[edit]Category:2019 AAF season
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 17:42, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Following this merger discussion, this category is pretty much redundant to Category:Alliance of American Football teams. This football league only had one season, and all 8 teams competed in it (WP:OVERLAPCAT). BLAIXX 22:14, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nom,
but when deleting the category, the template should be added to the parent category.Marcocapelle (talk) 14:35, 1 October 2019 (UTC)- @Marcocapelle: the template already belongs to Category:Alliance of American Football templates, no need to add to the parent category. BLAIXX 15:53, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- You are right. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:55, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- Support as unnecessary category with overlaps. Eagles 24/7 (C) 21:41, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: This category seems oddly specific and not likely to be defining for many if any of the people for whom it may describe. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:03, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support per WP:NONDEF. Place Clichy (talk) 14:31, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose – many of the subjects in this category, such as Vijay Prashad, Aroup Chatterjee, Sanal Edamaruku, Tariq Ali, Christopher Hitchens are well known for their opposition to Mother Teresa and have pubilished, written, and produced numerous books, films, and documentaries about this. There is in fact a whole article (see Criticism of Mother Teresa) dedicated to this. WP:NONDEF does not apply. The category should be purged of articles where this is non-notable but the category itself should be kept. Inter&anthro (talk) 16:25, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- Aroup Chatterjee is the only person for whom it is defining (as writing a book about Mother Teresa is the only thing he is notable for), but that is too little to keep the category. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:08, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- But Edamaruku and Ali have produced media critical of Mother Teresa, and Hutchens wrote both a book and helped produce a documentary. There are plenty of other categories were it is not the central deffining theme of many articles yet importance enough to be kept. Inter&anthro (talk) 01:51, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- Please nominate them too. Many articles, especially biographies, suffer from overcategorization, this is low hanging fruit to reduce it. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:32, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Category:White American Muslims
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge/delete as nominated. MER-C 10:24, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:White American Muslims to Category:American Muslims
- Propose merging Category:White American people by religion to Category:American people by religion
- Propose merging Category:Asian American Muslims to Category:American Muslims
- Propose merging Category:Asian American people by religion to Category:American people by religion
- Propose merging Category:Asian American Christians to Category:American Christians
- Nominator's rationale: per a host of reasons, namely WP:SYNT, WP:NONDEF, and WP:TRIVIALCAT among others. Categorizing biographies by ethnicity and religion is is generally discouraged upon unless there is good proof that it is relevant, which in these cases it is not. Unlike for example the African-American population, which have historic Islamic and Christian organizations associated primarily with that race (see Nation of Islam, Black church, etc.) no such organizations exist for White American and Asian American commuinities that distinguish on race. This explains why categories such as Category:African-American Muslims, Category:African-American Christians, Category:African-American people by religion etc. are appropriate but these are not. More so very few if any of these articles is there any mention of race and religion at the same time, hence the WP:SYNT and WP:NONDEF arguments. Inter&anthro (talk) 19:56, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Delete and upmerge all per this CfD. Place Clichy (talk) 20:01, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Total merge per reason below. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 20:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Some other categories were tagged with incomplete link to this discussion and some others from the same category-creating spree share the same non-defining intersection between ethnicity and religion. I tagged them with the following suggested action:
- Propose merging Category:Asian American Islam to Category:Islam in the United States
- Propose merging Category:Asian-American Christianity to Category:Christianity in the United States
- Propose deleting Category:Asian Americans and religion
- Propose deleting Category:Asian-Americans and religion
- Propose merging Category:African-American Buddhists to Category:American Buddhists (already deleted after CfD)
- Propose merging Category:Arab-American Muslims to Category:American Muslims
- Propose merging Category:African-American Hindus to Category:American Hindus
- Propose merging Category:African-American deists to Category:American deists
- Propose deleting Category:Hispanic and Latino American Jews (N.B. content is already present at American people of Jewish descent)
- Propose deleting Category:Hispanic and Latino American Judaism
- Propose deleting Category:Hispanic and Latino American people by religion
- Propose deleting Category:Hispanic and Latino Americans and religion
- Propose merging Category:White American Islam to Category:Islam in the United States
- Propose deleting Category:White Americans and religion
- Place Clichy (talk) 16:44, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- Support all but manually disperse Category:Asian-American Christianity in the tree of Category:Christian denominations in the United States. Marcocapelle (talk) 01:12, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle: I added more tagged categories, in case you wish to review them. Place Clichy (talk) 11:13, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- Previous vote unchanged. Many of the additional categories are container cstegories with one of the earlier-nominated categories as its only content. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:22, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- Regarding Category:Asian-American Christianity, all articles but one are indeed already in a subcategory of Category:Christian denominations in the United States, wether Presbyterian or Malankara (Oriental Orthodox). There is however Chinese American church, which is mostly a collection of external links to congregations primarily aimed at the Chinese diaspora. I don't really know what to do with this, I'm not even sure this article has a place in any religious category, except somewhere within Ethnic religion. Place Clichy (talk) 16:51, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle: I added more tagged categories, in case you wish to review them. Place Clichy (talk) 11:13, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, so this category can be deleted rather than merged. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:35, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose for African-American categories, per reasons I outlined in the initial nomination; that being that African-American religious practices and denominations are often notably distinct from the rest of Americans (see organizations such as Nation of Islam, Black Church, Black Jews, etc.). Support merging the rest of the categories mentioned, per WP:NONDEFINING. Inter&anthro (talk) 18:27, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Inter&anthro: the WP:OCEGRS guideline says that such intersection
subcategories should only be created where that combination is itself recognized as a distinct and unique cultural topic in its own right
. I agree that African American Christianity, Islam and Judaism are definitely such topics. However, I have serious doubts for the African American deists, Hindus and Buddhists subcategories. The last one was also deleted after the previous discussion, and is therefore eligible to speedy deletion per WP:G4. Place Clichy (talk) 10:55, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Inter&anthro: the WP:OCEGRS guideline says that such intersection
- Support all Too many intersections. Laurel Lodged (talk) 09:20, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
- Support merge of African-American Buddhists--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 12:34, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
- Support to Inter&anthro's point, in American Hinduism & Buddhism there aren't distinct, identifiable African American traditions. I'm also unaware of any African American-specific deist traditions or denominations. These categories generally seem to be constructed for sorting people by race, and are of limited use even in the case of ethnic-specific denominations since they don't distinguish between someone who is a member of a generic denomination but of a specific ethnicity, vs. someone who is a member of a specific, ethnically-defined, sect or tradition. --Spasemunki (talk)

Category:Malaysian Chinese Muslims
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. MER-C 17:44, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Malaysian Chinese Muslims to Category:Malaysian Muslims
- Propose merging Category:Singaporean Chinese Muslims to Category:Singaporean Muslims
- Propose merging Category:Malaysian Indian Muslims to Category:Malaysian Muslims
- Propose merging Category:Singaporean Indian Muslims to Category:Singaporean Muslims
- Nominator's rationale: to start off Category:Malaysian Chinese Muslims was already nominated at a CFD 4 years ago here, where there was a concencus to delete and upmerge. Not that much has changed since to change that concencus. The rational is pretty much similar to the CFD above, so I'll try to keep it brief. For the two Chinese categories, while it is true most Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore are not Chinese, there is very little to no discussion of this in the article that seems to warrent this category (see above at CFD for Category:White American Muslims). The two Indian categories are more straight forward: there is no mention that Fazrul Nawaz is of Indian descent, and Mokhzani Mahathir is only of very distant Indian descent, WP:NONDEF applies to both. Inter&anthro (talk) 20:28, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Comment from my understanding articles were moved to the X Chinese Muslim categoires due to confusion over the Hui ethnicity. I am tagging the participants in that discussion @Robertsky: @SpinnerLaserz:. I would also like to clarify that the first two categories' articles are all from what I can tell already in the more general Muslim category, making a merge unneeded and hence why they are nominated for deletion not merging. Inter&anthro (talk) 20:36, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Comment Thanks for the ping. Beyond the discussion on Hui ethnicity categories previously held, I have no constructive feedback for this CfD on the categories here as my focus on Wikipedia is currently still very much on content, references and anti-vandalism rather than categorisation. Apologies. robertsky (talk) 20:45, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Comment I think its time we merge these into these categories, same with the Muslims in America to make it more diverse as soon as possible. I was thinking requesting to merge into a more suitable category because we don't have organizations dedicated to them yet and I don't think they are suitable at that moment just yet because any race can be either, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, etc. So I think that categorization by race is not suitable. As someone who has a religious, I think that religion not the same as race (I met someone who is a Asian but practices Judaism and she told me that anyone of any race can practice Judaism). I suggest a total merge. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 20:47, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Upmerge per nom. If these are relevant to the Hui ethnicity, which has little relevance in Singapore, then they need to be clearly laballed as ethnicity categories. However, as this does not seem to be the case, categorizing only by nationality and religion is sufficient, per WP:OCEGRS. Place Clichy (talk) 12:18, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
