Hey, dk, how've you been? Yeah, Ling took care of that lack of citations "issue". It just irks me that somebody would add three cite tags and then go straight to FAR without even waiting for the refs to be added. I am not familiar with this....Are the articles selected based their importance, quality, or both? Because if it's only about importance, I'm okay with the list (maybe swap Dong Zhuo for Yuan Shao); but if it's for quality also, then perhaps only three or four articles can go on there. _dk (talk) 05:38, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

FAs go on the list automatically. Others are selected by a bot script that takes into account importance (as defined by the wikiproject), rating (FA/A/GA etc.) and page views (as a measure of popularity). I've been booted over here by Ling, so I'm hijacking your talk page, dk :) I think I would disagree most with the inclusion of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei of all articles selected. They are important in their own right, particularly the romanticised Guan Yu lore, but overall I believe articles regarding pivotal battles should take their place or be added to the list as well. Perhaps the Battle of Guandu? And how about the Battle of Xiaoting/Yiling? I think both of these battles, alongside Red Cliffs, were particularly important chapters in Three Kingdoms history. I also agree with dk that Dong Zhuo is far less critical than Yuan Shao. It could be argued that he kicked off the entire Three Kingdoms era through his actions, but then the argument could be made for the Yellow Turbans rebels and the Ten Eunuchs as well. If anything concrete was passed down from the Three Kingdoms period, the most obvious would have to be Guan Yu and his spiritual influence on the Chinese cultural sphere....heck, it would be hard not to find an altar of Guan Yu in any Chinese community today! (Does he deserve this? hrm...not as much. If I stop editing tomorrow, you'll know he has come for me for that comment.) Tong Li

"Zhuge Liang" is correct, since Zhuge Liang was the one sent to negotiate with Sun Quan in Chaisang (as mentioned in the paragraph before that). Have fun preparing for midterms! Wu family shrine rubbing

Thanks. =D The names on the cartouches might provide some clues, but unfortunately I can't make out the characters....Though if we look at the battles around that time that features a bridge, then perhaps the Battle of Jieqiao? The presence of women is puzzling, though. And I certainly don't remember anyone in the Wu family (which Wu?) being in that battle... Or maybe the rubbing is made to commemorate some already ancient battle, suggested by the use of chariots (early Spring and Autumn period), or just a coup in the Han court (since high officials would be riding around in chariots with female courtiers around them). _dk (talk) 07:21, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Although his brother and nephew served as low-ranking officials, the tomb occupant Wu Liang (78–151) was one of those gentryman in the Eastern Han who did not want to spoil his reputation as a scholar by working for what he perceived was a corrupt government, so he declined many offers for official appointment (and this was even before the Disasters of Partisan Prohibitions). As a result, he became very well-respected. The epitath to his tomb reads:

"He studied widely and examined the texts in detail. He inquired into the roots of texts, and there was no book that he did not read. The departments of the prefecture and the district invited and summoned him to official posts, but he declined on the grounds of illness. He contented himself with the poverty of his humble home and was pleased with the righteousness that he learned every morning."

Furthermore, Valerie Hansen writes this about the scenes of stone-carved artwork of Wu Liang's tomb shrine (from which the rubbings were derived):

"Wu Liang's scope exceeded that of the Grand Historian. Like Sima, he depicted all of human history, but he went beyond him to show the land of the immortals, presided over by the Queen Mother of the West and her counterpart the King Father of the East, in the west and east gables of the shrine. The gables suggest the shrine was intended as a home both for his body-soul that would remain in the tomb, and for his spirit-soul that could travel to the realm of the immortals."

So this battle scene could depict any number of battles throughout history. Unfortunately, Cary Y. Liu does not specify which one. However, I thought a contemporary Eastern Han illustration of a battle scene was appropriate in an article focused on warfare in the Eastern Han period.--Pericles of Athens^Talk 07:54, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Then what of the image of the Han pottery soldiers? Is that not relevant either? They don't display actual soldiers who fought in the campaign against Dong Zhuo, yet they display how Han soldiers' outfits would have looked like in general. If there is an article on the military systems of ancient China, or of the Han, then those images might be appropriate. Or else these images can show up on every article that happens to be about battles in the Han Dynasty, and who knows where that will end! _dk (talk) 07:25, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't know if you still care about this, but the book I mentioned basically says that the battle on the bridge is not identified and is hotly debated. The scene depicted may be a battle fought by one of Wu Ban's superiors on the northern frontier, the conquest of Wu Ding against the southern Guifang (Land of Demons), some ritual, or pure symbolism. _dk (talk) 01:08, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Don't feel too intimidated by the article; I did not fill it up with a bunch of jargon that only people graduating from Harvard Business School would understand.
