Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
Missing cite in Waitaki (New Zealand electorate)
[edit]The article cites "Scholefield 1950" (which was added by you back in 2011) but no such source is listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Or is it a typo in year? There are a couple more articles with the same error.
Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]]
to your common.js page. Thanks, Renata•3 03:21, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- Renata3, thanks for the heads up. That wasn't the only book reference missing; have added them both. Just ping me if you spot other NZ electorate refs missing; I probably know what they are. Schwede66 03:45, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- Perfect, thanks. Can you take a look at the search results here and fix the remaining ones as well? Renata•3 04:16, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- All sorted. Schwede66 04:48, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you! Since you did such a quick job at fixing these errors :) can you take a look at the other electorate articles in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors? Renata•3 16:07, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Émile Sadzawska
[edit]Hi Schwede66 - hope you are well. I was wondering if you could help with the article for the rower Émile Sadzawska and the recent edits made by User:Akadunzio. They keep changing the name of the subject (without sourcing) and when they finally did source the change, the info was not in the source they've provided. I've tried to discuss this with them, but they are saying I'm the one adding unsourced information (!) I've warned them about edit-warring, but this is getting silly now. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 17:51, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Lugnuts, all good at my end; hope the same is true for you. Well, this is a tricky one. Not the best communicator on earth. But where I did follow up and had a look at (Belgian) sources myself, they were spot on. I've discussed with Canadian Paul that this is going on and I assume that it's entirely correct. For myself, I've decided to just let them get on with it, look through their contributions once in a while, and report to CP. Going by CP's response, it seems that Olympedia is getting updated accordingly. Hence, I'd just back off, even if it feels the wrong thing to do. Schwede66 18:15, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi - yes, all good here thanks! I'd hoped they'd at least add a source as they go, rather than just changing it and coming back to it after a friendly prod. I'm of exactly the same mindset as you here - let them get on with it. I've just scrolled up their talkpage and see they have the same issue of adding unsourced content going back to the end of 2015. Oh dear. Thanks for your response too. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:28, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Wow. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 06:22, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

WPNZ Archive
[edit]Kia ora Schwede, was just wondering if you had any insight as to when the WPNZ noticeboard should be archived and how we go about doing that? I thought it may be as simple as copying it to a new subpage, but wanted to check in case there was a specific automated process or something. I also think it might be worth archiving the NZNC talk page when the current RfC finishes, given that's at the point where it struggles to load at times... Turnagra (talk) 08:46, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Turnagra, probably a good idea to archive as those pages are too long. No automated process has been set up so it’s a matter of cut-and-paste. Schwede66 14:48, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks – I've taken a shot at archiving the talk page, could you please have a quick look over it if you get a chance to double check I haven't messed anything up in the process? Turnagra (talk) 18:49, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Turnagra, looks good. Schwede66 16:38, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Elizabeth Rata
[edit]Hi Schwede66, I'm unsure if you saw the legal threats that were made yesterday on Elizabeth Rata. I wonder if you wouldn't mind just taking a cursive look at the page to ensure that it meets the standard of a biography of a living person? Thank you! Nauseous Man (talk) 18:19, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Nauseous Man, no, I did not. Where were the threats made? By whom? Schwede66 18:22, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Schwede66 made in two edit summaries by user:2407:7000:81E5:5300:B1F3:F760:E2D0:A21. Sorry for bringing this to you, but as somewhat of a novice editor with no familiarity with this type of incident, I wanted a more experienced pair of eyes on it. Nauseous Man (talk) 18:29, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Nauseous Man, thanks. I've put the page on my watchlist and I'll keep an eye on things. Given that I shall be moving house on Monday, I may not be overly responsive and it might be good for Gadfium to also keep an eye on things. With regards to the bio, it's somewhat imbalanced, with the recent controversy taking up too much space. I suggest you either trim that section, or significantly expand the rest of the article, to address the imbalance. Schwede66 18:36, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- {u|Schwede66}} will do! Thanks for that. Good luck with the move! Nauseous Man (talk) 18:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Blanket move discussion NZ your vote
[edit]Hallo Schwede66,
You have participated in a previous vote. There is a blanket move discussion initated by User:Spekkios to revert your vote on other pages which is here: Talk:Fox_Glacier_/_Te_Moeka_o_Tuawe#Requested_move_2_November_2021, in case you are not aware of it yet. Seeking an objective view...
[edit]Hi Schwede66! Hope all is well with you and that you're enjoying your new home. A couple of queries I thought I would seek your wise counsel on. Firstly, I've created a userspace draft for Rebecca K Reilly, a young Kiwi author who has this year burst onto the literary scene with the stunning Greta & Valdin. Having drafted the page, however, I am now doubting whether she meets notability guidelines yet. She won the 2019 Adam Foundation Prize in Creative Writing, but beyond that and reviews of the novel, there's not much out there about her yet. I wondered if you had any thoughts on whether I should move to mainspace now, or if it might be WP:TOOSOON?
Secondly, I'd quite like to create a page for Jeffrey Paparoa Holman, having created a Wikidata entry for him. He definitely meets the notability threshold (see [1] [2]) and I'm confident I could write a good article. However, we've interacted quite a lot on Twitter and via messages since I wrote the Jacquie Sturm article, so I am wondering if that gives rise to a COI. Am I right to think that I can still write the article, but should put it through the AFC process and declare the conflict? Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:00, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- Chocmilk03, all's well indeed; thanks for asking. Rebecca K Reilly does look shaky at best. At a quick look, I couldn't find a single reliable source that discusses biographical details. Without that, it would fail at AfD if the article got challenged. The Adam Foundation Prize in Creative Writing award by itself does not appear to be high-profile enough to add much towards notability. Jeffrey Paparoa Holman on the other hand would be fine. If you've never met him in person, some editors may say that there isn't a COI but it's better to be on the safe side. AfC is a good idea and rather than saying that you do have a COI, you could say that some editors may perceive you having a COI and you'd rather play it safe. That might get a better reception from the reviewer. Schwede66 21:13, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will leave Rebecca K Reilly for the moment, and keep an eye on her (I've set up a Google alert for her name in the meantime!). Great advice on Holman, I'll proceed on that basis. I suppose it's more about a concern of perceived bias, then being worried that I'm actually biased, if that makes sense. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:21, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message
[edit]Administrators' newsletter – December 2021
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2021).
- Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
- The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
- Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee Elections is open until 23:59, 06 December 2021 (UTC).
- The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
My bad - I always get Papanui Road and Fendalton Road mixed up. It's Fendalton which leads to the airport :) Thanks for fixing it! Grutness...wha? 00:04, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Grutness, well, thanks for writing it. But yes, there is a bus connection to the airport that goes via Papanui Road (you just need to change to a different bus at Papanui Junction). And if you do work at the airport in the north-east corner, you might be better off via Harewood Road. So some people will travel like that. By the way, did you know that I've just moved away from Christchurch? Now based in Golden Bay. Schwede66 04:39, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- No, I didn't! I hope you enjoy it up there. I'm likely to still be down here in Dunedin for the foreseeable future. As to the article, no prob, though I'm still undecided about the capitalisation of the title. I think it's usually seen with a capital A, but googling it it seems to be about 50/50. Grutness...wha? 05:58, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
[edit]A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

New Zealand schools
[edit]In response to your edit summary at Talk:Northcross Intermediate: The history of the WikiProject is complicated, and I've forgotten some of the details. There was a simple way to see any changes to New Zealand school articles, via a customised infobox. The infobox was not compliant with some standard, so the standard infobox replaced it in articles, and someone volunteered to maintain a list of schools instead which could be tracked with "What links here". After a few years they left the project and stopped maintaining the list. I don't remember why, but I maintain my own list rather than theirs, which is at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand schools/Recent changes, and I check all changes to linked articles daily using [3]. I use WP:NNZ to find newly created articles to add to the list. {{WikiProject New Zealand schools}} doesn't have any real value.-gadfium 21:59, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- Gadfium, I see. Thanks for the heads up. Schwede66 22:01, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
