Prestige rankings of film festivals

[edit]

There are some inherent point of view problems with assigning prestige rankings to film festivals as "major" or "A-list". By their very nature, film festivals, from Cannes to a regional, four-day festival in some small town somewhere, are prestigious. Even festivals that claim they aren't prestigious (Sundance for example) are prestigious for saying they aren't prestigious.

But prestige is difficult to quantify, even with third-party sources. On Wikipedia, there is probably no way to note a film festival's prestigiousness, other than to say they are all prestigious.

The problem of assigning rankings of prestige exists in at least three works that fall under the purview of this task force:

  • Film festival - Has a listing of the so-called "A-list" festivals, a classification that is highly suspect. The issue is being discussed at Talk:Film festival#A -list festivals.
  • List of film festivals - I've done a lot of work on restructuring this list and the related other Lists of film festivals over the past year. With the List of film festivals, I have endeavored to summarize the world's "major" film festivals, despite my qualms about saying something is "major". I think I've done an okay job for casual readers, but it occasionally needs pruning because it serves as a POV magnet, and frankly, I'm not sure if my own POV hasn't crept in somewhere. The purpose and scope of this list needs to be more clearly defined, and I need help doing that.
  • {{Film festivals}} - A puny navigation template that more or less duplicates the so-called "A-list" of the Film festival article. At one time, there was even an A-list film festival category, which was deleted. This is documented at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 July 5#Category:"A" Film Festivals. On Template talk:Film festivals, I proposed that the template be deleted as well. My comment received no replies, and I've held off on a TfD nomination, because I wonder if somehow the template might be useful. The problem is, if the template is really fair, it would include all film festivals, which would make it too cumbersome to be useful. — WiseKwai 12:57, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied at Talk:Film festival regarding some of the A-list concerns. I largely echo your sentiments - there's a huge risk of POV, but probably some utility to identifying the incontrovertably important fests. The question is how to determine this through objective criteria. Girolamo Savonarola 13:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA nominee: Reel Affirmations

[edit]

I've authored and nominated Reel Affirmations for Good Article status. But with their huge backlog, I'm worried no one will review this article any time soon. So, if you feel up to it, I'd appreciate a review. Tips on reviewing good article candidates and how to pass or fail current candidates are available. The article is listed on the Good article nominations page under "Social sciences and society|Media|Miscellaneous Media." Thanks! - Tim1965 (talk) 15:20, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Style guidelines

[edit]

I think we are in desperate need of a more detailed style guideline for film festival articles. We need to set up a list of criteria and preferably upgrade the articles on festivals featured in the Core list projects, so that they could serve as models for any future articles covered by this taskforce. Anyone willing to add his 2 cents? Timbouctou (talk) 11:54, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Film festivals

[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:17, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While mindlessly patrolling new pages I suddenly saw a veritable flood of MMFF articles; regrettably none of the new ones were of particularly high quality. It struck me that a major missing item was a navigation template, so I created {{MMFF}}, and I've spent a while p-layiog with it today to "get it right".

IT seems to me to be a good time to pass the baton to a film festival buff, so I've tagged it with {{film}} on its talk page and thought it might do no harm to mention it here.

The reason for the mention is because many of the MMFF articles are in need of love and attention. Some factual verification would not go amiss either. I've no idea where to start. I was just passing through. I'm not a film person I'm afraid. So I'm hoping you guys can adopt the rather sketchy articles A N Other has created.

Come to that, do please, improve the template! Fiddle Faddle (talk) 17:25, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Conflict of interest?

[edit]

Dear Film Festival taskforce, I'm new to Wikipedia so I have a question. I work at a film festival, and I would like to work on its article (which is very much in need of work!). I totally understand the policies about not advertising or promoting etc.; but even so, I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to work on this article at all, even if I stick to factual matters? Can you let me know what you think? Thanks!--Maduro five (talk) 22:17, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP 1.0 bot announcement

[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:18, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced living people articles bot

[edit]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Film festivals task force/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you. Okip 02:47, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Women's History Month is in March

[edit]

Hi everyone at WikiProject Film festivals!

Women's history month is around the corner, in March, and we're planning the second WikiWomen's History Month.

This event, which is organized by volunteers from the WikiWomen's Collaborative, supports improving coverage about women's history during the month of March. Events take place both offline and online. We are encouraging WikiProjects to focus on women's history related to their subject for the month of March. Ideas include:

  • Improving coverage about film festivals that celebrate women in the film industry
  • Developing content about women involved in film festivals

We hope you'll participate! You can list your your project focus here, and also help improve our to-do list. Thank you for all you do for Wikipedia! SarahStierch (talk) 21:46, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scam film festivals

[edit]

While peforming new page patrol, I came across an article about Varadraj Swami, which let me to articles about his films (The Endless, Recession, Akhbar Ka Ek Panna, and Shades). All of these films listed as accolades selections at various film festivals, including the New York Short Film Festival, the Los Angeles Short Film Festival, etc. My curiosity was piqued when all of these festivals used the same web address (http://www.mamut.net), which is essentially a cheap webhosting provider in Norway. More research led me to this article, which pretty clearly spells out that these festivals and all of their siblings are basically pay for awards schemes (the film industry equivalent of a diploma mill). Variety even published an article about the parent organization ("Annual Program Without Frontiers") regarding an Interpol investigation of the organization for computer crime.

The question is, do we care to root out references to such scams in film articles? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:14, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Expert attention

[edit]

This is a notice about Category:Films/Film festivals task force articles needing expert attention, which might be of interest to your WikiProject. It will take a while before the category is populated. Iceblock (talk) 16:42, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Film Festival World

[edit]

FYI - The link to Film Festival World under resources is no longer active. I've added a note about the 404 error. Hopefully someone here knows whether the page has moved or if it is completely defunct. Thanks! --Tbennert (talk) 18:03, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Beyond the official site, and an IMDb link, if it exists, what else is really needed?" Social media? Youtube or Vimeo page? FilmFreeway or Withoutabox page? Is anything really"needed"? Kire1975 (talk) 02:48, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chidananda S Naik, which is within the scope of this WikiProject. Jeraxmoira🐉 (talk) 14:49, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
