Condolences

[edit]

I am a friend of this user IRL. Unfortunately, he died suddenly July 9, 2023. His many, many thousands of edits here will remain testament to his passionate regard for Wikipedia. lvklock (talk · contribs) 08:18, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I enjoyed reading his article on Great Hill Place. Others may, as well. Seasider53 (talk) 22:15, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I remember him very well. He did so much for the National Historic Register project. Unfortunately he rubbed some people the wrong way, especially when he created a lot of stubs. Many of the stubs were deleted. I was always on good terms with him and tried to flesh out a few things. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 22:35, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm so sorry for his family and friends. He was a giant in his arena on Wikipedia. Doncram was a relentless contributor and always attempting to standardize and source in NHRP pages. Such an enormous body of stable and important work on historical sites he created himself from lists he also helped create. Few have had such dedication to improving pages on historic American locations as he. His edits will endure. BusterD (talk) 22:44, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • We have lost another one of the greats. He was so kind and creative and his work on the US National Historic Register entries and US Nat'l Historic Landmarks was stellar. I am very sad to hear this news. My condolences go out to his loved ones. He did a lot of good work here. Netherzone (talk) 03:14, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In his memory, a NHRP-listed angel. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:41, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I didn't always see eye-to-eye with Doncram, especially with his method of creating articles. But, I appreciated his dedication to the National Register of Historic Places WikiProject and his eye for detail. He helped me improve the NRHP infobox generator, as well. His memory will live on in his legacy of Wikipedia edits. My condolences to his family. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 18:26, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • A real loss. I never had to double check his edits. Carptrash (talk) 19:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is terrible news. Like Elkman, I found Doncram difficult to deal with a decade ago, but after that blew up into an ArbCom case, he came back and continued to edit prolifically in the area of dispute for many years without major trouble. Most people either wind up getting blocked or quitting when something like that happens, and I think it speaks really well of him that he pulled it off. He put everything he had into improving our NRHP coverage, and his unstinting energy and enthusiasm have helped maintain a vibrant editorial community in that part of the encyclopedia. I was going to answer his last question, and then I found this...it's really sad. My condolences to his friends and family. I'm really going to miss him and his work. Choess (talk) 20:19, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know what to say... Don was always full of good ideas, always complimenting others products, very hard working. He is going to be missed, and we've lost a great contributor. Thank you Don. 25or6to4 (talk) 01:48, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh wow, what a loss. We ran into one another on a lot of museums and historic sites and while we didn't always see eye to eye, I learned a lot from him. My condolences to lvklock and others who knew him. Star Mississippi 13:28, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Like many others, I worked closely with Don in the NRHP space 15 years ago. He sometimes rubbed people the wrong way, but no one doubted his desire to improve Wikipedia. I met him and lvklock in NYC for dinner once. It was nice to put a face to the user, but also to see beyond the sometimes abrasive tone and see someone who cared deeply. Condolences to his family, friends, and fellow editors who worked with him. dm (talk) 11:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I haven't worked with him in a while, largely because I'm not as an active a creator of NRHP articles as I was a decade or so ago, but I will miss him and no one can deny that he put a lot of energy into making WP:NRHP one of our more active projects when it might not have been all by itself. Yes, he could be stubborn when he had his mind up, but I never personally had a problem with him over that. I had the chance to briefly meet him at a WM-NYC event, and in that time I, like Dmadeo, came away with my good impression of him reinforced. My condolences to lvklock (who was also with him) as well. Daniel Case (talk) 03:10, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Saddened to hear this, he was such a prolific contributor when it came to historic sites. Despite our handful of disagreements, I was always pleased to see his edits that formed such a wide base of subjects and thoughtful analysis. Reywas92Talk 19:17, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was looking at the obituary of Eagleash and saw that Doncram had also died this month. Two long-time Wikipedians. I wasn't always on the same side of in discussions as Doncram but he worked passionately and devotedly on subjects that he valued and cared about. He really was one of a kind. He will be missed. • Your edits will endure, and You will be missed. R.I.P! — Hamid Hassani (talk) 07:48, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was also sorry to read of Doncram’s death. Unconventional, certainly, and sometimes challenging to deal with, but his body of work in the NRHP space was phenomenal. He was also generous with his advice and, even if I didn’t always follow it, his thoughts were exceptionally useful in developing the coverage of historic places in Wales. RIP. • Doncram was the first editor to give me a barnstar (a the cleanup one!), and that early encouragement no doubt contributed to my continuing work; so, expressing my thanks for their encouragement of others. Klbrain (talk) 11:16, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was recently working on a new Wikipedia article, that linked to a Doncram sandbox page and I came by to chat about it. I am saddened to read of your passing. May you rest in peace, and thank you for all you did here. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 02:35, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Surprised it took me this long to see this. Doncram was very helpful when I started editing NRHP articles. Their support of a new-ish editor is still appreciated! - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:03, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Haven't been too active in the past couple years, but stumbled upon Doncram's talk page today to find this. My interests scratched at the surface of his knowledge, it's a shame we've lost this editor who was a great asset to Wikipedia. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 02:23, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • We never interacted much but I always saw Doncram either improving the project or helping editors, RIP Doncram, My sincere condolences to friends and family, –Davey2010Talk 00:15, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am so sorry I didn't see this earlier. I enjoyed very much working with Don on numerous articles on historic sites and architects. My favorite experience with Don was a trip we made together with my two young boys (now grown men) to the Pico Canyon Oilfield -- can't believe that was 16 year ago! I've attached a photo we took on that trip -- I recall being disappointed that this was all that was left to mark the spot of the first historic drill site. Don was a pleasure to work with, had such strong intellectual curiosity, and was truly dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of our historic sites. If an afterlife exists, I'm sure Don is busy there working on ways to preserve its history. Rest in peace, my friend. Your contributions here will not be forgotten. • I was going through my earlier AfD nominations and came across my first and only interaction with Doncram. I am shocked to see that a treasure passed away many months ago. Rest in peace. Aintabli (talk) 02:31, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Very saddening, no age at all. I only just now learned of this, seeing Doncram's name on a Talk page. I collaborated with him on a few articles, particularly on List of named corners of the Snaefell Mountain Course. Worse still, learning of Eagleash (from Liz's post above), with whom I worked on the motorcycle articles and whom I knew had been unwell, some time ago.--82.13.47.210 (talk) 00:20, 16 February 2024 (UTC) (User:Rocknrollmancer no longer logging in).[reply]

User subpages to complete

[edit]

Doncram has left over 170 userspace subpages, many of them drafts for articles on historic buildings. I would suggest that we come up with some plan for reviewing them and finishing those that can be finished. BD2412 T 01:09, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It would be a privilege, BD2412, in honour and in memory. SN54129 14:59, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in. His work frequently intersected with mine in the museum world, which is how I "knew" him. Flagging too for @CT55555 and @Netherzone, my art partners in crime if any are of interest. Star Mississippi 13:27, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course I'm in! I will start with his suggestions for a two new articles that he recently left on my user talk page regarding the group/colony of artists and architects who were part of the Camino del Monte Sol Historic District in Santa Fe. These include Alice Clark Myers and Leonora Frances Curtin Paloheimo (a.k.a. Leonora Paloheimo). Doncram left behind an awesome legacy of articles and I am happy to help out with his other drafts. He will be sorely missed, and may he rest in peace. We lost another one of the greats. Netherzone (talk) 15:14, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I started to go through the bot's list (thank you again S0091! and made a list of those not to worry about to save others the time. Some notes below, all me at this time for now but feel free to adjust my sig if needed. Also if any non admin is curious or wants a draft, just ask. Doncram drafts coming due for deletion

[edit]

Hello, friends,

The most recent SDZeroBot/G13 soon report shows about 100 Doncram drafts that are coming due for deletion on November 12th UTC (it's still at Nov. 11th in my time zone). You can find them by looking at the 06:00 UTC hour. He made a minor edit to delay their deletion back on May 12th. They all have some connection to National Register of Historic Places. I'll ping User:DanTD, User:Star Mississippi, User:Netherzone, User:BD2412 from the discussion above this one in case anyone is interested in either taking over these drafts or taking the time to postpone deletion on any of these drafts they think are promising. There might be other ones spread throughout the day but, again, the huge influx is at 06:20 UTC and onward. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 01:26, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

THanks so much @Liz. My on wiki time is spotty so adding @CT55555 to your pings as they worked with me and @Netherzone on Possibly's. Will see what I can handle. Star Mississippi 01:34, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would hate to see things like Draft:Buildings in the Charleston Historic District lost! Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 01:46, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I put a notice up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places, where there is likely interest in saving them. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 01:50, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Same @Bubba73. There's some extensive research that went in there. Star Mississippi 02:33, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, deleting this would be terrible. While we're at it, I wouldn't mind seeing the gallery at Sag Harbor Village District reformatted in a list similar to Draft:Buildings in the Charleston Historic District or similar articles. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 04:31, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz and @Star Mississippi, thanks for the heads-up. I will have a look at the drafts. There are some interesting ones and I have marked a few with the "Promising Draft" template. Will have a deeper look in the days ahead, as it seems there is a lot of good content in these drafts. Netherzone (talk) 02:16, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes! That's a lot. I just checked the Draft:United States Forest Service Recreation Residence Program with a Google search, and found there actually are such links, but most are linked to individual forests of USFS. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 04:27, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just a reminder, that these drafts just need a minor edit to delay deletion for another 6 months. So, you don't have to take responsibility for updating 100 draft articles in the next 5 days, just delay their CSD G13 speedy deletion. Liz Read! Talk! 00:57, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: I'm glad to take that up. BD2412 T 19:51, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:Liz will deletion notices be posted here? I would like to know if any of his drafts are deleted. Better yet I'd like to see them before they are deleted if possible. I've looked through the list but I don't know which I've missed. Thanks. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FloridaArmy if we missed any from the report @Liz referenced, I'm happy to restore. @BD2412 made a search, wonder if there's a way to see overlap with @SDZeroBot's so we can catch them first like we mostly did with Possibly. I'd imagine Fastily's bot will leave notices here for some and Liz and others who patrol CSD will so hopefully we can grab them. Star Mississippi 03:13, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So, just posting a reminder that about 100 of Don's drafts will be coming up for deletion around 06:20 UTC (see this list). Firefly Bot normally posts notifications but it only does so once and it looks like so many of these drafts are coming due because Don went and did a minor edit on each to delay their CSD G13 deletion. This is not uncommon but it means that Firefly Bot didn't send a second notice. As far as deletion notices, Explicit and I do the majority of the CSD G13 draft/sandbox deletions, I post a deletion notice on the User talk page, Explicit doesn't. Years ago we tried to talk about this difference but I've found it's almost impossible to convince a longtime editor/admin to change their editing habits. And it is very common among admins to not leave talk page notifications when they delete a page through speedy deletion, unfortunately. I've been meaning to write a post about this on WP:AN but there it is.
If you want to create a list, just take the SDZeroBot list for 11/12, sort it by the time/date column, copy all of the drafts during the 06-07 UTC hour and delete all of the content but the page titles. It's a pain but that's what I got for you. The only good point is that this list will live on in the page history of the SDZeroBot G13 soon page so if you can't get to it today, you can always check at a future date and see which drafts were deleted. But it's much easier to postpone drafts now than go to WP:REFUND and ask for dozens of drafts to be restored. The admins there will do it for you, but you might hear a groan over the internet. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 17:49, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reminder, Liz. I went thru the whole list and marked a selection of the drafts (mostly those on historical buildings and homes on the NRHP registry since there should be documentation/sources available), with either a "promising draft" template or by adding a dummy edit. Looks like some drafts have already been improved and/or moved to main space. Netherzone (talk) 20:12, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it looks like no pages were deleted! A lot of editors helped out but especially Netherzone and Explicit delayed deletion of these drafts. And I think at least a dozen were moved into main space or were draft versions of main space articles so they were Redirected. So, I think that is quite a success! Most of these drafts still need some finishing up but at least there won't be 100 that have to be addressed over 20 minutes, they are now spread out over several weeks in May. Thanks for the response especially for those editors who brushed up the content. Liz Read! Talk! 06:45, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Liz for flagging and @Explicit, @Netherzone and @BD2412 for the rescue. Amazing team work. Star Mississippi 13:52, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, I recently started working on two drafts in one, but I still want more information on them. I also hope that if there's any reason one of us can't work on some of these drafts that other editors take over the job. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 05:37, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, as of this writing, quite a significant number of these have been lost. I don't know how many are missing, or which ones I would've been interested in restoring in order to work on, but if anybody wants to work on the ones that were eliminated they should start submitting requests for restorations of those drafts. As for me, one of his drafts that I've been focusing on is a certain New England diner. I need more info on that one. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 16:46, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No need to go through Refund @DanTD.
I'm happy to restore G13s and I'm sure the same is true for other admins watching here. Do you have a list of those that have been deleted? I caught the one below since I saw Josh's notice. Star Mississippi 17:35, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can recheck the link posted by the OP. I see a lot of redlinks there. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 17:47, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know which you'd like restored and I'm happy to do so. I also wonder whether @SDZero's bot has the ability to just generate a list for us? @BD2412 I know you've helped FloridaArmy and I before. Any insight? Thanks either way. Star Mississippi 19:47, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
let's try that again, with a ping to @SD0001. Star Mississippi 19:57, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Star Mississippi Can you briefly state the requirement? What list is to be generated? – SD0001 (talk) 20:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @SD0001
As I understand it, your bot generates a list of drafts about to expire. What I wondered is whether it's possible to have a list of just Doncram's drafts that have or are about to expire so we can tackle as a to do. If this isn't possible (I really am not versed in the tech aspects), don't worry. It was more of a question than a request. Thank you either way. Star Mississippi 20:35, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, replied in #List of drafts below. – SD0001 (talk) 04:45, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

and @BD2412 me too until I saw the G13 notice. Look forward to tackling it. Star Mississippi 14:27, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still glad to help out. I had tinkered with some of these drafts, and then kind of lost track of this project. BD2412 T 01:18, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Doncram would be pleased at all of you helping to finish his work. Thank you. Lvklock (talk) 01:25, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Doncram. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Perdue Hill Masonic Lodge".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:57, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hey man im josh no issue at all with the G13, just letting you know I restored as I think it has promise. cc @PigeonChickenFish @Netherzone and others who have helped with these drafts. Star Mississippi 15:06, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Star Mississippi: No worries at all, I'll never be offended if a page I G13 gets restored :) Hey man im josh (talk) 15:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I made some minor improvements to the draft. Thanks for restoring the draft, hope to get to cleaning it up eventually! It definitely seems notable to me, as it's listed in two historical registries. Netherzone (talk) 00:25, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of drafts

[edit]

I asked above if there was a list of drafts and didn't see a clear reaponse so I al sectioning out. Is there a way to see a list of Doncram's drafts and userspace articles under construction?

I found this link above but it inckudes drafts from lots of editors and is hard for me to parse. How do I fond Doncram's work? Which ones have been deleted since he passed away? FloridaArmy (talk) 04:09, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have put up the lists in User:Doncram/Drafts. For the deleted drafts, suggest using User:SD0001/deleted-metadata-link to view snippets. (Or if you're an admin, use User:SD0001/quickViewDeleted.js to quickly see the full content.) – SD0001 (talk) 04:44, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just found that you basically singlehandedly created the bridges with buildings page and would like to inform you of how interesting of a read it was. The style was unlike other articles and included more personal explications, which I found cool, especially for such a niche topic. Having read through your user page I must commend you for your dedication to wikipedia. I appreciate the work you do and hope to see more of your works and eventually be as useful of a contributor. Draft:Fargo-Moorhead YMCA Sign

[edit]

I just published an NRHP article under the common name and, when I went to create a redirect under the NRHP listing name, I found one of Doncram's drafts. (Obviously no disrespect was intended.) Fortunately, it was very preliminary and was mostly a copy of another listing waiting to be overwritten. which is how I write articles too.

I redirected Draft:Fargo-Moorhead YMCA Sign to YMCA Sign for now but wasn't sure if that was the right action at this point. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:10, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Beechwood Cemetery (Durham, North Carolina) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability not established with substantive sources

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Reywas92Talk 04:56, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notification @Reywas92. I have declined the PROD as I found some sourcing. As it's said to be historic, I think it needs an AfD if you believe it still needs deleted but this should be enough for now. @FloridaArmy, this overlaps with some of your areas of interest. To friends of Doncram

[edit]

I'm continuing to delay CSD 13 speedy deletion of some old drafts of Doncram, when I spot them in time, and I just wondered if anyone is actually working on them, getting them ready for mainspace. There are dozens and dozens of them and I just wanted to check in and see if any editors had been spending time on them. If so, I'll continue to delay their deletion as stale drafts when I come across them. Many thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 19:10, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
