CIJ and more: early inscriptions on Jewish contributions to theatre

[edit]

{{resolved}}

  • Reece, Steve (2022-06-16). The Formal Education of the Author of Luke-Acts. London New York Oxford New Delhi Sydney: Bloomsbury Publishing. p. 174. ISBN 978-0-567-70589-1.

For Jewish_culture#Theatre

I wish I had access to the Corpus Inscriptionum Judaeorum. Can anybody connect me to these works, or provide screenshots of the pages in question?

A second-century bce inscription from the town of Iasos in Ionia (CIJ II 749) mentions a Jew named Nicetas, son of Jason the Jerusalemite, who supported the feast of Dionysus with a contribution of 100 drachmas; a first-century bce inscription from Berenice in Cyrenaica (SEG 16.931 = CJZC 70) mentions a financial contribution by a Jew named D. Valerius Dionysius for plastering the floor and painting the walls of the amphitheater; a Roman Imperial-era inscription from the theater of Miletus (CIJ II 748) designates a specific seating area in the theater for “Jews and God-fearers” (or perhaps “Jews who are also God-fearers”).

Thanks, Temerarius (talk) 17:01, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Temerarius: I can't help with the CIJ, I'm afraid, but send me a wikimail for the pages. SerialNumber54129 18:11, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Sent @Temerarius: plaese always refer to a book or magazine with the full title, never with an abbreviation alone, this is not clear outside the discipline.
It took me quite a while to figure out that CIJ II stands for Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaicarum Vol. 2: Asie - Afrique OCLC 632456356, CJZC for Corpus jüdischer Zeugnisse aus der Cyrenaika, and SEG for Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum.
You should have access to SEG-online via The Wikipedia Library. CIJ Vol. I is on archive.org, with a free registration you can borrow it and read it online. Unfortunately Vol. II is missing there. FordPrefect42 (talk) 15:58, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I mistakenly wrote "Corpus Inscriptionum Judaeorum" instead of Corpus Inscriptionum Judaicarum. (With a J, while CI Iudaeae-Palaestiniae has an I.) I didn't know what SEG and CJZC meant, thank you. I'm not having any luck getting the SEG entry from SEG-online.
Temerarius (talk) 16:19, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Temerarius Did you receive the scans? I have mailed them twice now. Please also check your spam folder. In case anything went wrong, please contact me again. Thanks. FordPrefect42 (talk) 10:12, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks a lot, I received and responded to the second email with the pdf. Appreciate your help! Those reading at home, that's the middle one, and still seeking the first and third, the CIJ-only ones.
Temerarius (talk) 16:10, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Temerarius I have sent you all three requests, that‘s why I am asking. FordPrefect42 (talk) 17:31, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Artem.G: Do you have any other information on this (ISSN, ISBN, OCLC)? I'm not even sure if this was ever published outside of the conference, and searching online only returns the site you linked and the author's CV. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:12, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 05:11, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@IOHANNVSVERVS: The title doesn't match exactly here, but I have access to the article that matches the rest of the citation ("La répression de Thiaroye : Décrire les différents degrés de la violence coloniale"). Please add an email address to your account, then send me an email so I can reply with the article. Bsoyka (tcg) 13:56, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have access to that work via Wikipedia Library.
I'm a bit confused myself as to what exactly I'm trying to find. In Les ressacs de la mémoire collective. Étude de cas à partir de la répression de Thiaroye 44 au Sénégal by Martin Mourre, there is a footnote which says "Pour une discussion plus poussée sur le nombre de victimes, voir Mourre, «Comment restituer la violence?»" ("For further discussion of the number of victims, see Mourre, «Comment restituer la violence?»")
According to this site I found via Google [2] there is an article: Comment restituer la violence? Enjeux méthodologique et politique quant à l’écriture des événements de Thiaroye, dans: Les Temps modernes, Les guerres africaines et la France, coordonné par Etienne Smith (à paraitre)
Thank you, IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 07:45, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And if you do find anything please email to shawn.talsma@hotmail.com. Thanks again. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 09:19, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@IOHANNVSVERVS: FYI, in your above reference, à paraitre means it has not yet been published. Note Mourre's most recent five articles are all marked as such. SerialNumber54129 10:19, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me for not replying.
Thank you for pointing this out. I plan on emailing the author to see if I can get to the bottom of this. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 12:11, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should I mark this as resolved? @Serial Number 54129. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 12:12, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@IOHANNVSVERVS: Before you do, is there anything else I can look for? His book is available here (although only to read online, rather than download, unfortunately), but you've probably seen that. Otherwise, good luck with Mourre—he must be annoyed at having five publications backed up like that! SerialNumber54129 12:34, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the offer. I'll try to remember to report back to you if I get a response to my email. Going to close this as resolved for now.

For Ove Jørgensen. There should be an article relevant to him by Peter P. Rohde somewhere in there -- it should be accessible via this database, which seems to work on most Scandinavian academic/university logins, if anyone has one of those. Probably an obituary, possibly titled after him?

Other possible sources, again needing Danish institutional logins (including the Danish National Library) -- here and here.

If anyone has a university or something that has either of these editions and can can get me a digital copy of some kind I would highly appreciate it. It costs 70 euros to buy a physical copy, which is a hefty sum.

I'm looking for a detailed overview of Liechtenstein during the war itself, so around page 300 and onwards. However, that is still a lot. I will take a look and see if there is anything specific that I could use. Thanks. TheBritinator (talk) 11:00, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheBritinator I also happen to have access to this book (it looks like every library in Switzerland has a copy). I've just ordered both volumes. I'll see how much scanning "page 300 onwards" entails before giving you an ETA. Toadspike [Talk] 16:57, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For Imperial School of Medicine (Ottoman Empire)

The page states that it had at least two Turkish names and at least two official names in French, Faculté de médecine de l'Empire ottoman circa 1843 and Faculté de médecine de Constantinople circa 1853. Google Books isn't letting me see who the author is, but I see references to "Hristo" in these footnotes and suspect that it is the chapter about Hristo Tanev. I would like to confirm the exact page number and confirm that the page is the footnotes of the Hristo Tanev chapter. Mosler Bullion

[edit]
  • A History of Mosler. Mosler, Inc., Form 9983-5M-1099. 1999.

United States Bullion Depository cites this source to claim that the vault doors used the latest torch-and-drill-resistant material of the time. However, it doesn't include a date, and I'd like to verify this claim.

This is OCLC 2900302, apparently held only at the Cincinnati Public Library and the Miami University Libraries. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 23:56, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Brookfield53045: You seem to have added this citation to the article; can you help us out by providing any clarification about the source, such as any additional metadata, or any information about where/how you found/accessed it?
In particular, here are some things I'm confused by:
  • Other references I've found to something titled "History of Mosler" (e.g. OCLC 2900302, 7166046, [3], [4], [5]+[6], [7], [8], [9]) agree on the following:
    • It was published in March 1973 — not 1999
    • It was written by Robert Rosberg
    • It is 42 pages long
    • It was published as a special issue of Mosler Safe Company's bimonthly magazine Mpulse — I haven't tried too hard, but I haven't found any information about this magazine in any other context so far
    • The subtitle is "manufacturers of fire and burglar proof safes, vaults, locks, etc."
      • One reference says the title is "Mosler, Bahmann & Co."
    • This results in the following consensus citation: Rosberg, Robert (March 1973). "History of Mosler: manufacturers of fire and burglar proof safes, vaults, locks, etc". Mpulse. Mosler Safe Company.
    • Do you know if any of this information is correct?
  • I couldn't find anything related to "Form 9983-5M-1099"; where does this come from, and what does it mean?
  • FTR, I tried searching for "The most famous, if not the largest, vault door order", the first few words of the quote you added, in Google, Google Books, HathiTrust, Internet Archive, ProQuest (access through the Wikipedia Library and through my university), and Gale (likewise), and the only matches I found were a few websites and articles that appeared to be copying from Wikipedia. So most likely this is just a rare item that either hasn't been digitized or perhaps is only available in some obscure database.
Any thoughts?

1906 article in Arts and Crafts

[edit]

For Herbert Maryon

According to the below article, The March number of "Arts and Crafts" is, as usual, full of articles which are intended to provide students and art workers with useful information on a variety of subjects in which they are interested. The most important of these articles are "Various Methods of Finishing Oak," by Mr. W. Daniell; "Metal Work," by Mr. H. J. Maryon; "Practical Talks about Wood-Carving," by Mr. H. Turner; "Inlaying," by Mr. A[rthur] C[awdron] Horth; and "Bookbinding," by Mr. F. Sangorski and Mr. G. Sutcliffe. Among the more notable illustrations are reproductions of drawings by Henner, E. Detaille, and Feyen Perrin.

The starting point is to figure out what journal this is—a task not helped by its generic name. There's a good chance that this is a small journal that didn't last long. The article would be Maryon's second published work that I'm aware of, five months after "Early Irish Metal Work", in another small journal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Usernameunique (talk) 01:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the location, maybe [10]? Eddie891 Talk Work 02:18, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for that, Eddie891. I think you're right. I sent an email to a library that looks like it has a copy of the issue in question, but didn't receive a response. I've now submitted an ILL request, so hopefully that will both prove you right, and get the article. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:53, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How's this going? If you're having trouble with the ILL, I should be able to request an ILL for OCLC 225804755 pretty easily, as my university is within the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and so is one of the libraries that has it. If you received it but it's not the right magazine, if you send me the full newspaper article that prompted your search, I can try to figure out what else it might be. Solomon Ucko (talk) 06:24, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Sollyucko. Would you mind giving it a go? My library claims that the ILL was unsuccessful; I could try submitting it again, but perhaps you would have better luck if a copy is already within your system. --Usernameunique (talk) 20:19, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it looks like University of Minnesota, Twin Cities doesn't have that issue, but it looks like the following libraries have it:
Two of these are academic libraries in the US, so I think there's a decent chance of success. My university's ILL department is a bit busy currently, but I'll submit it in a few days and see what happens. If you contact me via Special:EmailUser, I'll send you the scan I receive, if it's successful.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 21:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've submitted an ILL request myself. It might be more complicated than I originally thought, but hopefully they can figure it out without too much difficulty... I'm just confused how issue and volume numbers correspond with months and years... Solomon Ucko (talk) 13:58, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comparing earlier mentions of Arts and Crafts in The Globe with https://archive.org/details/artscrafts01londuoft confirms that the publisher is Hutchinson & Co. The listing in the catalog of the National Library of Scotland indicates that this is v. 4, no. 22.
My request "has been cancelled by ILL staff for the following reason: Unable to find supplier / The only library that owns this particular year has it as an electronic subscription and they do not have the license to lend it."
I've replied to ask if they can at least provide metadata, as well as sending them a list of libraries that seem to have it in print, narrowed down to Queen's, NLS, and Cambridge, which say they have vol. 4.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 16:10, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernameunique: Is this still needed? A few of my friends are attending Queen’s in the fall, and I could ask them to see if they can get it. Barring that, I can try an ILL, but again, that’ll have to wait until fall. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:13, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can request this from Queen's. ILL here is usually pretty quick and the librarians are wizards, so I've got some hope. -- asilvering (talk) 13:48, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

December 1964 Chicago Tribune article

[edit]

{{resolved}}

  • "Henning Gets International Swim Post". Chicago Tribune: 155. December 17, 1964.

Trying to sort out the copyright status of File:HenningHaroldDr.Swimmer.png to determine whether it can be used in Hal Henning. The file's uploader states the photo comes from the article "Henning Gets International Swim Post" that appeared on page 155 of the December 17, 1964, issue of the Chicago Tribune, but there was no attribution. Since the Tribune copyrighted all of its 1964 issues, an original photo taken by a Tribune staff photographer would most likely be under copyright protection until 2060. A search of "Henning Gets International Swim Post" for December 1964 on newspapers.com, however, gets 35 matches, and this might mean the story was a wire story picked up multiple papers, one of which might attribute the photo. I don't have a newspapers.com account, but perhaps someone who does can take a look to see whether any of those 35 matches (minus the Tribune) actually show the same photo and attribute it in some way, or whether the article itself has a by-line.

Thanks, -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW if you search with quotation marks around the phrase (exact match search), you only get 3 results, with all 3 being Chicago Tribune. I checked a couple results from your query and a couple results from "Dr Henning"/"Harold W. Henning"/a quote from the Chicago Tribune article + Dec 1964 and I don't see that photo anywhere else. The Edge of Time: the authoritative biography of Kalpana Chawla

[edit]

For Kalpana Chawla

A bit of a tough one. I'm looking for two specific pieces of information. Don't know where exactly in the book they are. Specifically, I am looking for information on (a) Chawla's birthdate: specifically, was it altered from March 17 to July 1 to "enroll her in school at a younger than normal age" (as is mentioned on the article's talk page)? and (b) the specifics of Chawla's pilot license: specifically, I would like to verify the claim "Chawla held an FAA Flight Instructor certificate with airplane and glider ratings, and a commercial pilot license with single and multi-engine airplane, seaplane, and glider ratings."

Thanks, Spookyaki (talk) 04:52, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested a physical copy through interlibrary loan—I love a good challenge. Bsoyka (tcg) 16:34, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Spookyaki, regarding your point (a), the birthdate-related detail is covered in the following source:
Salwi, Dilip M (20 February 2004). "Did you know Kalpana was called Monto?". Rediff.com. Archived from the original on August 20, 2017.

She passed her 10th class from the Haryana Board Examination in 1976. Actually, she was underage and got away by changing her date of birth from March 17, 1962 to July 1, 1961.

NitinMlk (talk) 22:40, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the help! Unfortunately, this does not strike mas as being a particularly reliable source, particularly when compared against academic sources that give her birth date as July 1, 1961. I would still prefer Harrison's account if possible. Spookyaki (talk) 22:52, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Spookyaki, if that's the case, then Harrison himself noted this detail,[1] and scholarly sources do mention this date of birth.[2] - NitinMlk (talk) 05:48, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I think the Springer source is enough for me. Thanks! That's super helpful. Still wouldn't mind getting the details directly from Harrison's biography if I can, so won't close this request quite yet, but still, this is very helpful. Spookyaki (talk) 05:59, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kalpana Chawla (Fig. 1.17) was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, Punjab, about 120 kilometers northwest of Delhi, in the State of Haryana, North India, to an archetypal family with strong drive. ... Most biographies report that she was born on July 1, 1961 but, as the authoritative biography by her husband Jean-Pierre Harrison reveals, that date entered her official records because it was used to enroll her in school a year in advance.

@Spookyaki: Quotes pulled from the Harrison bio:
  • Kalpana Chawla was born in the small provincial city of Karnal, Punjab (now Haryana), India, on 17 March 1962. Her birthdate was subsequently stated as 1 June 1961 to enable her to enroll early in school at her insistence.
    — Harrison, p. 1

  • After a few flying lessons, I suggested to Kalpana that she take instruction from another instructor because I did not think I could teach her as required. She was upset with my suggestion but nevertheless quickly earned her Private Pilot License for singe-engine land airplanes. Soon afterward she began taking glider lessons for the add-on rating at Boulder Municipal Airport.
    — p. 46

  • Kalpana added to her pilot qualifications, eventually earning a Commercial Pilot License for single and multi-engine airplanes and seaplanes and for gliders. [...] Kalpana eventually acquired Certificated Flight Instructor qualifications for single-engine airplanes and instrument-airplane.
