I read a Historical Society discussion saying Violet was the mother but I can't find confirmation one way or the other so I am leaving it ambiguous.. OrganicEarth (talk) 21:05, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds wise. Again, I'm sorry for jumping the gun. (Under the unfortunate circumstances of the day, it seems quite obvious that the mother would be easier to determine than the father.) Your first edits appear to be very helpful and the last thing I wish to do is discourage your participation in Wikipedia. Continue to edit boldly! Adding images to Wikipedia

[edit]

I noted you seem to be adding a great deal of images to Wikipedia articles. Please note, Wikipedia is not an image repository. Images should not overwhelm the article (extending way below the article its self[1][2]) and a galleries should not consist of an indiscriminate collection of images. Extra images should be put at the Wikimedia Commons. See also WP:IMAGE and WP:IG. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 16:27, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I try to be judicious but I am a bit of an inclusionist. If you look on Commons you will see LOTS of photos of the falls. I tried to be selective. You'll notice that one shot is aerial and shows the area, another shows cabins in the area named for Goodrich Falls, another shows the falls before a bridge over them and another shows the falls with the covered bridge above. It's a new article so hopefully it will be expanded. OrganicEarth (talk) 16:51, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To be a bit of an inclusionist is fine but there is a Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout as well as consensus guidelines and policy on Wikipedia delineating what is considered encyclopedic. I have cleaned up World's Columbian Exposition based on them (spelled out in the links above). Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 19:39, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am really sorry about demolishing the Kota Raja article and redefining it. I guess I was thinking of the wrong place.Rhumidian (talk) 20:06, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, no problem! I had actually noticed there was a place with the same name in the area of Bali / Lombook, so the subject needed disambiguation. I had meant to come back and sort it all out.
I'm still not really sure if the article I'm working on should be merged into Banda Aceh.. but it was weird that I kept finding photos with the name of a place that I can't even find mentioned in that article that was clearly a prominent place. The history is a little complicated with a Sultanate surrounded by British rule, then Dutch rule, and then independence..
I see there are articles for New Amsterdam and Constantinople. Certainly it wasn't that major a city or capitol, but hopefully I can evolve it to where it's a worthwhile stand alone or section in the parent article. Thanks for your very nice note! No apology is needed and I appreciate your good works. OrganicEarth (talk) 20:12, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Balinese theater

[edit]

Hello OrganicEarth,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Balinese theater for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your recent contributions! I came to ask if you could possibly revisit some of them, to make them even more valuable with more precise links. For example, at Henricus Marinus Neeb, you apparently added an ambiguous link to kampong within picture caption

Portrait of Gotfried Coenraad Ernst van Daalen and Dutch troops at a fortified kampong with dead indigenous people

I expect it is easy for you to verify that kampung (an Indonesian and Malaysian word for a hamlet or village), given on the Kampong disambiguation page, is the specific meaning of kampong you meant, though I am not completely sure so I hesitate to make the change myself.

You could see the remaining unfixed ambiguous links you have recently created in this report about editors, where you have the "honor" of appearing second or third (with 20 items, possibly lower after some fixes done by me): you have created more ambiguous links than almost anyone else recently. :) And there is a convenient "FIX" link next to each of those, which allows you to use a "DabSolver" tool to easily select which more precise term is what you meant, easily done if you know yourself and if the corresponding disambiguation page contains the option. (Sometimes/often the disambiguation page does not, and then "fixing" involves either de-linking or adding the missing item to the dab page. For example, I recently added Richard Powell (actor born 1896) redlink to Richard Powell disambiguation page, to fix a dablink created by a different editor.) Could you possibly please take a look at this and see if you could fix at least some of these? Either way, keep up the good work! cheers, --doncram 18:55, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doncram. Thank you for your message and suggestions. Surprisingly there is not an article on kampong/ kampung. The disambiguation page gives the general usage definition. Kampung redirects to a section of an article on villages. I'm not sure in this case that it is actually more useful. And article noting the general usage but specifying the village architecture and traditions associated would be more useful but is a substantial undertaking. I fear if I launched it I would be criticized. I am most familiar with the kampongs of Sumatra, but even there the variety is somewhat substantial as I am not prepared to invest the time needed to do it properly. It's an interesting subject but more complicated than I am prepared to tackle, at least for the moment.
In some of the other cases the issue is complicated because what a place name referred to in the 19th century is not the same as what the name refers to today, or at least it's not clear which municipal designation is equivalent.. If XYZ was a locality and is now part of a regency, a district and a city a;; of the same name, which do I target the link to? In some cases I actually think the disambiguation page is the most useful link.
I will try to limit my links to dablinks and target them as best I can. Thanks for the handy tool. I checked it out (unfortunately for the link from in the Palace Theater arcticle I wasn't sure which actor was the intended target so I couldn't fix) but I will see what I can do on some others. 19:51, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Another example is Kediri which you targeted to Kediri, Java. That seems reasonable to me but I am not sure if the Kediri residency is more appropriately targeted to the Kediri Regency. On the other hand I don't know if that's accurate either so I guess I was okay with some ambiguity. The place names are related so there is overlap.. As far as I'm concerned tageting either way or to the disambiguation page (where the reader can decide for themselves) are all reasonable outcomes. But I suppose the consensus is that no links can be to disambiguation pages? I don't know. If I can't make a link more useful by targeting it to particulare page I can leave it unlinked but I don't know what else to do.. OrganicEarth (talk) 20:12, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for your thoughtful response. I appreciate that you've considered disambiguating in some of these cases...I guess I thought it would be easy for you to make choices in these areas but that's not the case. (In some other areas it can be very easy to select which person out of several having the same name is the one intended, e.g. the rugby player vs. the politician, or the 1962 film vs. the 2005 film of the same name.) About Kampong and Kampung, i see that the former is a dab page. And the latter is a redirect to a section in an article, which can be fine....it is not necessary to create a separate article on a topic if the treatment in one section of an article is okay. To fix up the treatment of the topics would involve editing at several articles I gather, and it can be messy arranging for mergers or splits or whatever. So I agree there are complex considerations in general about where one's Wikipedia editing efforts are best directed. Don't take me as criticising you; if there does not seem to be easy contributions to make in this way, then don't worry about it.
Your comment about my having made a disambiguation choice for the Kediri term at some article or another, brings up a new idea though: maybe you as an article author want to make the disambiguation choices, rather than leave them open to someone else less informed. The disambiguating done by others like me has effect on the articles you create or develop, because the disambiguating changes the meaning that readers understand. So, for example, perhaps it would be better for you to link to BOTH Kediri, Java and Kediri Regency in your article directly, rather than linking to the dab page, so you control the experience for readers. Because there are a lot of editors working now within wp:DPL's "Monthly challenge" process and otherwise to do the disambiguating wikipedia-wide. I would not say that linking to disambiguation pages is disallowed, because it is not, but the disambiguating crowd is acting like it is, with some exceptions: explicit links to disambiguation pages in See also sections, for example, are fine, e.g. "See also: Kampong (disambiguation)". In that construction the reader is informed that they'll go to a dab page if they click on it. Anyhow when I and others are disambiguating, we make our best guess whether to:
  • change the link to point to one of the possibilities on a dab page
  • or to de-link,
  • or to make the link explicit (i.e. change "kampong" to "Kampong (disambiguation)",
  • or to ourselves add another option to the disambiguation page (which takes some work),
  • or to propose that the disambiguation page itself be converted to a regular article, per wp:DABCONCEPT, by tagging with {{dabprimary}}
  • or to go ahead ourselves and do such a conversion, done well or poorly. (For example, I just did such a conversion for the page cantor, because I saw the multiple options given as related and deserving of an overall treatment. And I checked all the incoming links that were to the dab page, to make sure they made sense going to the revised article, which they did.)
I think that is all of the possibilities.
Anyhow I think it's just good for you to know a bit about what is going on, to be informed in continuing to do what you do. Keep up the good work! Thanks, --doncram 21:31, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you doncram. This information is useful and will help me do a better job of diambiguating going forward. OrganicEarth (talk) 15:01, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Henk Schulte Nordholt (art historian) for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Henk Schulte Nordholt (art historian) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Henk Schulte Nordholt (art historian) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 01:23, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that the nominator has withdrawn the nomination, and I've suggested a speedy keep. It would be a good idea if you could find another source or two to anchor the subject's notability. Otherwise someone else may put this up again, or pursue deletion through the current procedure. ∂BusterD (talk) 02:23, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Donald Trump

[edit]

Just as a heads up, the information you've added twice to the lead of Donald Trump is covered further down in the lead, where it says he is running for president. When other editors are quoting WP:RECENTISM, they don't mean this information shouldn't be in the lead. It just shouldn't be placed in the very first sentence, as including that in addition to the entire paragraph covering this already in the lead provides undue weight to recent events. You also removed the descriptor "politician" from the lead, which has consensus to be included at the talk page. While I certainly encourage you to be WP:BOLD, please also follow the bold, revert, discuss cycle and bring up issues on the talk page after they've been reverted once. Arguing in edit summaries can be perceived as edit warring. Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions about anything. I'm watching this talk page, so you can respond here and won't need to ping me. ~ RobTalk 05:27, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rob. As per the talk page discussion, what makes him a politician is that he is running for president. It's best to be accurate and to the point. OrganicEarth (talk) 14:15, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There has been no discussion on the talk page about adding that to the lead, and editors have expressed opposition to it by reverting. Please do not continue to revert without obtaining consensus first. ~ RobTalk 14:18, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hannah Maynard

[edit]

Hello, Organic Earth. Thank you for adding the maiden name of Hannah Maynard. I am just wondering what is your source for the spelling "Heatherly", as all the sources I've seen, including the BC Archives and Canadian Encyclopedia, spell it "Hatherly". Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that you created the page Richard Maynard (photographer). I am planning to write a series of articles on early British Columbian photographers. Hannah Maynard was my first effort. I'm hoping to work on the article Richard Maynard in about a month's time after I receive an important source by David Mattison in the mail. Regards, Curiocurio (talk) 11:55, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Curiocurio. The Hannah Maynard article is well done and I was happy to find it. You seem to be correct on the spelling of her maiden/ middle name.. I have changed it in the article and on Wikipedia Commons. As it is a maiden name and not a middle name (is that correct?) if your preference is to include it in a different way that's fine also. I look forward to seeing articles on other Canadian photographers as well! :) Have a great weekend. OrganicEarth (talk) 13:17, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the changes Organic Earth! I'm pretty sure Hatherly is her maiden name rather than her middle name, but maybe her middle name will show up sometime in my researches. User:Curiocurio (talk) 00:50, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ouse and Deli

[edit]

Hi OrganicEarth, thank you for thanking me for fixing a link from ambiguous Breteuil to specific Breteuil, Oise (not far north of Paris). I put some effort into figuring out the difference vs. Breteuil, Eure (not far to the west of Paris), and fixed a number of ambiguous links, not at all relating that to you.

I hope you don't mind: I come back to your ambiguous links because now you're at top of the list of editors who recently added ambiguous links, and I wonder if you could go along with one change of practice that could change some of them. Specifically your usage of "Deli" twice at Charles J. Kleingrothe article puzzled me, i wondered if you meant delicatessen or had a typo for Delhi or what. Nothing on the Deli dab page looks good. But when I google I find there is a tobacco company, and it even has a historical timeline and more about Deli, at "www.fundinguniverse.com", and it is certainly Wikipedia-notable. So thanks, actually, for calling attention to the fact by creating the link, much like a redlink, and "Redlinks help the encyclopedia grow."

But, a suggestion: "Deli" is too common a name for the tobacco company article to get as its title, and it should be at something like Deli (tobacco) or Deli, Inc. or Deli (Malaysia). After trying a little to find any Wikipedia article about it, which you no doubt did, I would pick a plausible name and use that, i.e. put in it in as [[Deli (tobacco company)]] say. Someone else might come along later and create its article at Deli, Inc. and not be aware of your usage. What would be better is to convey to others that there is some usage of [[Deli (tobacco company)]]<nowiki/>, by putting it in the disambiguation page. Redlinks can and should be added to disambiguation pages, maybe you don't know that. They just need to have a supporting bluelink which uses the term in context. What would be technically correct would be for you to add a line like: <nowiki>[[Deli (tobacco company)]], for which one consumer was [[Charles J. Kleingrothe]]
That seems odd because Kleingrothe's association with Deli is obscure, but it meets the rules for redlinks on dab pages (which are at MOS:DABRL). And then when someone creates "Deli, Inc" article they will know to look for articles that link to Deli (tobacco company) (you can see any others by clicking on the redlink to open an edit window, and then hitting "what links here". They might go to those articles and modify them. At a minimum they will create a redirect from your redlink to the new company article. I don't know what you know or not, and hope this is helpful. To be didactic, could you do something like that for your Deli usage, so it goes off of disambiguators' lists? If not, no problem, you have to make choices and someone else will get around to adding some version of "Deli" to the disambiguation page eventually. But I hope it is useful to know how to do it. Please don't simply unlink your usage just to get out of view; it is certainly better for everyone to have all of your links to dab pages than not. :) Keep up the good work again, cheers, --doncram 17:28, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doncram. Why didn't you leave the link as Breteuil, Oise as opposed to targeting it just as Breteuil and hiding Oise? Thanks for sorting that bit out.
As far as Deli, yes, the company is the ideal target. I couldn't tell whether it was notable or not. It seems to have been named for the region? And on the disambig page I believe here is a link to the Sultanate (which I believe probably existed before the Dutch East Indies and perhaps during) and then there is the Deli Regency, which likely came into being after. Redirecting a company to an area seems problematic, but I guess I thought there was some utility in pointing to these areas.. Not ideal certainly. If you think the tobacco company is notable I am happy with that solution. My impression is that editors here tend not to like articles on defunct companies, but I think it's an unfortunate bias. Thanks for all your help!
Dutch WIkipedia has an article on the company here and it does seem to be quite notable based on the Google Books sources I looked into.. OrganicEarth (talk) 06:03, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What are you working on? Anything interesting? Apropos of nothing I am troubled that I can't access the primary source for Carter W. Clarke's quote on the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan. It's such a provocative quote and it seems to be fairly widely reported in what appear to me to be fairly reliable sources, but I would be much happier if I could read the actual interview and see what was actually said in context. I feat that the quote may not be entirely accurate or that the context may put it in a different light, but maybe I'm just paranoid. I like things to be correct and don't want to contribute to a meme that may be at least partially false. I posted a link on the article talk page and I suppose it should be possible to get the library to help establish the veracity of the quote and put forth the interview or at least broader context to that comment.. An yway.. Have a great weekend. OrganicEarth (talk) 05:39, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Bunuraja

[edit]

Hello OrganicEarth,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Bunuraja for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

Adding of photos

[edit]

Hi OrganicEarth, I've noticed that you've been adding a lot of photos in some of the articles, and user Fountains of Bryn Mawr have raised the same issue with you before. Some of these articles are rather short and adding too much photos overwhelms it, while some articles are already filled with photos in every sub-topics. Photos that belonged to certain ethnic groups have been categorized in Wikimedia Common, and there are links to those photo galleries given at the bottom of article itself for readers who are interested to see more of them. I agree that "a critical and distinguishing cultural aspect of these people" "Needs more coverage" but I also feel that "essential pictures critical to a full understanding of the culture and practices" alone is not enough without accompanying explanation, content and references/citations. However, it would be helpful if you can expand those articles with citation and then include photos related to the sub-topic under its sub-topic title.

Besides that, I've also noticed that you've been creating several articles that are not to the standards of Wikipedia articles. Please use the Wikipedia:Articles for creation to help you to have your articles check for approval.Jeblat (talk) 11:31, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Improvement of Batavia-related article

[edit]

Thanks for all the improvements in the Batavia-related article. I have to watch some edit though: it's best not to replace the first picture of List of colonial buildings and structures in Jakarta as it is one of the few pic that shows the original city of Jayakarta before its complete eradication into Batavia. Thus, I have reverted that particular edit. I really appreciate how you decided to create article for each of the buildings in the List of colonial buildings and structures in Jakarta article. Try not to leave red links though, so create the article as soon as possible!

Also, in my opinion, I prefer to merge the article Batavia, Dutch East Indies into History of Jakarta; although I'm not very sure as of now, but let's see how the other Wiki users think about it (I am about 60% prefer to merge it back with History of Jakarta and have you improve that article instead of copy pasting all into a new article.--Rochelimit (talk) 17:39, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, OrganicEarth! I've seen you create a lot of quality new articles lately, so thanks for that. This specifically pertains to your new article Franssen van de Putten. It's a fantastic article, but an article for van de Putte already exists at Isaäc Dignus Fransen van de Putte. It would be fantastic if you could merge your new article into the existent article. Hmmmm.. That is problematic. I assumed some sort of formatting issue needed redirecting to the page and that's why there was a redlink.. but I see there actually isn't one.. And yet several pages have links to it: links to it. I have redirected to the page Pakubuwono, but I don't see any note on a Pakubuwono I so I'm not sure what that means.. Hello Mr. OrganicEarth, Excuse me, but i need to know something about you.

Are you an indonesia citizen? or do you live in Jakarta?

Sorry if i am little bit curious But you know that my edit about Jakarta is true, I am dissapointed about your revision.

Jakarta is headed by a governor (like other provinces) and not a mayor

Jakarta consists of five cities (Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, West Jakarta and South Jakarta) and a regency (Kepulauan Seribu)

No one doubt about these facts. though Indonesians call it as a city, that is a false information and a misconception about what Jakarta really is, I need to fix this ambiguity, so i will not let people misled.

I need your understanding.

Architecture of Bogor

[edit]

Hi, OrganicEarth; I see you are actively working on Architecture of Bogor. You may have plans to enhance the notability. However, at present, the single reference does not meet the necessary threshold for article notability requirements. Accordingly, there is a question as to the article's notability. Unless adequate referencing is available, the present content would seem to be better placed in a Wikimedia Commons Gallery or Wikimedia Commons category. Do you have and do you plan to add references that meet the notability threshold, which is available for review at WP:N ? Thanks. FeatherPluma (talk) 21:38, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

[edit]

Recently you changed Oregon Lumber Company and Interwiki linked Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I wanted to let you know I have change that Interwiki link. I just thought I would share why, so that in the future you could avoid some of the very common mistake I see all the time, when it comes the name of the LDS Church.

Per WP:The and Talk:The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the name of the LDS Church in Utah, for all articles after the 1844 "Succession Crisis", is spelled and Interwiki link as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". Please notice that the word The is included and capitalized.--- ARTEST4ECHO(Talk) 18:39, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of new articles with few categorization, no talk page, spelling issues, and lack of proper referencing

[edit]

Hi OrganicEarth, while I appreciate many of your additions in Indonesian-related articles, most of them look like a stub, with no well-established element for a new article (no talk page, no categorization, no coordinates, no infobox, spelling issues, poor reference, etc.). Make your time to create a good quality article rather than small stubs, risking them into deletion. So be careful about these. Also be mindful that Wikipedia is not a gallery, you can instead put a commons category button to link to all related photos.--Rochelimit (talk) 18:43, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
