Overview

[edit]

This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

[edit]
From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators:

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.

The current coordinators are:

Name Position Standing for re-election?
Eddie891 Coordinator No
Gog the Mild Coordinator Yes
Harrias Coordinator No
Hawkeye7 Coordinator Yes
Hog Farm Coordinator Yes
Indy beetle Coordinator Yes
Parsecboy Coordinator Yes
Peacemaker67 Lead Coordinator Yes
Sturmvogel_66 Coordinator No
Zawed Coordinator Yes

  • The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates with twenty or more endorsements will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of eleven appointments (including the lead coordinator). The number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.

CPA-5

CPA-5 (talk · contribs)

Hallo, everyone, I've been active since 2016 but joined MILHIST two years later. I've been elected coordinator in 2019–2020 however due to real life stuff I didn't want to combine Wikipedia and real life stuff so I took a wikibreak on my last few months as coordinator. Well in general I wasn't been that active in the 2020–2021 term. At that moment I was organising myself and IRL stuff. Now I want to slowly come back. One of the reasons is because Wikipedia takes a lot of time and personally I like that but I try to make it more balance for my other hobbies and spare time. But I am happy to take back these duties with pleasure. MILHIST has felt to me as a second home and one of the places. Because it feels like a second home I want to pay the wikiproject something back. Currently, I'm only reviewing some nominations and when I have more time and enthusiasm then I'll re-edit pages.

Comments and questions for CPA-5

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • Since I mostly review ARCs and FACs within the project I've always been happy to help someone out in their nomination. One time I've reviewed 93 nominations within a span of three months. Getting it to almost 100 is a challenge but it is currently one of the proudest things I did on Wikipedia. I've also been really proud to improve my first GA. This was nice to feel how to get an article to a Good Article level and I hope I improve more articles to Good Article and even beyond.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I've recently got access to academic libraries and am planning to use this chance to expand my upcoming projects within my own country's history. One of the things I really like to do is getting involved in the Bugle. This is what I'm willing to continue in the near future. Getting involved in upcoming MILHIST projects and closing ARCs are also goals on the menu. I'm flexible, when someone needs my help whether they are a coordinator not as part of the team we're a big family who supports their goals and fights against their issues.

Gog the Mild

[edit]

Gog the Mild (talk · contribs)

I am going to largely repeat what I said last time.
I have been active for less than four years and a coordinator for less than two, so feel a little hesitant in re-standing. Nevertheless, MilHist has become my Wiki-home over the past 45 months and I have much appreciated the wonderful and creative space made available for me. Working as a coordinator seems a useful way of partially paying back for the use of the "playground" and perhaps helping to maintain it as the collegiate place that it is.

Comments and questions for Gog the Mild

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Some enthusiasm and some time. As a natural Wikignome I actually enjoy some of the more repetitive or routine activities, so I am able to free some of the more experienced coordinators' time up for some of the more high-skill activities.

Hawkeye7

[edit]

Hawkeye7 (talk · contribs)

I have been part of the project since 2007, and was a coordinator from 2012 to 2016, and 2018-2021. I was the project Military Historian of the Year in 2012, and the runner up in 2014 and 2016. I have created or improved 86 Featured Articles, 133 A-class Articles, and 319 Good Articles. I am one of the 1,000 most active Wikipedians. My particular field of interest is military logistics, the subject of my PhD thesis. Lately, I have written a series of articles about logistics in the Allied campaign in North West Europe in 1944. Our coverage of these campaigns has been patchy.

Comments and questions for Hawkeye7

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
The main project I worked on was improving the articles on the Manhattan Project. This involved the improvement to Good article status or better for over a hundred articles. The history of the Manhattan Project was turned into a Featured Topic. I then turned to the British nuclear weapons project, creating the articles on its history. It too is now a featured topic. Other articles I have enjoyed writing include British logistics in the Falklands War and Shuttle-Centaur, about a rocket.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
I have access to academic libraries and online journal resources, and have experience with military history research related to World War I and II. I also write and maintain Bots, in Perl and C#. The role of the coordinator used to be quite complex and I wrote the MilHistBot, initially to handle the work involved in promoting articles to A-class. This made the task of promoting A-class articles much easier. Since then I have had the MilHistBot clean up our project backlogs. Coordinators no longer have to deal with Category:Unassessed military history articles or Category:Military history articles with missing B-Class checklists, and we are now approaching our goals with regard to the overall quality of articles. Our biggest backlog concern is now the Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/A-Class review, where reviewers are needed.

Hog Farm

[edit]

Hog Farm (talk · contribs)

If Gog has reason to feel hesitant about running, I've been around even less than he has. I've been a registered editor since late 2019, but wasn't involved in MILHIST immediately. I was elected a coordinator last September and I've been an administrator since January. Most of my content work is related to the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War and I try to be an active reviewer at GAN/FAC/ACR, and I've been involved with the WP:URFA/2020 drive (which includes a number of MILHIST articles) as well.

Comments and questions for Hog Farm

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?

    • I've become reasonably familiar with the housekeeping coord tasks over the last year, so I've got experience closing ACRs, processing the contest, etc. I can also use the admin bit for cleaning up to prepare for moves, revdel when needed, and other housekeeping tasks.

Indy beetle

[edit]

Indy beetle (talk · contribs)

Howdy, I've been an active editor of Wikipedia since January 2016 and from the start was working on military history topics and very shortly thereafter joined WP MilHist. I used to work on a lot of World War II articles, but now I mostly focus on 20th century African military history. I've been serving as a project coordinator since 2020. -Indy beetle (talk) 07:37, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions for Indy beetle

[edit]
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I'm not as great with the technical side of things, but I've been around long enough to know most of Wikipedia's and MilHist's norms to be able to help newcomers. As far coordinator responsibilities have gone, I've pitched in to help assess B-class articles and done a little tagging here and there. I've also garnered experienced in a relatively obscure topic area, which allows me to offer informal advice to people who need it. I created a draft MilHist academy course as basic guide for people who might benefit from it: User:Indy beetle/sandbox/Writing about Africa.

Parsecboy

[edit]

Parsecboy (talk · contribs)

I've been around for a long time (started editing in mid-2006, joined the project sometime around 2008), and have been a coordinator here for a good chunk of it (from 2009 to 2011 and then from 2016 to the present). I primarily write articles on naval history - ships, admirals, battles, and the like.

Comments and questions for Parsecboy

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Writing 130 or so A-class articles over the last twelve or thirteen years, the majority of which are for WP:OMT, a MILHIST special project.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Like many of the old hats around here, I've seen a lot of things come and go. I'm familiar with all of the processes that are done around the project, and I'm very active. I'm an administrator, so if tasks come up that require those tools, I can help.

Peacemaker67

[edit]

Peacemaker67 (talk · contribs) G'day, for those that don't know me, I'm a retired Australian Army officer and live in South Australia. I've been a member of the project since 2011, and with the exception of a year break in 2016-2017, have served as a coordinator continuously since September 2013, with the last three years as lead coordinator. So, I know the ropes, and if I don't know something about the project I know who does (usually one of the coordinators emeritus). Being a coord is a lot less onerous than it used to be in my earlier days, thanks to Hawkeye7's Milhistbot, so the main coord jobs are now running drives, checking the monthly contest, closing A-Class reviews, handing out awards and setting up election pages like this one. I haven't been as active as a coord in the last term as I had previously, largely due to an off-wiki role I have which has been heavily impacted by covid. But that is under control now and I'm looking forward to a more productive next twelve months on-wiki. I like to celebrate individual project members' milestones in our monthly newsletter The Bugle, and nudge people to finalise reviews or ask for additional reviewers to keep our production line of quality content rolling. My content creation work is mostly in the sometimes rather fraught "Yugoslavia in WWII" topic area covered by Operation Bora which includes 45 FAs I've had a hand in, and also I have contributed to twenty or so FAs on Australian military history subjects, mainly bios of South Australian Victoria Cross and George Cross recipients, but also a couple of Frontier Wars incidents. Comments and questions for Peacemaker67

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • My reviewing at FAC, ACR and GAN. I haven't been as active so far this calendar year, but I've still managed to review about twenty FACs this term as coord, as well as a few FLCs, a dozen ACRs and a similar number of GANs. I expect to get back to my usual levels of reviewing and activity in the next twelve months. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 07:18, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have pretty much done everything coords need to know how to do, I'm here a lot because I'm retired, and I generally get stuck in to whatever needs doing in a timely way. I am also an admin, so can help with housekeeping jobs as needed by project members like page moving and deletions. I also have a strong track record of defending the project against those who would like to disrupt or undermine it and our collective efforts. Vami_IV (talk · contribs)

Howdy, pards, or Grüß Gott. My short and sweet is that I'm Hog Farm but with six times the amount of time on Wikipedia and one-tenth the quality content. But this is not a joke nomination. I've spent a lot of time on Wikipedia as both a WikiGnome and at WP:MILHIST, and feel very comfortable behind its curtains. Besides that, my credentials include a lot of free time, a lengthy resume of WikiGnomery, and the confidence of at least one current Coordinator. I am told I'm also a good team player. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 22:34, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions for Vami IV

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Fort Concho, easily. I live in the city the fort's located in, and the bringing of the article to FA was both a two year odyssey and an energizing dive into local and Texas history.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have reviewed dozens on dozens of articles at GAN, tens of thousands more as a regular assessor, and previously dipped my toes into WikiProject coordination at WikiProject Germany. For content, I have a large and diverse library presently focused on the Early Modern period (16th century and Louis XIV particularly), American Indian Wars, WWI, and WWII.

Zawed

[edit]

Zawed (talk · contribs)

Hi all, I'm a current co-ordinator for the Military History project, having been in the role for the past few years, and am standing for election for the 2021/2022 term. I started editing Wikipedia back in 2012 and since then have developed seven articles to FA status, 30 articles to A-Class, and over 80 to GA, most of them New Zealand military biographies. I occasionally dabble in other spheres, like Formula One, New Zealand colonial history and, just to be different, South Korean football (which is where I started back in 2012). Zawed (talk) 11:03, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions for Zawed

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Generally expanding and improving the quality of the New Zealand content in the project. A focus for a few years has been the New Zealand VC recipients, most of which are now A-Class with a few FAs. More recently I have been working on New Zealand flying aces, creating articles for a few and getting them to GA.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Having been around the traps for a while, I attend to a lot of the administrative-related tasks within the project - assessing articles, closing A-Class reviews, helping checking contest entries and so on.

Nomination for Coordinator Emeritus (Nick-D)

[edit]

Nick-D has been a member of the project since the early days. He was a coordinator of this project from February 2008 to March 2010 and then again from September 2011 to September 2014, including a year as co-lead coordinator in 2012–2013. In that time, he has made significant contributions to the project in many areas. Highlights have included: his co-editorship of The Bugle since 2012; award of the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves twice (2010 and 2014); he has successfully nominated 47 Featured Articles (mainly on Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Air Force operations and people from WWII); and he has been nominated seven times for Military historian of the year, placing in the top three five times. Having reviewed many of Nick's FACs, I find his articles among the hardest to nitpick, the prose is invariably excellent, he uses top quality sources and they are always MOS-compliant from the get-go. In recognition of his long-standing contributions to the project, on behalf of the @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I'd like to nominate Nick to be appointed as Coordinator Emeritus. The objective of this nomination is that the project and the coordinator team may continue to benefit from Nick's help and experience. While the position has no special responsibilities, it comes with the ability to act as a coordinator in all respects, and is held for as long as Nick wishes. If this nomination is successful, Nick would join Kirill Lokshin, Roger Davies, TomStar81 and Ian Rose who have been Coordinators Emeritus since 2008, 2009, 2018, and 2020 respectively. The appointment would be in addition to the coordinators appointed via the above election, and unlike the general coordinator election, the voting period commences immediately. By tradition, all project members are asked to indicate their support or opposition to Nick's appointment below. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 07:51, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
