The Benty Grange helmet, on a modern transparent support

The Benty Grange helmet is a boar-crested Anglo-Saxon helmet from the 7th century. It was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1848 from a burial mound at the Benty Grange farm in Monyash in western Derbyshire. The grave had probably been looted by the time of Bateman's excavation, but still contained other high-status objects suggestive of a richly furnished burial, such as the fragmentary remains of a hanging bowl. The ornate helmet was constructed by covering the outside of an iron framework with plates of horn and the inside with cloth or leather, now decayed. It would have provided some protection against weapons, but may have also been intended for ceremonial use. It was the first Anglo-Saxon helmet to be discovered; others have been found at Sutton Hoo, York, Wollaston, Shorwell, and Staffordshire. The helmet is displayed at Sheffield's Weston Park Museum, which purchased it from Bateman's estate in 1893. (Full article...)

Red Ribbon image

Copied from WP:ERRORS:

I can't see why we're using a rubbish logo instead of an image that's actually relevant to the days events, but if we are, 'awareness ribbon' should be wikilinked since the term isn't widely understood outside the US Modest Genius talk 01:32, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why not use Image:Rosaparks.jpg or Image:DpedroI-brasil-full.jpg instead? Modest Genius talk 01:40, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Google has the same so-called "rubbish logo" on their website, too. It can't be that "rubbish"... --74.14.20.24 (talk) 13:13, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As the international symbol of World AIDS Day,[1], an image that has been here one this page in some form since 2005[2], this is one admin who is reluctant to change it. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:50, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

world aids day and union day (romania)

[edit]

why are world aids day and union day in romania listed differently that the rest of these anniversaries / events? it seems like they should be listed like all the others e.g.:
December 1

just my opinion. (edited) badmachine (talk) 07:59, 2 December 2008 (UTC)oh... never mind. i just looked at dec 2 and see that 2 are at the top and the rest are listed as usual. odd format, but consistent. carry on. badmachine (talk) 08:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The difference you are seeing is that holidays and observances for each day are listed separately at the top. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:22, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2016 notes

  • December 1, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the opening of The Pit, a basketball arena on the campus of the University of New Mexico. The Pit was the site of the NCAA Final Four in 1983, including a famous upset win and celebration by coach Jim Valvano. Including the date annually would not be appropriate, but the 50th anniversary may be a worthy addition. Laszlo Panaflex (talk) 02:43, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
