Wie erstelle ich Strukturformeln? (in short)

  • Welche Formel ist die Richtige?: Don't use valence bonds for drawing NaCl [:-)]. Only draw crystal structures if you have some experience with perspectives.
  • Software: a list of freeware / open source formula drawing programmes
  • Empfohlene Formate und das Hochladen: Use SVG, and as a second option PNG with a width of 1000-2000px. Upload on Commons is preferable. Upload as Public Domain.
  • Uniformität von Strukturformeln: How skeletal formulae should look: black on transparent; atom numbers, binding angles, carbons etc only if necessary in the context, and never in chemboxes; hydrogens only in aldehydes and on hetero atoms; draw methyl unless it makes the image to complicated: methanol is H3C—OH, not —OH (and use one of the two conventions uniformly in one formula); use abbrs like Me, Et, Ph, Φ only if absolutely necessary; a list of measures for line lengths, widths etc; wedges point to the assymetric atom (as per IUPAC, see Image:Calcitriol2.svg); don't link two assymetric atoms with a wedge.
  • 3D-Modelle kleiner Moleküle: see my last entry
  • 3D Modelle von Biopolymeren (Proteine): Tertiary structures of proteins: The legend should contain your source (link to the PDB page where the data comes from) and the type of model (cartoon, surface, sticks...). Unsourced images may be deleted without comment. Models drawn from crystal data are no crystal structures, they are visualisations of crystal structures.
  • Artikel mit fehlender Strukturformel: If an infobox misses a formula, it automatically generates a note "missing formula" linking to this page ("Wie erstelle ich Strukturformeln?"), and adds the article to the category "Strukturformel nicht vorhanden" ("Missing formula").

black box warnings

Why were the Black Box Warnings removed from the fluoroquinolone drug pages? Is this not to be considered THE most important information regarding this class? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.254.65.104 (talkcontribs) 02:41, 29 November 2008

I removed the warning text because Wikipedia entries cannot carry warnings or disclaimers of any kind in the article body. All the relevant information is still there, it's just worded differently—see, for instance, this section from Levofloxacin:
Tendon rupture
As with all fluoroquinolones, there are numerous documented cases of spontaneous tendon rupture, most often of the Achilles tendon. Such ruptures may occur both during therapy and long after therapy has been discontinued; there are documented cases where such ruptures have occurred over a year later. The risk of tendon damage is greater in people taking corticosteroids and in the elderly.
Since July 2008, all systemic fluoroquinolones (those taken internally, not as eye drops or ear drops) available in the United States must carry a boxed warning warning of the risk of tendon damage.
I happen to think this is much more informative, and presents the risk much more clearly, than
WARNING: Fluoroquinolones, including (insert drug name), are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages. This risk is further increased in older patients usually over 60 years of age, in patients taking corticosteroid drugs, and in patients with kidney, heart or lung transplants (See WARNINGS).
This is pretty irrelevant to a Wikipedia article. It doesn't even include the drug name (!), and refers the reader to a "WARNINGS" section when there is none—and rightly so, because Wikipedia articles are not package inserts. Besides, since tendinopathy is a class effect, it is covered in further detail in the main Quinolone article. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 10:34, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

The statement that "The risk of tendon damage is greater in people taking corticosteroids and in the elderly" though technically correct statistically based upon extremely limited data (as few if any physicians associate tendon ruptures with the fluoroquinolones and therefore would fail to report such events), it is not correct in reality. Such ruptures occur in all age groups including those who have NONE of the stated risk factors. Should we not make note of this fact as well? As that statement tends to trivialize the very real risk that the average patient may very well experience such a rupture absent of any predisposing factors. Including age and the use of other drugs.

Additionally would it be proper to include in the article the fact that such ruptures have been reported every year since 1982? (For well over twenty six years now) And that numerous petitions had been filed with the FDA since 1996 seeking these warnings, (only to be denied by the FDA) as well as the fact that the FDA had to be sued in Federal Court in January of 2008, before these warnings were even added? Or would such information be inapropriate for an encylopedia entry? 96.254.65.104 (talk) 00:55, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

JFW suggested that you write a Letter to the Editor concerning that study, Mastcell and the others who have commented would most likely be interested in helping... Are you already working on this, and if not, are you interested? --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:18, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

I've e-mailed him now. Thanks for your trust in me, but I have a lot of work in real life right now, and I anticipate on getting more work on a study on Wikipedia I wrote with TimVickers, and which is due for review soon... If e-mailed to JFW that I think you guys are more than competent, but if you need help with anything, I'd be more than willing to help out. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:32, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
With our study, I asked Jfdwolff and Samir to proof-read, and thanked them in an acknowledgment. Maybe you guys could do something similar. I think the authors should be the ones who have contributed substantially, and there should be a clear distinction between them and others who just support what was written. I'd be more than happy to sign the petition ;-) . Yes, my study was a bit secret, I'll try sending you a copy of the manuscript via e-mail. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:49, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

The molecular formula listed in the infobox: C10H14N5O6PS2, contains no molybdenum. This is odd, since both the structural formula and the article (not to mention the name of the compound) include it. I corrected the formula to C10H14MoN5O6PS2, but not being a chemist I would feel more comfortable if somebody knowledgeable checked it. I'm contacting you, since article history lists you as author of the infobox. Thanks in advance. Freederick (talk) 03:32, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Many people think that the name is odd and I am unsure if the nomenclature is used very carefully except by biosynthetic types. In any case, I rewrote the article and removed your nice graphic (which has a legitimate future in this or related article. One mortal sin that you committed (at least mortal to an inorganic person) is that your pic had 2-coordinate Mo, which my tribe does not like. If you think that I messed up, was too pushy, or whatever, feel free to comment or even revert. Thanks for bringing this article to the attention of WE-chem. Gol 1907

Hi Fvasconcellos, since the Gol 1907 final report has recently come in, I spent some time overhauling the article and preparing it for FA. I think it would be a good candidate for that, but it may need more work. If you have a chance, would you mind looking at it? Thanks, Crum375 (talk) 17:27, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

hanukkah page protection

I would like to ask the protection to be removed and give people a chance, tomorrow night is Hanukkah, Now is the time that people are viewing it and interested most. Maybe the trouble makers of the last years are already gone. thanks for your consideration.--Jena0987 (talk) 20:10, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Very well, but if heavy vandalism returns so will the protection. Doesn't Hanukkah start on Sunday? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:11, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Excuse me, but I think unprotecting the page was an exceedingly bad idea. The page was the subject of heavy IP vandalism when it was protected and it's rather obvious that this is the highest risk time for the article. Sometimes vandalism on that page can be so heavy during the holiday season that responsible editors can't keep up with it. The page was only semi-protected so autoconfirmed editors can still edit it. I think it's a bit out of process for an editor with as few edits a Jena to make a request like this on an admin's talk page, bypassing WP:RFP --Steven J. Anderson (talk) 16:41, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Sorry Steven, thats right, I am new here, But I did not try to bypass WP:RFP I saw that the first step is to talk to the editor that blocked it only AFTER that you can put a request there. here is the quote "If you are requesting unprotection, it is almost always a good idea to ask the protecting admin first before listing a page here."--Jena0987 (talk) 18:13, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes, asking the protecting admin first is always a good idea. Steven, I happen to agree that the article was being vandalized very heavily, and I am personally of the opinion that protection is never a bad idea when a page is most visible, but I do understand where Jena's coming from (a similar argument is quite well made at Wikipedia:For and Against TFA protection#Against protection). Don't worry; if vandalism returns, I will restore semi-protection, and if I'm not around for any reason WP:RFPP is just around the corner ;) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 18:21, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Right, My mistake, Hanukkah starts Sunday night (Monday actually) --Jena0987 (talk) 19:07, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
I apologize profoundly. I misunderstood policy. However, please take a look at the article history for today and re-protect. --Steven J. Anderson (talk) 22:03, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
With all due respect I still happen to believe that it is not the right time now to protect the page, contrary to your believe, even registered users as myself can not edit a page while it is semi-protected. A very interesting point was added today on the Hanukkah page, I am now researching it. I will maybe update tomorrow. But I understand your point of view, I helped to undo vandalism 2 times today, I will continue to do so. I think its still manageable so far.Jena0987 (talk) 23:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi Jena, I've been watching the page for these past 24 hours and I'm afraid protection is more than warranted. One of the factors I personally consider when deciding whether to protect is how long unconstructive edits stay on the page. This instance of vandalism was on the page for 20 minutes, and this deletion of important content was not reverted until five hours later, at a time when the page was probably being visited by most of the U.S. West Coast and English-speaking Oceania. I respect the productive edit by 84.72.66.41, but I believe that the thousands of people who will visit the Hanukkah article in the coming days deserve to see high-quality, reliable information and an article free of offensive vandalism. Unregistered users who wish to make edits can leave a note on the Talk page. By the way, users who have been registered for over four days and have made more than 10 edits can edit semi-protected pages; you meet both criteria, so you should have no trouble editing the article. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 11:42, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Fvasconcellos, I understand, I am sorry for asking in the first place.Jena0987 (talk) 18:09, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Paliperidone stereochemistry.

Hello Fvasconcellos. Hope you're doing well;). Would you mind to change the actual structural image of Paliperidone you have uploaded? The stereochemistry is not quite correct (see the discussion page there also); paliperidone as the commercial drug/active substance manufactured and sold by Janssen is racemic, i.e. consists of a mixture of both (R) and (S) enantiomers. I think the most appropriate structural drawing for racemic paliperidone would be either one with a "wavy bond" (not specific about chirality but indicating the chiral C atom), or such that displays both enantiomers. As of pharmacology, sources that I have to my disposition are indicating, that both (R)- and (S)-paliperidone are similar in terms of pharmacodynamics (receptor profiles, overall effects etc)., and only minor pharmacokinetic differences exist (some racemisation occurs in vivo, but that should be pretty much everything). Thank you in advance. Greetings, --Spiperon (talk) 18:03, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Pharmacology categorization

As I have mentioned before, I think there needs to be clear guidelines on how to categorize pharmacology articles, and a full, working, proposed categorization scheme that anyone can reference. I would be interested in taking a lead getting the discussion started, if it has not already been started somewhere else. I was thinking about creating a subpage of the pharmacology project, something like WP:PHARM:CAT, and starting a discussion there, in which we could get all the affected editors and admins involved in the discussion. Personally, as a physician, I would prefer to be part of the conversation, but leave it up to you drug experts/pharmacologists to ultimately create and agree upon the scheme, after which, people like me can implement it. Being completely honest, the Wikipedia:WikiProject Pharmacology/Categorization page is not helpful to most people in my opinion. What do you think of this idea? Is there something like this already going on? kilbad (talk) 04:10, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a great idea. The only thing going on right now is the discussion thread at WT:PHARM. Maybe we can take it to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Pharmacology/Categorization and simply rewrite the page when we've agreed on a scheme? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 13:17, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps I could move Wikipedia:WikiProject Pharmacology/Categorization to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pharmacology/Classifications, and then create a new categorization page, which will be blank for the time being, and on its talk page we can begin the discussion? kilbad (talk) 19:07, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
I think it would best be moved to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pharmacology/WP:DRUGS Classification, since this classification tree was created before WP:DRUGS was merged into WikiProject Pharmacology. I'll leave a note at WT:PHARM, let's see what others think. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 19:11, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
First, happy new year! Also, I have two questions (1) what is the uppermost pharm category? I want to see what the existing structure is like, and (2) where did you post that note, so I can watch the replys? kilbad (talk) 23:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
Happy new year yourself ;) The uppermost category is, predictably, Category:Pharmacology. I've left a note at the WT:PHARM discussion thread, and posted to WT:MED requesting broader input. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 17:22, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
I saw your notes, and will watch for any objections. If there are none, in two days, do you mind if I move that page and start the new categorization page/discussion? kilbad (talk) 18:34, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Not at all. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 18:35, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Happy new year

Thank you Fvasconcellos for the season's greetings, and also long time no see. I wish the same to you—happy new year! (And if you ever need a pharmacological copyeditor, I'm still around, and I'm not as bad with the sciences as my few experiences there suggest!)Outriggr § 05:56, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

I might take you up on that ;) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 13:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Happy new year from an old electrician too. And I hope you have been satisfied with our discussions this year. 70.137.134.30 (talk) 14:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

I have indeed. Happy 2009, and I hope you'll stick around :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:55, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
