Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Baseball

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Baseball. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Baseball|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Baseball. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Many of the baseball-related deletion discussions center on questions of notability. In this case, the guideline Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball/Notability (WP:BASE/N) may be helpful.

Articles for deletion[edit]

2023 MLB London Series[edit]

2023 MLB London Series (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Non notable series with no non-routine coverage that can be covered sufficiently at MLB London Series. Esolo5002 (talk) 18:19, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep I agree that the current state of the article is not great, but no non-routine coverage is just an odd thing to say when WP:BEFORE is conducted. Here's CNN, a news site that doesn't often cover baseball. Here's from The Guardian. I could keep going but that seems unnecessary. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:26, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Events and England. WCQuidditch 18:58, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom, although "notable" is something of a red herring. Other than the full team rosters, all of this information should be in the MLB London Series article. MLB has demonstrated that neutral-site international games are not so unique that there should be be stand-alone articles for each of them. Walsh90210 (talk) 19:38, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd argue it's about the same as the yearly world series, you have articles about it every year. This has become an annual thing as well. Oaktree b (talk) 20:24, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a poor comparison; the World Series decides the MLB champion and therefore receives commensurate coverage in newspaper articles, books, and documentaries produced well after the games are played, with some books (such as [1][2][3]) being dedicated to just one World Series. While it's WP:TOOSOON to say if particular London Series will garner the same sort of coverage, we can say for certain that it doesn't exist yet, and therefore it would be more appropriate to develop a summary of each year's series in the parent article until it becomes clear that standalone articles for each year's series are warranted. Hatman31 (he/him · talk · contribs) 20:50, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge, fails WP:NSPORTSEVENT. Hatman31 (he/him · talk · contribs) 19:47, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: How is this not notable, when we have pages of hits in RS in both US and UK media? What's already in the article is RS [4], [5], [6], [7], this [8] from French media, a year before the event. It's gotten sustained coverage. Oaktree b (talk) 20:23, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Is there sustained coverage of the 2023 series, or is the coverage this year of the 2024 London Series? Walsh90210 (talk) 20:26, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge While there is sufficient coverage and content to create separate articles for each year of the London Series, the same could probably be said of any MLB regular season series. The location of the games is the thing that is particularly notable, and that aspect can be included in MLB London Series. Since only three series have been played so far, details of each year can comfortably be merged into the parent article at present. I suppose if the series did continue for many years then the main article might become too long and detailed, so at that point we might want to remove things like line scores. --Jameboy (talk) 23:30, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge this wasn't really different from any regular season series apart from the fact the game was held internationally. Can easily be covered in the parent page. SportingFlyer T·C 06:43, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article does not meet the notability criteria. There are simply no references to him on the internet other than compendiums of baseball stats which include his name. Dennis C. Abrams (talk) 03:11, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: Found some routine coverage on newspapers.com such as [[15]] and [[16]], but nothing that is GNG worthy. However, it is quite possible that there are Mexican sources that could help this subject meet the notability guidelines. Let'srun (talk) 11:56, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The same article was deleted at Cam Guarino by User:Kuru. I tagged this article for speedy deletion but it was declined by User:GB fan. User:Namiba 02:10, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Note: The article at Cam Guarino was created by a check-user verified paid editing sock evading a block on another account. I've added 'Johnson Abigail' to an existing follow-up. Sam Kuru (talk) 11:02, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have blocked the article's author, Johnson Abigail, as a sock. GB fan - I don't mind allowing this discussion to play out, but I believe that a G5 speedy would now be within policy, and more expedient. You declined the original speedy tag - do you objections to deletion at this point? Girth Summit (blether) 14:51, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any objections. At the time I declined, there was no investigation of any kind I could point to. There wasn't even a sock puppet identified that was pointed to. ~ GB fan 15:09, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete and no objection to speedy via G5. Definitely not a notable subject. Season with WP:SALT. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:27, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

fails WP:GNG Joeykai (talk) 00:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A very easy keep. This biography clears GNG and NSPORTS by more than a lot of sports bios I've seen here. There is WP:SIGCOV in The Province, Baseball America, and Sportsnet, all of which are WP:SIRS. Dclemens1971 (talk) 01:02, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note that Sportsnet is owned by Rogers Communications, which also owns the Toronto Blue Jays, the organization that had Large at the time that article was written. Let'srun (talk) 15:02, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: The subject meets WP:GNG with WP:SIGCOV from multiple reliable sources. JTtheOG (talk) 01:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: This discussion has been included in the list of Virginia-related deletion discussions. WCQuidditch 04:27, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete I created this article as a redirect to Toronto Blue Jays minor league players, but I don't think Large is notable enough for a standalone article. The Baseball America reference is a general stat page that all minor league prospects have. In my opinion we only have 2 refs contributing towards notability in terms of SIGCOV (The Province & Sportsnet). If more SIGCOV is found I do think that the article should probably be kept. Best, GPL93 (talk) 14:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Baseball America link is an article, not a stats page. Dclemens1971 (talk) 16:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: This subject meets the WP:GNG because of independent WP:SIGCOV from Baseball America and The Province, which each provides in-depth coverage of the subject. Let'srun (talk) 15:00, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete never made the majors, coverage is sparse and routine. Non-notable minor league baseball player. SportingFlyer T·C 02:52, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Registration of players under control (Nippon Professional Baseball)[edit]

Registration of players under control (Nippon Professional Baseball) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This does not appear to be a notable topic, with most references to NPB.jp (the league website) and the Japan Professional Baseball Players Association. Lacking independent reliable sourced coverage. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:23, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Baseball and Japan. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:23, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. This is a clearly notable topic somewhat analogous to the Rule 5 draft in American baseball, and contrasting with Developmental player system (Nippon Professional Baseball). Players must be "registered" in order to play in top-league games, and it is significant news whenever new players are registered. There are sources available in English (e.g. this academic article from Marquette Sports Law Review, Through Sweat and Tears: High School Baseball and the Socialization of Japanese Boys from the University of Michigan in 2005, and numerous news articles about the decisions to register particular players), and it appears no WP:BEFORE was conducted in Japanese, where we see books like 「プロ野球・二軍の謎」(Mysteries of NPB's Minor League, Gentosha, 2017, here), 「プロ野球ビジネスのダイバーシティ戦略」(How Independent Leagues Promote Diversity in Japan, PHP, 2019, here), or 「プロ野球の経済学」(The Economics of NPB, Tōyō Keizai, 2016, here). All of these were found in just a few minutes and I'm sure there is much more available when searching for "registered player"+"NPB" or "developmental player"+"NPB". Dekimasuよ! 00:51, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not speak Japanese. You're going to have to share what these books actually say, so that we can judge if it's in-depth coverage or WP:ROUTINE mentions. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A significant amount of each book-length project listed, as implied by my translations of the book titles, plus apparently dozens more books. I'm not sure it's helpful to do a news or books WP:BEFORE search for "支配下登録" (if you did so), see hundreds or thousands of direct hits in both books and newspapers, and discard all of them due to not understanding Japanese. I'm not sure what you want me to describe about all of the sources either; they describe the contents that are described in the article, the history of the system, its implications for players participating in the system, the commemoration ceremonies for being registered, etc. Dekimasuよ! 01:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Dekimasu. Multiple books discussing the subject passes GNG. DCsansei (talk) 19:45, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletions (WP:PROD)[edit]

Do not comment on these articles here. If you agree with the proposed deletion, you don't have to do anything. If you think the article merits keeping, the remove the {{prod}} template and make an effort to improve the article so that it clearly meets the notability and verifiability criteria.
