leave a note there about the images I found, uploaded cropped and added to the article. Carcharoth (talk) 17:34, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Of course it is. I see some wonderful new images in the article; I just finished working on the project (roughly 8 hours of work) and now have to go out, so I'll try to read over any new info and fix any images later. ceranthor 23:15, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for putting the article up for FAC. I've been following the discussion and a few questions occur to me:

  • (1) Is it acceptable to notify the WikiProjects tagged on the talk page in the hope that more people review the article? Or is it better to wait for the FAC regulars and anyone else to get to the article as they work through them?
  • (2) When you have an article waiting to be reviewed, is it expected to do a review of another article to help ease the load at FAC? I vaguely remember this being a courteous thing to do, and would be more than willing to do so, especially as some of the current articles at FAC look quite interesting (I wouldn't have time to look at more than one or two, unfortunately).
  • (3) Has anyone looked closely at the sources used in the article yet? I'm not sure about a few of them, and that is one of the things that should be discussed, IMO.
  • (4) This was all a bit sudden (I'm used to working on articles on a scale of months, not weeks), and one thing that slipped my mind was that two of the nominators are taking part in the WikiCup (you and me). Should that have been mentioned in the nomination? I had initially been ambivalent about being on the nomination, but then you persuaded me that I should be. Me working on this article was unexpected and unplanned, which is why the WikiCup didn't actually occur to me until now. Obviously it has to get through FAC first (which is the priority), but if it did so, I'm not sure whether and how it would be submitted for consideration and also: (a) whether it should have been mentioned in the nomination; and (b) how the points are allocated.

I'm going to be out for the rest of today, though I'm not sure if you will see this before I get back. If the WikiCup stuff should be mentioned in the nomination (from looking here, I think it should be), then please feel free to do so. I would do so myself, but wanted to ask you first, and I also want to be clear in my mind what work I've done on this article. Carcharoth (talk) 08:03, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Ceranthor. I can see you have another page to watch at the moment... :-) But if you have time, could you look at the above post I made? I think you might have missed it as it was in an existing section and someone else posted after me. Carcharoth (talk) 11:13, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't see it! Answers:

1.) Yes, of course it is! The Volcanoes WikiProject is not incredibly active, however. WP:BIO could be helpful.

2.) Yes, it's recommended. I regularly review articles at FAC - so you do not need to worry - but you are welcome to review an article there if you choose.

3.) No, I guess not. I have to admit I was a bit questioning of some sources, but once one of the source reviewers (Ealdgyth, Rafablu) gets around to reviewing we'll go from there.

4.) I will mention that if you have not already. As far as I know, we would both receive 100 points for the article being promoted to FA.

Hope that helps, ceranthor 11:21, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Ceran - congrats on the mop. Juliancolton left some comments on the Johnston FAC; I've taken care of the first three, but in the likely event that you have a chance before I do, I wanted to let you know that there's more to do (in case you didn't notice). Mmm... that was a ramble. Right! Congrats and Johnston FAC notice. Awickert (talk) 08:54, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Took care of it, Awickert (talk) 22:03, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry! For some reason your first message did not come up as a new message; I have no idea as to why. I asked julian to stop by and look over it, so I'm glad he found time to. Thanks for your help as always, ceranthor 22:05, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Dude! No worries. It's the way these things work. Probably got lost in the sea of fan-mail because I put it up in an old section :-). Awickert (talk) 22:09, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Seeing as more work is needed on the article, and seeing that you withdrew from the Cup, would you mind if I struck through the bit about the WikiCup on the FAC? I'm not going to be submitting this one as part of the Cup (it is too late for this round anyway), and you clearly won't be submitting this, so I see little point in having that caveat there any more. I'll try to get to the FAC itself tomorrow to address some of the concerns raised. Carcharoth (talk) 02:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Re: Malleus Fatuorum

Thank you for your concern. I had no intention to make any further comments on Malleus Fatuorum's talk page, unless I was being directly addressed. By the way, I'm not sure how you can say that Malleus recognises my good intentions when he clearly has a very low opinion of me indeed. – PeeJay 23:54, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

No one should not have enemies. That makes life boring. That said, I don't know if Malleus truly has a low opinion of you and your work. I know that even though I dislike my enemies, I still hold their accomplishments in regard. Anyway, I think you're a pleasant guy who was just trying to help and got caught in the crossfire (of something larger). Best wishes for the future, ceranthor 01:22, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Are you ready yet?--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:07, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

The article 1962 Bou'in-Zahra earthquake you nominated as a good article has failed , see Talk:1962 Bou'in-Zahra earthquake for reasons why the nomination failed. Review of another lemur article

If you have time, would you mind doing a quick review of Lemur evolutionary history, which is up for FAC? Even just a decent copy-edit would be appreciated. Since you like geology, there's even a few red links in there that might be calling your name.  ;-) But if you don't have the time or interest, don't sweat it. I've always valued your feedback, and I wanted to hear what you had to say about this article. Good luck with your RfA! – VisionHolder « talk » 01:21, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Hey Ceranthor, just a quick note to say that your request for adminship was incredibly successful and I'm pleased to say that you've now got a few extra buttons to make this Wikipedia a bit better than it was before you got the bit. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. User talk page deletion

Hi Ceranthor, belated congrats on the adminship! :) Speaking of which, can you explain your rationale on this? The user had just been blocked for 24 hrs and had an active block notice on their page.[1] They've made two more TP edits since, even making our poor adminbots lumber about. They were edit-warring two days in a row on the Canada article and there's no indication thay wish to vanish. I don't see any special reason to hide their wiki-history right now, they cab do just fine with the page blanked (once the block has expired the notice can be blanked). What do you think about restoring those versions? Franamax (talk) 01:17, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Um, no problem. I guess I should have looked into the editing history a bit more. I apologize for the trouble. ceranthor 01:21, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
So do you think I should restore the entire history? ceranthor 01:22, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I think you should. It's fair for other people to be able to see the history, there's nothing personal that I know of. It should all stay. Franamax (talk) 01:30, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Alright, no problem. My bad! I can't deny that I'm still getting used to this, forgive me. ;) ceranthor 01:31, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Should be done. ceranthor 01:33, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Looks good. Thanks! Rrius (talk · contribs) was a little taken aback since they couldn't check their own edit history to respond to my warning from yesterday, which is why you really should check the history of pages and editors when you're looking at CSD requests. Oh well, let's move on. Franamax (talk) 02:33, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

TFA requests

Do you understand how this works? I had thought I had not had anything featured on TFA before, but it seems that if something you contributed to significantly ends up on the main page, that still counts, even if you didn't take part in the FAC process. I'm not aware of anything specific, but that might apply to me. The rest of it, I can't make head or tail of just yet. Will you be submitting a request, and when should it be done? Carcharoth (talk) 12:47, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Um, I will be extremely busy today, so you are welcome to list the article. I think you should list it since you would be getting the 1 point for not having an FA on the main page. I would like for it to be done today or tomorrow because there is another article contending for the spot (a rock group of some sort). Ask me any questions you have; I'll be on for 20 minutes or so. ceranthor 13:01, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
I get between 4 and 6 points, depending on whether a scientist article has been on the main page in the last 3 or 6 months. ceranthor 13:03, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Really? I can only get three! The "two week" bit can't be evaluated yet, but the one-month previously bit looks OK. I haven't managed to look at the 3 and 6 month bits yet. What is similar for this article and what is similar for the other article for the same day? Anything geological or anything musical? Does it have to be specifically a biography or anything science, and a band, or anything musical? Carcharoth (talk) 13:07, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, if you've been a significant contributor to an article that has appeared at TFA, you don't get that extra point-- it's for editors who have never had any article at TFA. If you're unsure of the points, just post to WT:TFAR and Wehwalt will help. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:09, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. Now back to Plato! :( ceranthor 13:10, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll post to WT:TFAR. I'll skip Plato though. :-) Carcharoth (talk) 13:53, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Heh, taking a break to check. Looks like the TFA/R thing is going well, at least for now. I hope that Joy Division can be featured the day after or something like that... maybe the day before? ceranthor 22:39, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for doing this, you two. I looked over this last night, and didn't want to kick Bird out of its spot. I'm not sure why there can be only 5 requests over >>5 days, or why these articles aren't removed from the list and slotted for FA when their support becomes obvious (well, maybe they are; just haven't seen it happen), but they's da rules. But if we wait for Bird, then we should be good. Awickert (talk) 01:02, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
It seems like everyone is waiting for the bird to go on the other foot. If either of you have time, could you (per this) work out what WP:PUNC means and what bits need changing? I fear it involves checking all the quotes to see which end a sentence, but I'd personally move the punctuation outside quotemarks for all quotes, as that is a lot easier. Though if either of you understand that guideline better, please do what is needed. Carcharoth (talk) 02:29, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
It's on my mental to-do list, though this week is awful for me. I will deal with it sometime before Friday at the latest. Fortunately, WP and I agree on quote usage, so it shouldn't be too bad. Awickert (talk) 02:33, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

This weekend is bad for me, and I'm not yet sure about this week - Carcharoth, if you want, feel free to nominate! :) ceranthor 02:42, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm almost ready to shove this request into the queue, but we need a blurb written for the TFA template, and deciding which picture to use - I presume the lead one, though I like the one of him using the spectrograph as well. Maybe crop this for use on the main page TFA template, or is that getting ahead of ourselves here? Carcharoth (talk) 01:55, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Update: all done now. WP:TFA/R - hopefully it will still be there when you read this! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 02:39, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

re: G11 tag

I tagged it with the speedy tag since, even if there are few good sources in it, the press release tone, heavy external linking, and overall fluff content of the article make it clear that it qualifies as something that exists solely to promote the subject. I did not simply delete it directly myself because I feel that administrators deleting articles offhand without some kind of second opinion is something to avoid. Though CSD is for candidates that meet some very stringent criteria, the normal nomination and deletion process always has at least two sets of eyes on the article's deletion. To preserve that process, I prefer to let another admin decide articles I wish to nominate for speedy deletion or PROD. Steven Walling 16:03, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Alright, that sounds reasonable. ceranthor 19:11, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Quick note about your userpage image

The nice image of the foggy GGB looks quite nice, however, it's under CC-attribution, so you'll need to provide either the author's name, etc (like at User:Jack Merridew and User:Mono). or link to the image directly. This isn't a pressing issue, but it's a common CC license misinterpretation--it's not PD, so attribution is still required. A quick note is all that's needed; anyway.--mono 00:11, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Ceran,

You mentioned getting in touch with the USGS if David A. Johnston is selected as TFA for the 18th. I volunteered to do so, but will be gone this weekend (back the night of the 16th). If you or Carcharoth (who I am notifying about this message) want to get in touch with them, great. Otherwise, please leave a message at my talk (or send me an email) saying that I should talk to them. Either is good for me. As far as I can tell, the upside of me emailing is that my real name is obvious here, and the upside of one of you doing it is that you may be able to alert them sooner. Awickert (talk) 21:34, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Given that I'm a minor, I don't feel comfortable emailing them and revealing my identity. I'll check with Carc. ceranthor 02:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I don't think we can contact them until (if) it is put in the queue for the main page. Any contact before then would have to be saying it is featured and may be featured on the main page. If anyone does contact them, pointing them at the articles on the volcano and the eruption would be a good idea as well, as they may be able to suggest improvements to those articles. I would offer to contact them, but I wouldn't know where to start and who to write to. Probably best to wait for the queue to be updated and for Awickert to get back. Carcharoth (talk) 06:15, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Seems fine with me. You should definitely collaborate on something again with us, Carcharoth. Without you or Andy I'd be left with a subpar article with unpolished prose and a dearth of photos. ;) ceranthor 17:52, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, it has been queued now! We should leave Awickert to contact the USGS if he knows how to and what to say (he gets back tonight). What I wanted to cover now was trying to minimise any vandalism. There will be the usual people helping out with vandalism reversion, but I thought it would be nice if us three could help out with that as well. Trouble is, I'm rubbish at the warnings and blocking stuff, so I'll just stick to reversions and watching the page when I'm around (for a couple of hours after midnight, and for about the last four hours of the UTC day). Hopefully you two can help out at other times. Obviously, if the vandalism gets bad (as with any TFA) some form of protection might be needed, but the tendency is to try and avoid that. I'm sensitive here to the fact that friends and relatives of those who died are still alive, so it wouldn't do for them to see the page in a vandalised state (that could be mentioned if the vandalism gets bad). Admins or bots will protect the article from being moved, and will protect the TFA picture being used, but it is worth double-checking the day before that this has happened. Hey, you both probably know all this already? :-) I might also give the article a once-over again tonight or tomorrow - some of the reference dating is a bit idiosyncratic. Carcharoth (talk) 11:08, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Awesome! I'll do my best to help with the vandalism. As for USGS, the reason I wanted to email USGS was the anniversary. I'm just afraid that we've waited too long and they won't get to the email in time to notify his relatives and such. ceranthor 11:43, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Just arrived home; I'll send out that email. I'll also watch the article, of course (though personally, I don't see why they all aren't just semi'ed for the day). I'm trying to do all of the things that I told other people I would do here, which with work and being gone, will likely take over my summer. But thanks very much to both of you for the work on the article, and when I get the chance, I would love to do so again. Awickert (talk) 06:13, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
PS: sorry to be so late... I was pretty sure that it would be queued while I was gone. But much of the USGS doesn't work on Sundays, so hopefully we will have alerted them ASAP anyway (I sent the email). Awickert (talk) 06:29, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Just heard back from Vic Hines, the USGS Western Region communications chief. He says that he will widely distribute a notice of the article being featured; hopefully someone hears about it via that and appreciates it. Thanks again to you both, Awickert (talk) 19:39, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

((od)) I am so pleased and at the same time ecstatic! I'm so glad we got to them in time. :) ceranthor 19:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Me too. Thanks, Awickert, for taking the time to write to them. Carcharoth (talk) 23:12, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Hopefully we won't get too much recognition, if any. ;) ceranthor 23:14, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
I've added a nice little dedication piece to Mr. Johnston. It doesn't do him justice, but I wrote it from my heart. ceranthor 23:26, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Nice. I'm using this link to keep an eye on it (rather than reload the history page constantly), so feel free to add in other pages there (e.g. the volcano and eruption pages, which I will add now) if you think they will attract more attention today as well. Barnstar

The Original Barnstar
For your great work on helping to get the David A. Johnston article to FA status, you deserve, at a minimum, this barnstar. The article was excellent and it is contributions like this that make wikipedia a useful, insightful, and topical source. Please keep up the great work! Remember (talk) 16:20, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much. The work of Carcharoth and Awickert was invaluable and the article would not be nearly as good without their talented input. I basically started the collaboration and got it to a GA standard, and they improved it to FA. As for the last part, I am honored! :) ceranthor 19:05, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Awickert and Ceranthor, David Johnston was one of those TFAs that makes one proud of Wiki-- which doesn't happen often enough!! I was ashamed and embarrassed once when we ran an article about a deceased person on her birthday, in which we made unnecessary, gratuitous comments about her mother-- imagine the mother having to see that on her lost daughter's birthday! Your work restores my faith in the possibilities to highlight good work on the main page. Congratulations! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:10, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm a bit flabbergasted that you are "proud" of my work, even if I just played a part in the article. (I still personally believe Carcharoth and Awickert did much more work than me :). ceranthor 19:47, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Addendum: The flabbergasted bit is not meant as unprofessionally as it sounds and also it basically just means that I'm surprised and honored that Sandy thinks the article is really good, which I guess it is. We worked really hard and I'm glad it came out so well. ceranthor 19:54, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
