Brasília and Brazilian Federal District

What's the difference between the two? Are they the same? I cannot tell by reading the two articles, although there are a lot of repetition between them. It´s almost like that, but Distrito Federal has federal representation in the Congress(Both at the Senate and the Camara). And Brasilia is the administrative capital per si, while Distrito Federal compasses both that city and most of the suburbs. André

Question about Brazilian names

I noticed that many Brazilians on Wikipedia are referred to only by their first name. (See Brazil national football team for an example.) I was just wondering why that is, and since it seems to be consensus, maybe you should add it to WP:NC. Icestryke (talk) 04:25, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

FYI - A massive discussion is taking place at a Request for comment (RfC) Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people. About 50k of articles are currently unreferenced and therefore in danger of deletion, some of those are on Brazilian subjects, e.g. Mario Schmidt (historian and writer) was speedy deleted for being unreferenced and Márcio Thomaz Bastos, your Minister of Justice was double endorsed for deletion. I will add the proper template on the main page to have a bot generate the cleanup list after some days (hopefully). The cleanup link in the title above will then point to a list of unreferenced articles with the WikiProject Brazil template on its talk page. Please revise articles on the list, when possible,

1. review them for contentious unsourced information pr WP:BLP concerns
2. add references (you may e.g. lift references from the Brazilian page, if that page exists)
3. remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template from the article.

Brazil-specific Disambiguation page: proposed move

At Talk:Luiz Henrique#Is it a Dab?, i just proposed a move of the (supposed) Dab Luiz Henrique (which consists entirely of BR footballers with names like Luiz Henrique Rosa and Luiz Henrique Koprowski, and doesn't appear to qualify as a Dab page). I based my reasoning on my reading of Portuguese name#General, which i understand to apply fully to Brazil (beyond the nuances provided by the AFAI-can-see inapplicable succeeding sections). I'm an experienced Dab-cleaner, but as to Brazilian culture, i'm pleased just to come as close as i do to pronouncing "Pixote" correctly -- and to have suspected that some form of "double surnames" might come into play. (I've been called out for mispronouncing "Manhã de Carnaval"!)
What the list have in common seems to be the given name "Luiz" and the maternal surname "Henrique", which doesn't appear to justify a Dab page, but the content could give a start to a {{given name}} page Luiz (and/or, it now occurs to me, a {{surname}} page Henrique (surname)). Specialist knowledge of Brazil is likely to improve the discussion at the section i linked above; please give a thot to participating. Thanks!

Please don't do that. Your take on the name "Luiz Henrique" (or "Luís Henrique") is wrong. With all probability, both Luiz (Luís) and Henrique are given names. While a maternal surname Henrique is not completely impossible, it is a rare surname; on the contrary, "Luiz Henrique" or "Luís Henrique" are quite common given names. Work needed

Kay, people, the history articles on here are terrible and those that are available are either badly written, non-formatted or hilariously wrong/biased. A number of major historical events lack good information, pages on Presidents and such are mostly two-liners. Even French Wikipedia has more stuff than us. I've worked a bit on fixing the political articles and some history articles on my knowledge, but I both lack the references needed and the time to undertake such a tedious task alone. I say it's time we all dive in and fix it up. As it stands now, the articles are terrible. They really need a group effort. --Petrovic-Njegos (talk) 21:28, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

The Revolution of 1930 is the most obvious, as it's two lines long and it's a defining pivotal point; Constitutionalist Revolution isn't great either; Getúlio Vargas's page is both incomplete, poorly organized and biased; there are NO articles on the Integralist rising or the Communist-ALN revolution; nothing on the 1923 revolution in RS; Eurico Gaspar Dutra's article is tiny; and articles on political parties are short and misleading.--Petrovic-Njegos (talk) 20:39, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

At the outset, yes, but the military era pages are also too short. But Vargas' era, from 1930 to at least 1954 are in woeful need of help. Then I am not the right person to help you out. Vargas tortured 20,000 people, murdered hundreds and senti thousands to intermnent camps. I can't see no godd in someone like him. Maybe I can give you some help. I am mainly involved in other messy subject - Brazilian demography - where I am having to deal with some tons of sources that don't say what they are reported to say; but I am interested in Brazilian history. I am also not exactly a fan of Vargas, but I think I can be fairly objective about him. He did torture and kill people. He also lead the country during a difficult period - WWII included -, and was able to take some advantage of the struggle among the great powers to lever Brazilian development. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Templates in Category:Brazil municipality templates

There seem to be two formats of templates in this category:

• Some are named "Municipalities of Foo" (where "Foo" is one of the states). Quite a few of these are incomplete, with no actual municipality names in them. Most of those that have names (all but {{Municipalities of Rio de Janeiro}}) have the names grouped. The grouping appears to be somewhat different in some of these.
• Some are named "XXXMunicipalities" (where "XXX" is the name or abbreviation of one of the states). Most of these (all but {{Santa Catarina Municipalities}}) list the municipalities without any grouping.

In two cases, this results in the following duplication of templates:

• {{BAmunicipalities}} and {{Municipalities of Bahia}}
• {{ESmunicipalities}} and {{Municipalities of Espírito Santo}}

Personally, I prefer the templates with the names grouped and named "Municipalities of Foo", but I wanted to bring this to your attention because I didn't know if the Project members have a preference. I was thinking of filling in the templates that have no names, but wanted to check with you first. I would like to propose the following:

• Pick a naming convention for the templates (either "XXXMunicipalities" or "Municipalities of Foo"), then merge the duplicate templates and rename any that need it.
• Pick a format (either group the names or not) and standardize the formats. If grouping, decide what level of grouping is wanted.

In both cases, "Municipalities of Foo" is better organized, though "Municipalities of Espírito Santo" is incomplete. Normally, "Municipalities of Foo" templates are better, but some states have no template at all, and some states such as São Paulo have unique templates. small correction about Igreja Matriz

Just want to make a small correction on Vila Bela da Santissima. [1] Igreja Matriz is the name of the church, not a type of church. Igreja = Portuguese for church, and Matriz = is the name, and should therefore be written with capital letter.

"Today due the to fact that most inhabitants descend from former African slaves the town creates the impression of a town in the African jungle rather than in one the Amazon jungle" is in my opinion somewhat exaggerated. It's not a town of black people, they are distinctly Brazilian but with a higher average of African [physical] features than elsewhere.

Help with some translation

The Bernardo Vieira de Melo page has recently been created on the English Wikipedia, having been translated (using a machine translation, I'm fairly sure) from the Portuguese page. I have managed to clean up most of the faults of the machine translation, but I am unable to clarify one apparent idiomatic problem. The original Portuguese text contains the sentence:

Em 10 de Novembro de 1710 deu o 1º Grito de República do Brasil, sendo preso em Recife em 1712 e embarcado para Lisboa com seu filho.

which the machine translation renders as

On November 10, 1710 gave a cry of the Republic of Brazil, being arrested in Recife in 1712 and shipped to Lisbon with his son.

Clearly, this is not a valid translation. Can anyone here provide a better one? I have tried to contact the article's original author on this topic, to no avail. WikiDan61^ChatMe!_ReadMe!! 16:21, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Systematic removal of HDI data for Brazil

Someone apparently spent considerable effort to add data from List of Brazilian states by Human Development Index to the infoboxes for each state. They seemed to me be relevant; I'm not familiar with HDI. User:Hentzer has removed most, if not all, of the HDI data from the state infoboxes without any comment or explanation. Have I missed a consensus to remove HDI? Thanks, I'm concerned when I see systematic deletions. SBaker43 (talk) 05:23, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

The beginning part of the page talks about the Tapirapé people being a culture still existing today, but the rest of the article only discusses the Tapirapé in the past tense, stopping on their history at the 1950s, the beginning of major colonial contact. Doesn't that seem a bit conflicting? Ok am doing small English copy-edit. Some points:

• "just war" for whom? Really? it is not they who asked inquiry from government?? seems odd
• "inquiry" (profligate of autos??)... I am sure this is wrong, you have no suggestion?
• "Tapuios" why did you remove? it is in citation.
• "loss of freedom" is not the way this is said in English, sovereignty should be the word here, unless you have a special justification
• "regional society" does not exist in English, unless in Portuguese is referring to a specific organisation, nearby settlements is correct otherwise.

The colonists had asked for permission from the Portuguese Crown to respond to Muras' resistance with a "just war", which, in this context, means a license for the colonists to wage an all-out war and exterminate or (more likely) enslave the Mura.

"Devassa" is a kind of inquiry, I suppose. A legal procedure against activities seen as illegal at the time. They would lack the modern requisites of presumption of inocence, contradictory, etc., though. "Autos da devassa" were the documents relating to the devassa - accusation, evidences, alegations, confessions, etc. It does not have a precise equivalent in modern Portuguese language, nor in modern Portuguese or Brazilian law.

"Tapuias" is a term that essentially means "non-Tupi Amerindians". In this context, it is confusing, since the Mura themselves, who were not Tupian, would be "tapuias".

• OK, I see the challenge, but since it's in the middle of the quote, it needs to be reinserted. Brackets could be used to help reader... eg [other] Tapuias. Maybe you find a good way to reinsert it? thanks :)

I don't think the Muras had "sovereignity" that they could loss; they certainly had not a State. The original says "liberdade", which translates into English as "freedom" or "liberty", not as "sovereignity" - which would be "soberania" in Portuguese.

• sovereignty in English does not imply any legal documentation or official statehood, it simply refers to running your own life (or group). The present wording in English is too limiting in its scope. Sovereignty is this exact context is always used in aboriginal politics to mean exactly this, so I'm going to replace it in the text.

"Nearby settlements" would be wrong in this context, as nearby settlements quite probably would have joined the Cabanos as well. What the text means is the central colonial authorities in Belém, and the loyalists around it. "Regional" here, at least in Portuguese, is opposed to "local".

• 'regional society' has an entirely different meaning than what you are thinking, it refers to a company or non-profit organisation. 'settlements' effectively does imply colonial authorities as you say, it does not imply other Cabanos. Settlement in this English context is standard terminology to express a significant colonial locality (as opposed to local aboriginals). Does 'sociedade regional' mean Portuguese capital far away or local Portuguese towns? If we're 'local colonialists' vs the 'colonialist authorities many km away', then something like 'regional political authorities' would be more appropriate. This needs more clarification, thanks :)

Tapuias: I propose something like "the Muras and tapuias (a name that doesn't designate an actual tribal identity, but merely stands for non-Tupian Amerindians)". I fear that the use of that term in the original is a sign of poor research, and consequently of poor quality of the source; a Historian of colonial and/or Imperial Brazil should know that the word is completely imprecise. Perhaps this is a quotation from a primary source, that the editor in pt-Wikipedia failed to recognise as such?

Sovereignity: OK; it sounds really strange to me, but that's probably because Portuguese is my first language.

Nearby settlements: this expression conveys to me the impression of small villages close to the Muras. But those would be probably on the side of the Cabanos, too - the Cabanagem was a wide uprising among the lower classes of Pará, not an ethnic revolt against the Portuguese and White Brazilians, and it was particularly strong in the hinterland. The Muras and other Indian tribes played a secondary role in it. What the original text means is quite certainly the authorities in Belém; the author would be thinking of "region" here as meaning the whole of Pará. I think "regional political authorities" may do the trick, though of course the original text would probably be minding not only the authorities, but the establishment around it, including merchants, contractors, landowners, and other private people whose interests were best served by the established order instead of the rebellion. Advice about translating the full name of Salvador, Bahia

At Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#Salvador, Bahia, there has been discussion about the most accurate English meaning of São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos because the current translation ("Saint Savior of All Saints' Bay") seems inadequate. However, most of the participants in this discussion (including me) are not native Lusophones or experts in the Portuguese language, so perhaps someone here (maybe a native of Salvador, Bahia!) could offer some useful information or advice at WP:RD/L#Salvador, Bahia. It was actually the previous translation ("San Savior of All Saints' Bay") that seemed inadequate, because "San" is Spanish, not English, and it doesn't make sense to translate one word into Spanish and the rest into English. I recently edited it to "Saint Savior of All Saints' Bay", because Saint Savior is an expression occasionally used in place names in English. Another option is "Holy Savior of All Saints' Bay", though that seems to reflect "Salvador Santo da Bahia..." rather than "São Salvador da Bahia...". Brazilian Portuguese help

Hi! What would be the Brazilian Portuguese words for "Recovered" and "Unrecovered" as in the recovery or lack of recovery of a human corpse? What is "Storage"? And is "Cozinha" used for an aircraft galley? It's for a translation of an Air France 447 seat map WhisperToMe (talk) 15:43, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

The litteral translation for "recovered" would be "recuperado". "Achado", "encontrado", "reencontrado" are also options; without knowing the immediate context, it difficult to chose. "Unrecovered" would be "não recuperado", or "perdido", or "desaparecido". If talking about a missing human corpse, the usual words would be "encontrado" vs "desaparecido". "Storage" as in "warehouse" is "armazém"; "storage" as in "container" would be "container" in Brazilian Portuguese (I suspect that it is unacceptable in European Portuguese, which might have a different word instead of this Anglicism). "Storage" as in "the act of storing" would be "armazenamento". And yes, cozinha would be any kitchen, including an aircraft or ship galley. Ninguém (talk) 16:12, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

The RMS Magdalena was wrecked on the Tijucas Rocks, between the Carragas and Palmas Islands, approx 15 miles south of Rio. Some small parts of the ship, such as her bell and some portholes are now at the Jurujuba Yacht Club, Niterói. Photographs of these would be appreciated for use in the article. A task force for Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo

I know this is WikiProject Brazil, but can there be a Rio de Janeiro Task Force and a São Paulo Task Force? I thought about a Rio de Janeiro task force since that city is hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics and a Sao Paulo task force because it is the largest city in Brazil. The articles about buildings and places in those cities don't have as much extensive coverage as their counterparts on the Portuguese Wikipedia, so such articles need expansion soon. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Task forces for instructions. However, it is advised that only big projects (such as 100 users or more) should begin creating task forces. A task force for a project of four or five users may be doomed to failure. It may be better to keep everything Brazilian-related just at this project.

There may be a better alternative: instead of task forces, you may organize the work in subpages for specific topic, such as listing some important pages related to Rio de Janeiro (or other topics) needing creation, references, expansion, NPOV check, copyedit, etc. Such pages may be useful even for a single user, and may be turned into task forces if they show their own autonomy. List of Santos FC seasons

I have FINALLY finished the Santos FC season list. It took a lot of work but I think it is good enough to be a FL. I hope this list serves as a basis for other editors to do a season-wide list on their favorite clubs like Flu, Fla, Sao Paulo, etc. (since I have done most of the work lol all you have to do is change a few words, nvm if your team is from the Sao Paulo state).

I just want some imput to see what needs to be done before I turn it in to the FL people for them to judge. Looking at other club's season lists (looking at Barcelona's hurts my eyes by seeing how ugly and disorganized it is...and note! Apart from mine, that is the best one I have found) and seeing how they still became FL, I don't think it will be a problem making my list to FL status. I just want pointers.

Saci

I am just wondering why the word "Saci" appears misspelled several times with a "ç" on the article about the Brazilian folkloric figure, if in Portuguese the character "ç" is never followed by the vowels "e" or "i" and only can be followed by either an "a" or an "o" . There's no sillabe "çi" or "çe" in the portuguese language, only "ci" and 'ce'. The correct pronunciation of this word is "saci" and not (ever, never, not in time or space) "saçi". What is "Colon" in "Colon road"?

In a featured list candidacy I was asked to wikilink "Colon" in "Colon road" (Estrada do Colon). I am not sure which Colon is meant here, so I hope to get some input from somebody more familiar with the region. The article Monarchies in the Americas says that there was a failed attempt in 1993 to restore the Brazilian Monarchy. But that info has no wikilinks, articles such as 1988 Constituent Assembly or History of the Constitution of Brazil provide no further information, and the pretenders Dom Luiz de Orleans e Bragança and Dom João Henrique have no articles (at least, under such names). In 1992, Brazil's Congress passed an amendment to the Constitution which determined the holding of a referendum for voters to decide if the country should have a republican or a monarchical regime ruled by a presidential or a parliamentary system. Interlagos

I wonder is Interlagos's Autódromo José Carlos Pace situated in the Interlagos neighbourhood, as the Interlagos article claims. To my understand, the Portuguese Wikipedia's article says the neighbourhood in in the district of Socorro and the circuit is in the district of Cidade Dutra. Can anyone confirm this, as I had to rely on Google Translate to read the Portuguese article. I have already asked about the circuits location at WikiProject Formula One's talk page but no one answered.

While the Portuguese language Autódromo José Carlos Pace's article says it is located in the neighbourhood of Interlagos, in Socorro district, the Cidade Dutra's artile says the circuit is actually located there. Google Maps places "Cidade Dutra" right on the circuit when you zoom the map to a certain scale. Take a look at this map (Socoro district is highlighted in blue) and compare it with Google Maps (for some reference: the line separating Socorro to the districts to the northeast in the map is the river that appears at Google Maps). I find it reasonable to say the circuit is at Cidade Dutra, though I'm not 100% sure. Victão Lopes ^{I hear you...} 00:29, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Election and new mayors

Well, as most of you surely know, Brazil will be electing mayors for every municipality in its territory in the next month. Excluding the cities that will reelect their mayors, I guess there will be thousands of articles which will require edits in January 2013, when all those new mayors take power. I am referring to the "|leader_name = " part of all infoboxes (in articles that have been added an infobox already) and, in some cases, to the "History" or "Politics" sections, in case they exist. Is there a way to program a bot so it could do the work for us, or should we assemble a task force of editors willing to update the information? 'Cause until recently I still came across articles on Brazilian cities with infoboxes containing mayors that ruled until 2008, suggesting nobody updated the information even years after the election.
