Proposal for your congressional-death articles

Perhaps you could create lists of former US legislators who died in each decade. I understand that the US House sections would be quite heavy, but it's an idea. Baseball Player of the Week

I mainly did it (initially) to make there less scrolling to get to the current season, but then figured I should put it back in and think about putting the current year up at the top and the previous years (with 2008 at the bottom) down below. --posty (talk) 12:57, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Coming back to this some time after the AfD (my !vote would only have amounted to an WP:ILIKEIT endorsement), I see the table sorts alphabetically by first name, which I can change to surname if you think that would be preferable, here and the others. Dru of Id (talk) 22:00, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- I have actually been thinking about that myself. I do think if I click on the name column that it makes a little more sense to sort by surname than first name. List of members of the United States Congress by year of birth and death
[edit]Just curious as to why non-voting members are not included. Since the project seems to still in its infancy, it wouldn't seem much of a bother to add ResComms and Delegates, as they are technically member of the House, even if non-voting. IIRC, the last to die was Jaime Fuster about five years ago, so there are few enough of them and I don't see much of a reason to exclude them. Star Garnet (talk) 21:04, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's a fair question and my answer might not impress, but I see a big difference between being from a US state and having the power to vote and not. I think lumping them together implies that they are the same when, in fact, their power is different. The voting ability, in my view, is also the ideal cut off point where there cannot be any subjectivity for inclusion. I'm aware that there are not a large number of non voting members, but I feel the list would be a little watered down with members that have a reduced stake in legislation. In addition to your examples, Shadow congressperson would also need to be included, and I don't feel those people are in the same league as US Reps. I'm not totally exclusionary though, I have been thinking about this and although I think there is a big difference as I stated, I would actually be in favor of creating 1 new page with the same data that is exclusive to Delegates etc. That way appropriate recognition is still available. - Well, unlike shadow congresspersons, Dels/ResComms are legally members of the House, and have had committee voting privileges since at least the 70s, and have always had speaking rights. Their pay is the same, and the only real difference is they can't take part in floor votes, and there have been several exceptions to that limitation though the years. I'd support their addition, but that's just my two cents.
- Anyways, I'm interested in helping, and I was wondering if it would work for you if I started going forward from 1900, and we can each work towards meeting somewhere in the middle, and then proceed to earlier times. Star Garnet (talk) 05:31, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm glad to see someone else taking an interest in these lists as it will take a lot of work. If you want to begin at 1900 or whenever, that's fine. I myself would like to add more and assist with the expansion, but I'm not sure how much I will be contributing in the near future, hopefully some. I'm curious, are you planning on getting the entire project done as fast as you can or just slowly adding over the months and years? Either way, great to have you on board. - The format all appears to be matched and looks great. There are definitely a lot more names back then. The only difference I can see is shortening "At-large" to "AL". I have since finished and added the Reps for 1976-79 and will do the rest of the decade. We also seem to have gotten some help from someone who already did the 1970s senators. Re: Oldest senators/question
[edit]Hi! About the birth/death dates of members of Congress, I generally quote those reported by the Biographical Directory of U.S. Congress. Obviously I agree that any different date given from other sources must be signaled. As for the question about representatives and senators elected but not seated, my opinion is that they should be included in a separate table. Putting them in the table with people who effectively hold office is wrong - and so is the case of William Scott Vare indeed. However, I think we would ensure a better usability of the pages adding a new table for "controversial" cases, rather than mentioning them in a note.--Jacvan (talk) 09:20, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
